THE AFTERMATH

Lyra’s POV 6:03 AM. Blood dried on my marble. Blackwood wolves gone. Police gone. NDAs signed. My penthouse looked like a crime scene wrapped in luxury. Aria and Ash were asleep in my bed. Both of them. Kade was on the floor beside it, back against the mattress, head tipped back, eyes closed. Not sleeping. Guarding. He was covered in blood. Not his. I stood in the doorway with two cups of coffee. One black. One with three sugars and cream. I knew how he took it. I hated that I remembered. I set his cup on the floor. The clink made his eyes snap open. Gold, then gray. Human again. “Report,” I said. No ‘good morning.’ No ‘thank you for not dying.’ He sat up. Took the cup. Didn’t drink. “Selene’s in a coma,” he said, voice gravel. “Three broken ribs. Fractured skull. Lacerated kidney. She’ll live.” “Unfortunate.” I sipped my coffee. “Blackwood Pack?” “Disavowed her. Officially. Called me at 4 AM. Called you their ‘True Luna.’ They’re terrified.” “Good.” I walked to the windows. Sunrise over Manhattan. The glass was spiderwebbed where Kade had slammed Selene. I’d have to replace it. Again. “And the media?” His jaw ticked. “It’s everywhere. ‘Billionaire Luna Defends Penthouse.’ ‘Volkov Alpha Goes Feral For Secret Family.’ Video hit 9 million views in three hours.” I pulled up my phone. The headline on PackNet: SILVER LUNA CONFIRMED: L.V. KING IS LYRA VALEN. Kade Volkov Kneels. Under it, a still frame. Me, barefoot, white silk bloody, holding a silver blade. Kade behind me, on his knees, gold eyes on me. Aria and Ash peeking from behind my legs. We looked like a war painting. “The Elders summoned us,” Kade said quietly. “High Circle. Tonight. 8 PM.” I closed my eyes. The High Circle. Five Ancient Alphas. They judged mating disputes. Pack wars. Executions. The last Silver Luna they summoned never left. “Are you afraid?” Kade asked. I looked at him. At the blood on his Henley. At my children sleeping behind him. “No,” I said. “Are you?” He stood. Every movement careful. Like I’d spook. “I’m afraid of you,” he said. “But not for me.” He stepped closer. Stopped a foot away. Obeying Rule #2. “Lyra... last night. In the kids’ room. You let me—” “Don’t.” My voice cut. “Last night was survival. Not forgiveness.” He flinched. Nodded. “Ash has nightmares now,” I said, looking at the bed. “Aria asked me if Daddy’s going to die like the bad lady. That’s on you. On Selene. On me for letting you in.” “I’ll fix it.” “You can’t fix four years.” I turned away. “Go home, Kade. Shower. Burn those clothes. Be back at 7 for the Circle. And Kade?” He paused at the door. “If you kneel to them tonight,” I said, not looking at him, “and not to me... we’re done. Contract or not.” The door shut. I sank to the floor. Finally. Aria rolled over in her sleep. Whispered, “Mommy?” “I’m here, baby.” “Is Daddy coming back?” I stared at the blood on my carpet. “Yes,” I said. “He’s coming back.” --- Kade’s POV - 7:52 PM* The High Circle smelled like old stone and older wolves. Five thrones. Five Ancient Alphas. Marius in the center. He’d been Alpha when my grandfather was a pup. Lyra walked beside me. Black dress. Hair up. No jewelry except her ring. The one I never gave her. The one that said King. We stopped in the center. On the stone. The same stone where she bled five years ago. Marius didn’t stand. “Lyra Valen. Kade Volkov. You’re summoned for three crimes.” Lyra said nothing. “One,” Marius intoned. “Unsanctioned claiming. You bore his pups without pack approval.” I stepped forward. “I rejected her. The crime is” “Silence.” Marius didn’t raise his voice. Didn’t need to. “Two. Attempted murder of Selene Blackwood, Alpha-kin.” Lyra’s laugh was soft. Lethal. “She brought silver into my home. For my children. Pack Law 3, Article 7. Defense of pups is absolute. Or did you forget the Laws, Elder?” Murmurs. Marius’s eyes narrowed. “Three. You’re Silver Luna. Unmated. Unclaimed. Unstable. A threat to all packs.” The word unmated hit like a slap. Lyra tilted her head. “Am I?” She turned. To me. In front of the High Circle. In front of every Alpha watching. “Kade Volkov,” she said. Clear. Cold. “Kneel.” Rule #6. He obeys me. I hit my knees. Gasps. Her hand came to my head. Not gentle. Claiming. “Mine,” she said to the Circle. “My Alpha. My weapon. My choice.” Marius stood. Finally. “You dare” “I dare,” Lyra said. “Because I’m not your weapon anymore. I’m not your Luna. I’m not your cautionary tale.” She looked down at me. Gold bled into her eyes. Silver Luna power. “Say it,” she whispered. Only for me. I knew the words. The old words. The ones that bound Alphas to Lunas for life. “Luna, my fang,” I said. Loud. So the stone heard. “Luna, my blood. Luna, my breath. I submit.” The bond roared. Not the broken thing from five years ago. New. Whole. Branded. Lyra’s eyes went white. Power exploded from her. Knocked two Alphas off their thrones. Cracked the stone under my knees. When it cleared, she was breathing hard. But standing. Marius was on the floor. Lyra stepped over him. Looked at the other four. “The High Circle is adjourned,” she said. “You want to summon me again? Bring silver.” She walked out. Didn’t look back. I rose. Followed. Because that’s what weapons do. --- Lyra’s POV - 10:43 PM Kade found me on the roof. City lights below. Wind in my hair. “You submitted,” I said without turning. “In front of them. On record.” “I did.” “Why?” He came to stand beside me. Not touching. “Because Aria asked if I was going to die,” he said. “And I realized I already did. Five years ago. When I let you go.” He turned to me. “I’m not asking for forgiveness, Lyra. I’m asking for permission. To earn it. Every day. For the rest of my life.” I looked at him. Really looked. Blood. Bruises. Gold eyes that were only for me now. “Rule #10,” I said. He went still. “There is no Rule #10.” “There is now.” I faced him. “You die before my children. You bleed before them. You break before them. Swear it.” He dropped to one knee. Again. But this time, it wasn’t the Circle. It wasn’t for show. It was for me. “I swear it, Luna,” he said. “On my wolf. On my life. On them.” I believed him. God help me, I believed him. I pulled him up. We didn’t kiss. We didn’t touch. We just stood there. Two weapons. Pointed at the world. Together.
