FIVE YEARS LATER

1460 Words
Kade Volkov hadn’t slept in three days. His wolf clawed under his skin, rabid and relentless. The beast had been tearing at him for five years, five months, and thirteen days. Kade counted. Every hour since he spoke those two words in the mating circle. I do not. The rejection had been political. Necessary. Elder Marius said a Volkov Alpha couldn’t take an omega as Luna. The pack needed the Blackwood alliance. Selene’s father controlled the northern territories. Elder Marius was a liar. Now Selene’s father was dead. The Blackwood alliance was dust. And Kade’s company was bleeding out from a hostile takeover by Redfang Enterprises. Thirty billion in market cap gone in six months. All because he rejected his fated mate. His wolf knew it. The beast had known from the second Lyra Valen’s eyes flashed silver. That wasn’t omega. That was Luna. His Luna. And he’d thrown her away. Unworthy, he’d called her. The Moon Goddess was making him pay. “Sir.” Rhett Kane, his Beta, slammed a folder on the mahogany desk. “Redfang’s offer. They’ll buy us for cents. We have 48 hours before the board forces the sale.” Kade didn’t look up. He stared at his hands. They shook. They hadn’t stopped shaking since the rejection night. Phantom blood from Lyra’s palms still stained them. He could smell it. Could smell her. Pine and snow and moonflowers. And underneath, something new he’d only caught for one second before she walked out. Lightning. Ozone. Power. “Unless,” Rhett continued, voice tight, “we acquire King Tech.” That got Kade’s attention. His head snapped up. “What?” “L.V. King. New York tech firm. Came out of nowhere two years ago. CEO is a ghost. No photos. No interviews. But they own the patent that can save Volkov Industries.” Rhett slid a tablet across the desk. “If we merge, we survive. If we don’t, we’re done.” Kade scanned the numbers. Clean. Brutal. L.V. King had built a 4 billion dollar empire in 24 months. Faster than Kade built his in ten years. “Set a meeting,” Kade growled. His wolf stirred, suddenly alert. Why? “I want to meet this L.V. King today.” “He doesn’t meet anyone. Ever. Only communicates through” “Tell him I’m buying his company or I’m burning it to the ground. He’ll meet.” Rhett’s eyebrows rose. “You’re desperate.” “I’m feral.” Kade’s eyes flashed Alpha gold. “There’s a difference.” Rhett studied him. Then nodded once. “I’ll make the call. But Kade… you look like hell. When was the last time you ate? Slept?” “When was the last time my wolf let me?” The intercom buzzed. His assistant’s voice was shaky. “Mr. Volkov? L.V. King agreed to meet. One hour. Your office. Condition is… you meet alone. No Beta. No lawyers.” Kade’s pulse slammed. His wolf went still. Too still. Predatory. “Fine,” he said. Rhett frowned. “That’s not” “Out.” The Beta left. Kade stood and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Manhattan sprawled below him. His kingdom. Crumbling. He pressed his forehead to the glass. The cold helped. Nothing else did. Where are you, little omega? His wolf whispered. _Did you die out there? Did I kill you? The elevator dinged. Kade didn’t turn. “You’re early.” Click. Click. Click. Heels on marble. Expensive. Deliberate. The scent hit him first. Not perfume. Not coffee from the lobby. Lightning. Ozone. Moonflowers crushed under bare feet. And something else now. Something warm. Vanilla. Milk. Children? His wolf _roared_ inside him. Mate. Mine. Alive. Kade spun around. And forgot how to breathe. She stood in his doorway. Not the broken girl in a thrift store dress. Not the omega who bled on stones. This woman wore a black designer suit that cost more than most cars. Her hair fell in dark waves past her shoulders. Her skin was glow, not starvation pale. Her chin was high. Her eyes… Her eyes were still silver. Molten. Luna. Lyra Valen. Alive. Here. Real. Kade’s knees nearly buckled. Five years of grief, rage, and madness crashed into him at once. His wolf threw itself against his ribs, howling MINE MINE MINE so loud he almost shifted in his office. She didn’t flinch. Didn’t speak. She just looked at him. And Kade saw it. She wasn’t his omega anymore. She was his equal. “L.V. King, I presume,” Kade said. His voice was gravel. Ruined. Lyra’s lips curved. Not a smile. A weapon. “Kade.” One word. His name. From her mouth. After five years. His entire body reacted. Blood rushed south. His fangs ached to descend. His wolf wanted to vault the desk, pin her to the wall, and scent every inch of her to make sure she was real. He stayed frozen. Because her scent was different now. Layered. Hers. And… others. Pups. The realization hit like a truck. His wolf went berserk. “You,” Kade breathed. “You’re…” “Your new partner,” Lyra finished smoothly. She walked into his office, every step controlled. “Or your executioner. Depends on how this meeting goes.” She set a leather folder on his desk. Her hands were smooth now. No scars. No blood. A massive diamond ring glittered on her left hand. _Married?_ His wolf nearly shredded him from the inside. SHE’S MATED? “King Tech doesn’t merge,” Lyra said. Her voice was silk over steel. “We acquire. Volkov Industries is worth 12 cents on the dollar. I’m here to buy you.” Kade couldn’t process words. He could only stare. At her throat. No mating mark. At her finger. That ring wasn’t a mate band. It was armor. At her stomach. Flat under the suit. But five years ago… Could she have…? “No,” Kade said. The word tore out of him. “No?” Lyra tilted her head. Silver eyes cold. Assessing. “You’d rather go bankrupt? Lose your pack? Funny. You were willing to sacrifice me for your pack five years ago. Now I’m asking you to sacrifice your ego for it.” She knew. She knew everything. “Why are you here?” Kade demanded. He rounded the desk before he could stop himself. Too close. Her scent drowned him. He was shaking again. “After five years. Why now?” Lyra didn’t step back. She looked up at him. And for one second, the CEO mask cracked. Pain. Raw and endless. The same pain from the mating circle. Then it was gone. Replaced with ice. “Because you tried to buy my company, Alpha,” she said softly. “And I don’t like being bought.” She turned to leave. Kade’s hand shot out. He grabbed her wrist. Skin to skin. The mate bond, starved for five years, _exploded_. Heat. Lightning. Agony. Ecstasy. His wolf slammed into his mind, _CLAIM HER CLAIM HER CLAIM HER_. Lyra gasped. Her silver eyes went wide. For one heartbeat, she was 18 again. Bleeding. Broken. His. Then she ripped her arm away like he burned her. “Don’t touch me,” she whispered. “Ever.” Kade stared at his hand. Her scent was on his skin. And under it… Children. Two. Pups. Mine. His head snapped up. “You’re lying. You can’t” The office door opened. A small voice piped up from the hallway. “Mommy? Who’s the scary man?” Kade’s heart stopped. A little girl stood there. Four years old. Black hair. Ice gray eyes. _His eyes._ She clutched the hand of a little boy. Same age. Same eyes. Same stubborn chin. Twins. Lyra moved instantly, putting her body between Kade and the children. Protective. Lethal. Luna. “Aria. Ash. Back to the car with Mrs. Chen. Now.” “But Mommy” “Now.” The twins obeyed, but the boy, Ash, stared at Kade the whole time. His little nose wrinkled. He sniffed the air. Then he looked at Lyra, confused. “Mommy… he smells like us.” The door closed. Silence. Kade couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t move. Five years. Two children. His children. His heirs. Hidden from him. Lyra turned back to him. Her face was blank. Empty. Dead. “You rejected me, Kade,” she said quietly. “You called me unworthy.” She picked up her folder. Walked to the door. Her hand on the handle, she paused. Didn’t look back. “So I became worthy. Without you.” The door clicked shut. Kade collapsed to his knees. His wolf was silent for the first time in five years. Not peaceful. Plotting.
