Chapter 2: A Night That Changed Everything

978 Words
Emily stood frozen as the tall stranger stepped out of the black luxury car. His sharp gray eyes met hers for only a second before he looked away, as if emotions were a weakness he had long forgotten. "Get in," he said calmly. His voice was deep, cold, and impossible to ignore. Emily hesitated. Every instinct told her to run, but she had no choice. Her mother's hospital bills were piling up, and this mysterious man was her only chance. The car was silent as it drove through the city. Minutes later, it stopped in front of a breathtaking mansion surrounded by iron gates and beautiful gardens. "Welcome to Blackwood Estate," the driver announced. Inside, everything looked perfect—expensive paintings, crystal chandeliers, and polished marble floors. Yet the house felt strangely empty. The man finally turned to face her. "My name is Alexander Knight." Emily's eyes widened. Everyone knew that name. Alexander Knight was the youngest billionaire in the country, the CEO of Knight Corporation, and one of the most powerful businessmen alive. He never appeared at parties, never gave interviews, and almost no one knew anything about his private life. "I have an offer for you," Alexander said. He placed a document on the table. "It is a one-year marriage contract." Emily stared at the papers, unable to believe what she was reading. "A fake marriage?" she whispered. "You will receive everything you need. Your mother's medical expenses will be paid in full. In return, you will act as my wife for one year." Emily looked into his cold eyes. "There must be a reason." For the first time, Alexander remained silent. Then he spoke softly. "My family is hiding a secret." Before Emily could ask another question, the mansion lights suddenly went out. A loud crash echoed through the hallway. Someone had entered the house.Emily's heart pounded as the mansion lights suddenly went out. Darkness swallowed the hallway. "Stay behind me," Alexander ordered. His calm voice made it clear this wasn't the first time something like this had happened. Footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Then— Bang! A vase shattered in the living room. Alexander quickly pulled Emily behind him and took out a small flashlight from a nearby drawer. "Who are you?" he shouted. No answer. Only silence. A few seconds later, the emergency lights flickered on, casting a dim glow throughout the mansion. The security guards rushed inside. "Mr. Knight! We searched the property, but no one is here." Alexander frowned. "Check every camera." "Yes, sir." Emily noticed something strange. A white envelope lay on the floor where the vase had broken. Alexander picked it up. Inside was a single sentence. "You can't hide the truth forever." His face instantly turned cold. Emily had never seen someone lose all expression so quickly. "What does it mean?" she asked. Alexander folded the letter and slipped it into his pocket. "It has nothing to do with you." "But someone broke into your house." "I'll handle it." Emily looked at him carefully. For a moment, she realized the world's most powerful billionaire wasn't just hiding wealth— He was hiding fear. The next morning, Alexander took Emily to the top floor of Knight Corporation. Employees stopped working as they watched them walk past. "Is that... Mr. Knight?" "And who's the woman beside him?" "They look so close..." Whispers spread across the office. Inside his private office, Alexander placed the marriage contract on the desk again. "I need your answer today." Emily stared at the papers. "If I sign this... my life will never be the same." "No," Alexander replied quietly. "It will never be safe again." Emily looked up. "What are you trying to protect me from?" Alexander walked to the window overlooking the city. After a long silence, he finally spoke. "My father didn't die in an accident." Emily's eyes widened. "He was murdered." Before she could say another word, Alexander's phone rang. His expression changed the moment he answered. "What?" He stood up immediately. "Who took her?" A long silence followed. Then he slowly lowered the phone. His voice was colder than ever. "They've kidnapped my grandmother." To Be Continued...Emily felt the room spin. "Kidnapped?" she whispered. Alexander grabbed his car keys without another word. "Come with me." "What? Why?" "Because if they know about you, leaving you alone would be even more dangerous." Minutes later, the black car sped through the city under the pouring rain. Neither of them spoke. Finally, Emily broke the silence. "Who would dare kidnap your grandmother?" Alexander's jaw tightened. "The same people who killed my father." Emily looked at him in shock. "You know who they are?" "I know enough to fear them." The car stopped at an old warehouse on the edge of the city. The place looked abandoned. Broken windows. Rusted gates. Complete silence. Alexander's phone buzzed. A message appeared. Come inside alone... or she dies. Emily grabbed his arm. "It's a trap." "I know." "Then don't go." Alexander looked at her for a long moment. "For fifteen years, my grandmother has protected me. Tonight, it's my turn." Before he could step forward, Emily noticed a small red light blinking on a nearby wall. "Wait!" Alexander stopped. "What's wrong?" She pointed toward the light. "It looks like... a bomb sensor." Alexander carefully examined the wall. His face darkened. "If we had taken one more step..." "The entire entrance would have exploded," he finished. Someone wasn't just trying to kidnap his grandmother. Someone wanted Alexander Knight dead. Just then, a weak voice echoed from inside the warehouse. "Alexander... don't come in..." It was his grandmother. Alexander clenched his fists. "No matter what happens," he said quietly, "I'm bringing her home." He stepped toward the darkness as Emily followed close behind, knowing that once they crossed the doorway, nothing in their lives would ever be the same.
