Chapter 3

"Why not?" Richard's voice was firm. "The divorce isn't finalized yet. Stay here. If any issues come up, it'll be easier to deal with them." I thought it over. Then I decided to stay. Seven days. That's all. When the week was over, I'd leave for good. For the next three days, I barely left my room. The less I ran into Richard, the better. Then one night, I got a call from a bridal boutique. They told me the custom wedding gowns Vincent had ordered for me had just arrived from France, and asked me to come in the next day for a fitting. Only then did I remember something. The sapphire necklace my mother had left me was still locked inside the safe in Richard's bedroom. It was the last thing my mother had ever given me. No matter what, I wanted to wear it when I walked into my next wedding. Without hesitation, I knocked on the bedroom door. The one who opened it was Lydia. She was wearing a skimpy lace nightgown, her skin covered in fresh love bites. I didn't need to guess what they'd been doing before I knocked. The moment she saw me, a smug, provocative smile spread across her face. "Sharon, what brings you here?" "I'm here for my necklace," I said flatly. "The sapphire necklace in the safe." "Oh, that necklace?" She dragged out the words before leaning close enough that only I could hear. "You mean the one your dead mother left you? That bad luck charm? I flushed that ugly thing down the toilet." Smack! "You hit me?" My palm tingled from the slap. I stared at her coldly. "Where's my necklace?" Hearing the commotion, Richard rushed over and immediately pulled Lydia behind him. "Lydia, what happened? Are you hurt?" She buried herself in his arms, her voice trembling. "Richard, Sharon came for her necklace. I thought it was beautiful, so I tried it on. I accidentally broke it, so I sent it out to be repaired. She's upset, and I understand. It was my fault." Lydia sniffled softly. But when she looked at me, her eyes were full of triumph. Richard rubbed his forehead, looking exhausted. "When are you going to stop this? Lydia didn't do it on purpose. Why do you always have to make things difficult for her?" I held out my hand. One word at a time, I said, "Give me my necklace!" Richard finally lost his patience. He grabbed my arm so hard it hurt. "She already told you it's being repaired! Can't you just wait?" Pain shot through my arm. I struggled to pull free, but his grip was too strong. Without holding back, I slapped him across the face. The sharp c***k stunned everyone. Richard froze, disbelief written all over his face. "Sharon, have you lost your mind? It's just a damn necklace! Is it really worth making this kind of scene?" Just a damn necklace? It was the last thing my mother had ever left me. The night I lost the last family member I had, Richard held me tightly and swore. "Sharon, I'll protect everything that's precious to you." Because of that promise, in my previous life, I clung to that marriage like it was my last lifeline. I refused to divorce him. In the end, the only person I trapped was myself.
