The Price of Rejection

1140 Words
By the time Elena returned to the packhouse, the entire Blood Moon Pack knew. The bond was gone. She could feel their eyes following her as she crossed the courtyard. Some wolves looked shocked. Others looked afraid. A few looked at her with something dangerously close to admiration. Elena kept walking. She had expected whispers. She had expected judgment. What she hadn't expected was silence. The pack members moved aside as she approached, creating a path without anyone daring to stop her. Mara was waiting at the entrance. Her face was pale. "Elena." "I'm fine." Mara hadn't even asked. That was how obvious it was that Elena looked different. Not weaker. Different. The faint silver glow beneath Elena's skin had disappeared, but something else remained. A strange warmth moved through her veins. She ignored it. "Has Damian made an announcement?" Elena asked. Mara shook her head. "No." "Where is he?" "In the Alpha's office." "Good." Elena walked toward the stairs. Mara hurried after her. "You're going to see him?" "Yes." "After what happened?" Elena glanced back. "Especially after what happened." She reached the top of the stairs. Before she could continue, a warrior appeared at the end of the corridor. "Lady Elena." She stopped. "What is it?" "The Alpha has ordered that you surrender the Luna's quarters." Mara's eyes widened. Elena's expression didn't change. "Anything else?" The warrior swallowed. "He also ordered you to hand over the Luna's insignia." Elena smiled. "Of course." She removed the silver crescent pendant hanging around her neck. It was the symbol of the Luna. She held it out. The warrior hesitated. "Take it." He accepted it. Elena looked at the pendant for a moment. Three years. She had worn it proudly. She had believed it represented her place beside Damian. Now it meant nothing. "Tell the Alpha he can keep his title." She turned away. "And tell him I don't need it." The warrior bowed and left. Mara stared at Elena. "You aren't angry?" "No." "Not even a little?" Elena looked at her. "Why should I be angry because he took away something I no longer want?" Mara smiled faintly. "You're different." Elena looked toward the window. "Maybe I finally remembered who I am." Before Mara could respond, a sharp pain suddenly pierced Elena's chest. She stopped. Her hand went to her heart. Mara rushed toward her. "Elena!" "I'm fine." But Elena wasn't sure. The pain disappeared almost as quickly as it came. Then she heard something. Not with her ears. Inside her mind. A whisper. Blood remembers. Elena froze. Mara stared at her. "What happened?" "Nothing." Elena didn't know what had just spoken to her. But she knew one thing. It hadn't been Damian. She pushed the strange voice aside. There were more important things to deal with. She walked toward the Alpha's office. When she entered, Damian was standing by the window. Sophia sat on the sofa. Several pack elders were also present. Elena stopped. Damian turned. His eyes immediately settled on her. For a moment, the room was silent. Then one of the elders spoke. "Elena, you have broken the mate bond." "I have." "You understand the seriousness of what you've done?" "Completely." "You have rejected the Alpha." "Yes." "And yet you expect to remain in this pack?" Elena looked at him calmly. "I was born into this pack." The elder frowned. "You were brought here as the Alpha's mate." "No." Elena's voice became firm. "I was born a daughter of the Blood Moon Pack. I became the Alpha's mate afterward." The room went quiet. The distinction mattered. Damian's eyes narrowed. Elena continued. "I don't need a mate bond to prove where I belong." One elder exchanged a glance with another. Damian finally spoke. "Enough." Everyone fell silent. He walked toward Elena. "You've made your choice." "Yes." "Then you cannot remain Luna." "I know." "You will leave the Alpha's residence." "I know." "You will surrender your authority." "I already have." Damian stared at her. "Then what do you want?" Elena met his gaze. "My freedom." He laughed bitterly. "You think walking away from me means you're free?" "No." Elena smiled. "I think rejecting you means I finally stopped pretending that I wasn't." Damian's expression darkened. Sophia shifted on the sofa. Elena looked at her. "Sophia." Sophia looked up. "Yes?" "You can have the room beside Damian." Sophia's eyes widened. Elena continued. "You can have the title." She glanced at Damian. "You can have the man." Then she turned back to Sophia. "But don't ever expect me to call you family." Sophia looked away. Elena walked toward the door. Damian's voice stopped her. "Where will you go?" Elena looked back. "Somewhere you can't control." Then she left. Outside the office, Mara was waiting. "Are you really leaving?" Elena nodded. "Tonight." Mara looked worried. "Where will you go?" "I don't know yet." That was the truth. But for the first time, not knowing didn't frighten her. It excited her. Elena returned to her room and packed only what belonged to her. Clothes. A few personal belongings. Her grandmother's pendant. And the old photograph from her wedding. She looked at the photograph one last time. Then she tore it in half. Not angrily. Not dramatically. Simply because she no longer wanted to keep a picture of a marriage that had ended. She placed the pieces in the trash. Then she walked out. The packhouse doors opened before her. The night air touched her face. Elena took one deep breath. Freedom. It tasted different from what she expected. She took one step forward. Then another. But before she reached the gates, every wolf in the courtyard suddenly lowered its head. Elena stopped. A deep growl rolled through the darkness beyond the pack boundary. Not a normal wolf. Not a rogue. Something much larger. Something ancient. The warriors immediately drew their weapons. Damian appeared at the top of the stairs. "What is that?" No one answered. Then a figure stepped from the shadows. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed entirely in black. His eyes glowed a strange silver beneath the moonlight. Every wolf in the courtyard dropped to their knees. Except Elena. The stranger looked directly at her. And smiled. "Finally." Elena's eyebrows drew together. "Finally what?" His smile widened. "The last bloodline has awakened." Elena froze. Damian's expression changed. "What bloodline?" The stranger never looked at him. His eyes remained fixed on Elena. "The one your ancestors spent centuries trying to hide." Elena's pulse quickened. The stranger extended his hand. "Come with me, Elena." She didn't move. "Who are you?" His answer sent a chill through the entire courtyard. "The man who has been searching for you since the day you were born." And for the first time that night, Elena realized something terrifying. Rejecting Damian hadn't been the end of her story. It had been the beginning.
