The Man Who Knew My Name

1156 Words
The courtyard remained frozen. No one moved. No one dared to breathe too loudly. The stranger stood beyond the pack gates as though the warriors surrounding him were nothing more than shadows. Elena studied him carefully. He was tall—taller than Damian. His black coat moved slightly in the night wind, revealing a silver emblem stitched across his chest. A crescent moon surrounded by three claw marks. Elena had never seen the symbol before. Yet something about it felt strangely familiar. "Who are you?" she asked again. The stranger smiled. "My name is Lucian." Damian stepped down from the packhouse stairs. His expression was hard. "You have no permission to enter Blood Moon territory." Lucian finally looked at him. "I don't need your permission." The warriors immediately raised their weapons. Damian's eyes flashed gold. "You are standing on my land." Lucian's smile disappeared. "Your land?" His voice was quiet. "You really still believe the land belongs to you." The atmosphere changed. Several elders exchanged nervous glances. Elena looked between the two men. There was history here. History she didn't understand. Damian stepped forward. "State your business." Lucian's gaze returned to Elena. "I came for her." Damian's expression hardened. "She isn't going anywhere." Elena raised an eyebrow. "Interesting." Both men looked at her. She folded her arms. "You've both been speaking about me as if I'm standing here without ears." Damian opened his mouth. Elena raised one hand. "No." Her voice was firm. "Don't start." She looked at Lucian. "You said you've been searching for me since I was born." "Yes." "Why?" Lucian's expression became serious. "Because your mother asked me to find you." Elena froze. Her mother. The word struck harder than she expected. Her mother had died when Elena was young. At least, that was what Elena had always been told. "What do you know about my mother?" "More than your Alpha ever wanted you to know." Damian's eyes flashed. "Enough." Lucian ignored him. "Your mother wasn't an ordinary wolf, Elena." Elena stared at him. "What was she?" Lucian took a step closer. "She belonged to a bloodline that disappeared from the supernatural world more than twenty years ago." One of the elders gasped. "That's impossible." Lucian glanced at him. "Is it?" The elder immediately lowered his head. Elena noticed. They knew something. All of them. She turned toward Damian. "You knew." It wasn't a question. Damian's silence told her everything. Elena's expression hardened. "You knew something about my family." "Elena—" "Don't." She stepped toward him. "For three years, I stood beside you." Her voice remained controlled. "You knew things about me that I didn't know about myself." Damian said nothing. "Why?" His jaw tightened. "Because some truths are dangerous." Elena laughed once. "Apparently, I'm the only person in this pack who wasn't allowed to know the truth about my own life." Lucian spoke quietly. "Your mother hid you here because she believed the Blood Moon Pack would protect you." Elena turned toward him. "Protect me from what?" Lucian's eyes darkened. "The people who killed her." Silence. Elena's face became still. "My mother wasn't killed by an illness?" "No." "Who killed her?" "We don't know." Lucian paused. "But we know they were searching for you." Elena's fingers tightened around her bag. "Why?" "Because of what you carry in your blood." A strange warmth moved through Elena's veins again. The same sensation she had felt in the shrine. The ancient whisper returned. Blood remembers. She closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them, Lucian was watching her carefully. "You heard it." Elena's eyes narrowed. "Heard what?" "The voice." Her stomach tightened. "What voice?" Lucian smiled faintly. "The one that has been sleeping inside you." Damian stepped between them. "That's enough." Elena's gaze snapped toward him. "No." The single word silenced him. She had spent enough years allowing Damian to decide what she could and couldn't know. That ended tonight. She walked around him. Then she stood directly in front of Lucian. "What am I?" Lucian looked into her eyes. "That is the question you should have been asking all your life." Elena waited. He finally answered. "You are the last descendant of the Moonblood line." A murmur spread through the courtyard. Even Damian looked shaken. Elena frowned. "What does that mean?" "It means your wolf isn't ordinary." Lucian's gaze moved briefly toward the sky. "Your blood carries a power older than the Alpha bloodlines." Damian scoffed. "Fairy tales." Lucian looked at him. "You can keep pretending." Then he looked at Elena again. "But she can't." Elena felt another pulse of energy move through her body. This time, it was stronger. Her eyes widened. The pendant around her neck suddenly became hot. She grabbed it. The silver metal began glowing. Gasps erupted around the courtyard. The pendant had never done that before. Lucian smiled. "There it is." Damian stared at Elena. "What is happening?" Elena didn't answer. The glow intensified. Then the ground beneath her feet trembled. A powerful wave of energy exploded outward. The warriors stumbled backward. Several windows in the packhouse shattered. Elena remained standing. Her hair lifted in the wind. Her eyes burned silver. For one brief moment, everyone in the courtyard bowed instinctively. Everyone except Lucian. And Damian. Lucian's expression was almost reverent. "Your blood has finally recognized you." Elena looked at her hands. The glow slowly faded. Her breathing remained steady. She looked at Lucian. "What happens now?" He smiled. "Now, Elena, you stop running from what you are." She glanced at Damian. Then at the packhouse. Then back at Lucian. She had already rejected her mate. She had already surrendered her title. She had already walked away from the life she thought she wanted. There was nothing left to lose. "Fine." Elena lifted her chin. "Tell me everything." Lucian smiled. "Not here." He extended his hand. "Come with me." Elena looked at his hand. Then at Damian. The Alpha stood completely still. For the first time, Elena saw something she had never seen in his eyes before. Fear. Not anger. Not pride. Fear. And somehow, that told her more than any explanation could. Elena took Lucian's hand. Damian stepped forward. "Elena." She stopped. He stared at her. "Don't go." Elena looked at him for several seconds. Then she smiled. "Three years ago, I would have stayed because you asked." She gently pulled her hand free from Lucian's. "But that woman is gone." She turned away from Damian. "Now, if you want me to stay somewhere, you'll have to give me a reason." And Damian had none. Elena walked through the gates with Lucian. This time, she didn't look back. Behind her, Damian watched the woman he had taken for granted disappear into the darkness. And somewhere deep inside the forest, something ancient opened its eyes. It had been waiting for Elena. For years. And now that she had awakened, the entire supernatural world would soon learn her name.
