Chapter 7

Chapter 7 I stood in the doorway watching as Kristina hurried towards the wooded area. She gave me the impression of being a sweet and caring young woman. I don't wish it upon any woman to be my uncle's mate. I saw her enter the treeline and disappear. I sent a silent prayer to the moon goddess to keep her safe. Holger would be back any moment. I closed the door and hid it with a sliding door that looked like the wall. I knew there were only moments until he got here, and he would be furious. I went to the bathroom and took out the braid in my hair, which was down to my hips. I started to brush it; I felt like a princess brushing her hair with a thousand strokes so it gets all shiny. I kept busy to keep my nerves under control. Not even three minutes passed before the bathroom door was yanked open with excessive force. Holger's alpha aura was crushing me from the inside out. I dropped my hairbrush as his aura forced me down on my knees. Quick and stomping steps came down the stairs as Holger gave the alpha command for me to tell him where his mate is. I am a useless alpha werewolf-born girl with no wolf, but I do have powers given to me by the moon goddess. I am naturally a healer and meant to be a protector to a special chosen alpha by the moon goddess. He is yet to be born. I would know if he were, and I would be drawn to him and his pack. Holger kicks me in my belly, really hard. It makes me spit blood on his shoes. I gets angrier and kicks me in my ribs. The air leaves my lungs, and I am gasping for air. I'm wheezing with the greatest effort. My father surprises me by punching his brother square to the jaw, in my defense of all things. He never protects me, usually. "Holger the brat won't give any answers as usual. You waste your time. It is better to mobilize the packs and start searching." "I am sure she is hiding my mate or at least let her go." I don't defend myself; he is right. He knows how I returned the bodies of his previous dead mates to their families and warned them of what a crazy man he is. I still struggle to breathe. "Daughter, don't involve yourself in werewolf affairs. Not now or in the future. Next time I will let my brother kill you." I groan loudly as I try to stand and look my father in his cold eyes. Show that I will not be bullied even if they break my body. Damn it, I won't let them defeat me, not now, not ever. I watch them leave. Both my father and uncle are bad men. Killer wolves, bad mates, they don't care about women or she-wolves; all they want from women are s*x and heirs. They are great to other men but not to women. I limp out of the bathroom and lie down on my couch. I close my eyes and focus on healing. In a minute, I am fully healed. They never asked how I can heal so quickly after beatings, and they know I have no wolf. It makes me smile. They don't care to know; same with every pack member. They all usually keep away from me. No one wants to interact with me if they don't have to. It's not that they hate me. I am just not a werewolf, so I don't fit in. I get on my feet and hurriedly but soundlessly sneak up the stairs and eavesdrop on the pack and my father to see what they plan. There are rushed steps, sounds like an entire army on the move. Poor Kristina, I don't know how she will get out of this alive. I listen to the alpha's booming commands, from both of them. They are sending warriors to every bus stop near the city, as well as to every train station and the airport. It will not be easy to get out of the city. I hear every order, every command. They focus on every part of the city but not the pack house grounds. Luckily for Kristina. In my uncle Holger's pack, no females are allowed to fight or be warriors. They can't even train. But my father allows the females to be warriors and train until they are mated and have pups. Only a handful of pack members are left in the house. It is too risky to go to Kristina's hiding spot. I need to keep busy to keep from losing my mind. I decide to go to the pack house kitchen and start dinner for everyone. For a moment, I was thinking of adding a sleeping potion to the food, but that would have been detected, and I would be punished. I made a huge amount of chicken stew and put some omegas to work on peeling potatoes. I had millions of thoughts and ideas about how to help Kristina get out of Dodge without being detected and preferably without me being labeled as a traitor again. It's in my nature to help people. I hate to see anyone suffer or be in a situation where they can get hurt. Omegas do as I say without any qualm. We work as a team to get dinner ready. Those that are in the pack house eat right away, and shortly after they eat, the entire army of wolves turns up and is hungry. I get looks as if I'm good you are here and being useful and not off playing hero. "Daughter, its good you made yourself useful instead of playing savior to Holger's ltest mate." "Dad, I promise I don't know where she is or why she left. I was in the bathroom where Holger found me." "Good, good. Keep that up. Keep your nose out of pack business." Rape and murder- did he call that pack business? No way. I will never keep my nose out of that, but I learned to be more careful since the punishment I got for trying to save Holger's last mate. I watch as they grab food and go to the large dining room. I need information. I take two pitchers of soda and go around the dining room and fill their glasses to try and hear some gossip. The ranked wolves don't say much when I am close, but I do have wolf hearing, and not even my father knows that. I listen and try to focus on not pouring the drinks in their laps, no matter how fun it would have been to do that. I listen in and hear how their search went without finding her and how they used Holger's shirt to get Kristina's scent. More than anything, they had been watching to see if she would turn up. They hoped she would turn up during the evening or night to try to get out of the city. They aren't wrong; I planned to get her out in the cover of darkness. They eat fast and get ready to go out again. They are determined to find Kristina and bring her back. I instruct the omegas to fix sandwiches for the warriors to bring with them as they leave and, after that, cook a late dinner—steak with roasted potatoes and veggies. After leaving instructions, I go down to my basement and roam through my cupboards and fridge. I need food for Kristina and me; it's been hours now; she must be starving. The house is deadly silent. I open my second secret door from my basement, a hatchway in the floor under the large Persian rug in the living room. It goes under the basement and house with secret tunnels. The tunnels lead you into the darkest part of the woods. With a backpack on my back, I go down the hatch trap door in the floor and take a few steps before shutting the trap door as silently as I possibly can. I have attached the rug to the hatch door in the floor so no one can see it even after I leave the basement. I start to walk farther into the tunnel. It's darker than a winter night here, but with wolf vision I can see as well as in daytime. I kept walking for almost thirty minutes before I got to a place at the end of the tunnel that was thick with bushes and trees. I stood there listening for a good while to be sure there were no warriors near the entrance to my hidden tunnel. I walked out of the bushes, and now I just had to get to the hideout carefully and hope Kristina was still there. I couldn't sense anyone following me or anyone near where I was in the forest, which made me suspicious. I went to a different cave than the one Kristina was in. One that was 40 minutes away from hers, to be sure they wouldn't find her if I were followed. I started a fire when I got in it. I used to sneak out to this cave to escape when my father had his disturbing parties. I'd just started the fire when Holger burst into the cave. It was a small one, with a rock formation that was perfect for a bed, and I had my old bedding there. I had slept here many nights in the past. He screamed at me, "I caught you, you little worm. You f*****g betrayer." He looked around, and right away he could see all of the cave, and there was no one else but me. In this cave there was no scent but mine. His face fell. He thought he caught me with his mate. In came my father and Beta, and they thought the same, but they all saw and smelled only me. On their faces was both disappointment and hope.
