Chapter 10

840 Words
Cicero and I just stared at each other a moment before it appeared as if a lightbulb went off behind his eyes and he gave a relieved smile. "Oh, sorry, that's Marissa. The first thing I grabbed out of my box was my cell phone to charge it and as soon as it turned on, I gave her your address so that she could come over. She gave me a quick text back saying she would head over after her gardening club meeting today. I'm willing to bet that's her. She's the witch your aunt was hoping could teach you about having the sight. She's one of your aunt's oldest friends and has the sight herself, well, she sees the past whereas you can see the future. But the mechanics are the same which is why she's best to help you in your aunt's absence." The knocking at the door came again, we both jumped and Cicero gave a nervous chuckle before striding to the bookcase and plucking the three books off the shelf, causing the door to vanish completely in the blink of an eye before he walked over, shuffled the books, plopped them back into the box they had been and closed the flaps over the top. He then continued walking to the door and opened it up plastering a smile on his face. Before I had a chance to try to figure out why he'd be hiding the family library from Marissa he was welcoming a woman in her early 60s into my living room. Marissa’s hair had a blue tinge to it, as if her hair had gone white prematurely and she was taking advantage of it to dye weird colors and the blue had been fading for quite some time. She was plump and appeared shorter than me and a jolly disposition seemed to ooze out of her pores. Feeling my cheeks flush I shot to my feet remembering, almost at the last second, that it was rude to not be standing when a guest entered your home. The older woman scanned the room until her eyes fell on me and her smile grew. "Oh, you must be Erin. Your aunt told me quite a bit about you, that was before she knew you were going to be the one to inherit your family's gift. And I see Cicero is already in human form which must've been quite a shock." She headed right toward me, holding out her arms and grabbing my hand and patting it as she spoke, looking into my eyes with kindness and sympathy. "I'm so sorry none of this is going according to plan. In an ideal world your aunt would've had time to tell you what was happening and to prep you for it. The less than ideal situation was that Cicero was going to give me a call and I was going to stop by under the pretense of being your aunt's friend and broached the idea of being a witch to you and seeing as he's not a cat I'm assuming it didn't even go according to plan B. I'm so sorry for that," her voice was soothing and gentle and I felt myself relax a bit for the first time since my car had parked in my parking spot. Feeling my manners come rushing back to me my face flushed again, "can I get you something to eat or drink while you're here?" Her eyes sparkled at me and she smiled wider, "I would love a glass of water if that's all right. I don't require anything to eat, the garden club usually has more sugary sweets than I should be eating at my age and I indulged a little bit before heading here." She patted my hand before letting go. Nodding I motioned towards the couch, "please take a seat I'll grab you a glass of water." I scuttled from the room seeing as how this would be the only time I was probably going to be alone for the foreseeable future. Little had I known I had not been alone in two weeks. But I didn't want to spend too much time dwelling on that. The fact that there had been a grown man wandering around my house when I was showering or taking a bath or sleeping was somewhat distressing. On the plus side I did have a guest room all made up with a bed, a dresser, and a nightstand so at least there was some where for him to sleep other than curled up as a cat in my bed. Taking the time I slowly filled up three medium-sized glasses from my large Brita filter I kept in the fridge. I took the chance to take some deep breaths to get my nerves to calm down. My world had been turned upside down in the span of half an hour and the whole thing was insane. But having some kind of break down in my kitchen is not the answer.
