Chapter 9

Amara I fell on top of him — ohh no. I felt electricity shoot throughout my body and nerves. Alpha Magnus's hold was tighter on me, my face was close to him, well, too close. We could feel the warmth of each other's breath. He was drunk. I could smell the alcohol on his breath. I gulped. "Alpha…" I said, breathing heavily. His proximity was bothering me and Zia was dancing in my head. He just stared at me with his unfocused eyes. I tried to get up from his lap, but he didn't let me. Then he did something I had never imagined — he buried his head in the crook of my neck and filled his nostrils with my scent. I panted. "Please… alp— alpha, let me go." My voice came out broken. I could feel so many sparks creeping on my body. But he didn't stop. His nose was softly creasing my neck, slow and deliberate, like he was memorizing something. "Alpha, please let me go," I whispered again, trying to move away. He groaned and lifted his head off my neck. His eyes were soft, not like those eyes he always gave me, the ones full of hatred and disgust. I guessed he was doing this because the alcohol had blurred his senses. Who knew — maybe he was thinking I was Chloe. I felt an ache and pain clench in my heart at that thought. "Alpha, I am not Chloe," I said, forcing those harsh words out with difficulty, each one paining me as I spoke them. He chuckled. My eyes widened. Wait.. did he just chuckle? And damn, he looked hell handsome with that. I hadn't noticed before — he had a dimple on his left cheek. This was the first time I was seeing him this close, and he was even more handsome up close than from far away. That was dangerous information for my heart to have held in me. "I know you are not Chloe. You are omega, Amara, aren't you?" he said, his voice coming out surprisingly normal, like we weren't in the most inappropriate situation. Before I could say anything, he continued. "Is he your boyfriend?" His brows knitted together, and I realized he was talking about Tom. "Why does it matter to you?" I said, feeling anger building inside me. "Answer me, for God's sake," he hissed. I folded my arms, clearly showing my displeasure without saying a word. "It does not matter, Alpha, what he is or not. When you have a chosen mate, I can do whatever I want," I said arrogantly, meeting his eyes boldly. His hold tightened around me. I moaned in pain. "It is hurting me, Alpha, please leave." His hold finally loosened. This time his eyes were showing anger.. s**t, his wolf was on the surface. Without thinking, to stop him, I unconsciously put my hand on his shoulder. Feeling my touch, his eyes returned to blue. I let out a quiet breath. "Please, Alpha Magnus, focus on your mate," I said quietly, steadying my voice as best as I could. "You already made it clear we are not meant for each other." After saying that, I finally untangled his hold from my waist with all my strength and hurried out of his room, not looking back even once. I went straight to the kitchen. My hand moved over my heart. It was beating faster than usual. I could still feel his warm touch on me, still lingering on my skin. My eyes filled with tears. His behaviour was a mystery to me. What was he doing and why was that question about whether I had a boyfriend or not. He had already made it clear he refused to accept me as his mate. He had rejected me in the cruelest way possible, yet here he was, drunk and asking about the men in my life like that it was his right. My resolution to stay away from him always broke whenever I tried to avoid him. This time I would do better. I had to. ‘But I don't want to avoid him’, Zia said, feeling sad. ‘What do you want me to do, Zia? Sit on his lap and have a cozy conversation with him?’ I said under my breath, pressing my palms flat against the cold kitchen counter, grounding myself. ‘Why do you always forget that man threatened to kill us.’ I said it angrily, still remembering his harsh words. But she was quiet, still whimpering somewhere deep in my head, curled around that mate bond like it was something precious instead of a curse. I sighed. It was not her fault. She was an animal. She was bound to feel that pull for a mate no matter how much the human side of me screamed. Julie came into the kitchen. "Did you bring the food to Alpha?" she asked, glancing around. I nodded. "Hmm. I'm going to sleep. I am very tired," she said and went to her room without another word. She was tired. Why? this woman would not drink water on her own if someone did not hand it to her. Chloe still hadn't come back. Well.. I wished she never came back. She had snatched my mate without even trying, without even wanting him the way I had wanted him before I knew better. Chloe had so many boyfriends in the past that I did not even think that woman would settle with one man. Would Magnus know. Well. A man like him deserved Chloe as his mate. Both of them were arrogant pricks. I told myself that firmly. Finally, sleep time. I laid on my bed and sleep swallowed me fast. The next morning I woke up early. Zia wanted to run, so I let her. After running I came back, finished my morning work, and came outside. It was loud out there. Unusually loud. Chloe was at the center of it all — like she was a queen, and Magnus was also there, standing tall at the front. So many people surrounded them. Even Jack and his mate were there. I frowned. What was happening? I moved closer to see. The moment Chloe spotted me she ran over and grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the training ground with that fake, performing smile plastered on her face. People were shouting and cheering. I hated public gatherings. Why did I even come here, stupid me. "What is happening, Chloe?" I asked. She gave me another fake smile, I would appreciate her if she gave me her usual scowl. "Magnus is teaching his fighting techniques. Many wolves are here to learn from my infamous Alpha," she said, her voice full of pride. My infamous alpha. My jealousy surfaced but I stopped that right away. Magnus stood on top of the plinth, tall and unbothered by the crowd of eyes watching him. "Everyone, I would love to teach you," he said, and his voice carried that authority and command that made girls swoon visibly. I rolled my eyes. Chloe shifted closer to him, and then she turned, her eyes flicking to me like she had planned this. "Alpha Magnus start with the omegas," she said sweetly, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Since they are soft and less powerful." Laughter rippled through the crowd. b***h. Magnus stood just as expressionless as always. There were only three omegas present — me and two male wolves. I wanted to turn around and walk back inside. This was not a training session. This was a humiliation session. "So — omegas, come here. You have the first privilege to learn," Magnus said. I cursed myself and my stupid curiosity, even though I know curiosity killed the kitten now it would kill the she wolf. I moved to stand at the center of the ground with the other two omegas. Magnus came down the stairs toward us, and then in one swift motion he pulled his t-shirt off over his head. My breath hitched. Well — not only mine. Most of the women on that ground forgot how to breathe. His strong, masculine chest was on full display. God, this man was built from stone. I hated that I noticed. I hated that I could not stop noticing. "Alpha Magnus, start with Amara," Chloe said from behind him, her voice dripping with the same sweetness when she creates trouble for me. Ohh no.
