Chapter 10

1032 Words
Amara Magnus stopped just inches away from me. Zia was in a haze..umm. he was half naked in front of us, the heat radiating from his bare skin more intoxicating than the alcohol. His blue eyes were devoid of any expression. Icy, professional, and infuriatingly unreadable, of course. What was I supposed to do? I felt like a fool standing here, surrounded by powerful wolves — especially an alpha who hated me. "Are you ready, Omega?" Magnus said coldly. He didn't look at Chloe. He kept his gaze locked on mine. "Attack me, Omega Amara," he commanded. My heart skipped many beats. This was the first time he had said my name. I was so stupid..I could be happy just hearing my name from his lips. Wow, stupid me. A ripple of laughter went through the pack and I snapped out of my daydream. "Amara, if you attack the Alpha, who knows this might be your last day," someone shouted from the back. I recognized the voice. One of Chloe's friends. "So what? She's useless anyway," another one added. Chloe smirked, crossing her arms over her chest, looking like she was enjoying every second of my humiliation. "I am an Omega, Alpha," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "I'm afraid I cannot do that. We don't attack. We only survive." "Then survive this," he countered. Before I could blink, his hand shot out and grabbed my forearm. The contact was electric. Sparks — those cursed, beautiful sparks shot up my arm, making my breath hitch because my mate was touching me. He didn't pull me. He simply held me, his thumb grazing the sensitive skin of my wrist. I trembled. Another wave of laughter rolled through the crowd. "Look at her — Alpha only touched her and she looks like she's about to pass out," someone shouted again. "Your pulse is racing," Magnus whispered, low enough that only I could hear. "Is that fear, Omega? Or something else?" "Let go,I didn't want to fight or learn anything" I said. I didn't even want to be here at all. But his grip didn't loosen from my wrist. "In a real fight, your enemy won't let go just because you ask politely," he said loudly, for the benefit of the crowd. Then he leaned closer, his voice dropping to a murmur. "Last night, you couldn't wait to run away. Today, everyone is watching. Where are you going to run now?" I gulped. ‘Don't run, Fight back Amara. At least try. Show him we aren't just omegas — we can fight and bleed’, Zia urged, I could feel her rage. Damn. Zia was not thinking straight. I looked past Magnus and found Chloe. Her smile was faltering. She had noticed the proximity between us. She had noticed that he wasn't looking at her. Cold, sharp rage replaced the panic in my chest, I hoped she would not know I was his mate . "Fine," I said. "Let's see what you can teach me, Alpha." He raised his brows at my tone. I turned my gaze toward the others and found every person was staring at me, with eyes narrowed. Had I overdone it? "Start," Magnus said. I raised my hand to strike his chest. He was watching my every move like a hawk, already moving to stop it, but in the same breath, I changed direction and attacked my fist into his stomach with everything I had. It didn't hurt him, but it hurt my hand. God, was this man made of stone? But I heard the murmurs ripple around me. I was sure he hadn't expected me to change my move. I doubted anyone had. I thought Magnus would be angry. He wasn't. "That was a smart move, Omega," he said, loud enough for everyone to hear. Then he continued, "As you just saw, never let your enemy know where you plan to strike, the way Omega Amara did. Now watch and learn." The way he said it made it clear now he had known exactly what I was doing. He had seen it coming.. and he had let me do it anyway. Let me look smart in front of everyone. Chloe was staring at me with pure hatred now. The others had gone quiet. No one was mocking me anymore. Magnus continued the session, teaching a few more things, to me and the other omegas. I paid attention this time. I took notes. I actually listened, that was helpful. This man was sharp. Dangerously smart. An Alpha in every sense of the word. My eyes drifted to Jack. He looked jealous, standing off to the side with that tight expression he always wore when something wasn't going his way. stupid man. I smiled inside. Jack was a weak Alpha, everyone knew it. His father, Alpha Xavier, carried that disappointment like a stone around his neck. Jack was his only heir, and it showed in every room they both walked into. My day had not gone the way I expected. Well, not even close. I smiled to myself as I walked back, replaying Magnus's words in my head. That was a smart move, Omega. It was the first time anyone had ever complimented me, Zia was howling in joy and doing a happy dance, in my head. I made dinner. Everyone settled around the table, the usual noise filling the room. My eyes kept flickering to Magnus but he just sat there, staring at his food, still unreadable, still cold. When Dad and Julie moved to get up from their seats, Chloe spoke. "Mom. Dad." She smiled softly, she shyly glanced at Magnus. I didn't know why my heart was racing "Me and Alpha Magnus wanted to say something, well, announce something." My ears perked up. Something about the way she was smiling at him made my heart slam against my ribs again. Dad sat back down. "Of course, dear," Julie said warmly, beaming at them both. Magnus's face was expressionless. Blank and Cold as always. And then he said the words that stopped my heart completely. "Chloe and I are planning to get engaged tomorrow. We wanted to make our relationship official."
