Chapter 12

Amara

My heart was doing a full-on speed marathon the moment he stepped closer. Oh goddess. I swear my heart was about to jump out of my chest.

As he came nearer, and I closed my eyes, bracing for bad, and when I heard nothing I slowly opened my eyes, he had already walked past me, heading straight toward someone who had just come through the entrance.

I quickly pulled myself together, I took a sharp breath, trying to act normal.

"Amara."

Tom's voice snapped me back to reality. My eyes snapped at him and I laughed nervously, probably looking like a complete i***t.

Damn. What the hell was I even doing? Why did I think Magnus would come to me of all people?

"Amara, you're acting strange today," Tom said, looking at me w

Suspiciously.

"I'm okay," I said softly, not really wanting to get into any mess. He sighed and let it go.

"Alright, I'm going to go talk to my aunt, let's see if this is possible" he assured me and walked away.

I shifted my attention to the new person Magnus was talking to. The man looked like he was in his early fifties, a warm fatherly figure, and the way Magnus was speaking to him, easy, friendly, they were obviously related somehow.

But he was not Magnus' father as he already died, I heard this from Julie.

Magnus eventually guided the man toward my so-called family.

"Beta Kyle, Chloe, this is my uncle Steve. More like my family," Magnus said warmly. His expression was warm and genuinely friendly. It was honestly the first time I had ever seen him look like that, not even with Chloe.

The man, Steve, beamed at him and placed a hand on his shoulder with that kind of easy affection only real family members do.

"Beta Kyle, his Luna Julie," Magnus continued the introductions, then presented Chloe as his mate.

Why was I even still standing here? Probably for further hell, knowing my miserable luck.

"Nice to meet you," Chloe said, giving Steve that fake smile of hers.

Steve smiled back warmly. "Well, well, now I understand why Magnus was so happy when he told me he found his mate."

He looked at Chloe with a fatherly kind of fondness, and I hate that. "Anyone would be happy to have someone as beautiful as you, he praised her."

Chloe blushed.

I pulled my eyes away from the whole scene and found myself sitting on a chair in the corner. The party kept going around me, noise and laughter and clinking glasses, all of it blurring into the background noise, it seemed like everything was mocking me.

Then the microphone crackled.

"Thank you all for being here tonight." Dad aka Chloe's father's voice boomed across the room, proud and loud.

"As you know, today my beloved daughter Chloe will be officially engaged to Red Stone Pack's Alpha Magnus, this day is for their happy union".

He called them both up to his side.

So this is it. This is the moment.

My eyes blurred but like always, I controlled my emotions.

You can survive this, Amara. Like you always do, hold on.

Magnus reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring. Diamond ring. Beautiful. He slid it onto Chloe's finger and the whole room erupted — clapping, cheering both of them, people hollering from the back.

Chloe also slipped a diamond ring onto Magnus's finger too, expensive just like his that caught the light. Julie looked like she was jumping up and down.

Magnus stayed composed, face unreadable, but I guessed he was happy from inside, because he got a powerful Luna. He just doesn't show things.

The whole time, he did not spare a single glance at me, not even once.

Not that I wanted him to do that. It would've killed me if he had.

Alpha Xavier and Jack looked like they were mentally already home.

Then Julie happily pushed the newly engaged couple toward the dance floor.

Magnus took Chloe's hand and she blushed and they moved together, easy and natural, like they belong to each other. Well they are. Match made in heaven and all that.

I sat there watching them, something quietly settled in my chest. Not peace exactly, but something close to acceptance.

Maybe one day I'll find someone else. Magnus was never meant for me. I understand that now.

Then the screaming started.

"Rogue!

Rogue!"

The shouts came from outside, only louder this time, and within seconds the whole room collapsed into chaos.

People were running here and there, shoving, screaming. Everyone was shifting, wolves pushing past each other toward the exits, and I had absolutely no idea what to do.

Run to my room? Umm no, Getting there seemed almost impossible, the crowd was a wall of bodies pushing in every direction.

I finally made it outside and my stomach dropped.

Ohh no.

There were so many of them. A hundred rogues. Maybe more. Why are they here? And damn,we had maybe forty wolves.

Then I heard it.. a loud growl so feral and deep it vibrated in my bones. Dark, dangerous, nothing like anything I'd heard before. I recognised the voice.

Mark.

Magnus's wolf was terrifying. He was bigger than Xavier's wolf, bigger than Jack's, bigger than anything I'd seen up till now.

He moved through those rogues like they were nothing, ripping their heads with a violence that turned my stomach and rooted me to the spot at the same time. His entire muzzle was smeared with blood.

I shivered.

He looks like a monster.

"Our mate is so strong," Zia said inside me, her voice almost giddy and proudly.

Is she serious right now?

‘Let me out, Amara,’ she begged me.

‘Absolutely not. We are omegas, Zia’. Those things out there are monsters.

Chloe's wolf Tee was fighting too, cutting through rogues with sharp, precise movements. The whole grounds had turned into a m******e. Blood everywhere.

The smell of it hit the back of my throat.

I pressed myself into a corner and stayed as still as possible. Most of the rogues were down. Mark was still going, relentless, wanting blood.

I exhaled finally for what felt like the first time in minutes.

Then I heard a feral growl, right behind me. Goddess someone was behind me.I froze and turned.

A rogue, close.. too close, was staring me down with dead and wild eyes. He raised one massive paw to attack me.

I closed my eyes.

So this is how the Moon Goddess decides to end my misery.My end was near.
