Lilly woke up earlier than her alarm. She'd been scouring her closet for what to wear since two hours ago, tossing outfits onto her bed, only to discard them moments later. Finally, she settled on a casual yet smart ensemble that would fit the client's aesthetic. "Maybe this will work," she muttered to herself, "I shouldn't be worrying so much about what to wear when my heart is so unsettled in my chest."
She dressed quickly, styled her hair, and did her makeup with practiced hands. "I've got this," she affirmed, giving herself a firm nod in the mirror.
With time to spare, she ordered a ride and slipped into the backseat, her nerves tingling as the posh hotel loomed ahead. Stepping out onto the sidewalk, she felt her body shake, like her legs might give way. She took a breath, found her balance, and glided into the lobby's warmth.
Early, she claimed the reserved table in the VIP lounge. Waiting, but not patiently. Her fingers tapped an anxious rhythm on the tabletop. She was nervous, but she kept her calm.
Grabbing her phone, she texted Ella. "Hi Ella... you there? I could use a friend right now."
Ella responded instantly. "Yes, girl... Is everything okay?"
Lilly's thumbs flew across the screen. "Nope. I'm kinda nervous. I have a big client today and I could literally throw up?"
Ella's reply was immediate. "Wait, what... What client? You never said anything..."
Lilly typed quickly. "I'll call you back once I'm done!"
Ella sent one last message. "Sweetheart, I know you've got this... You always do. And you'll nail it."
Just as Lilly started to read the text, a smooth voice interrupted her. "I see you're early."
Her eyes snapped up, wide with surprise. She composed herself, looking up at the owner of the voice. Ethan Scott. Her tongue tied, she stammered.
Ethan, decked out in a luxurious black suit, sat down, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Have you ordered anything?" he asked.
Lilly shook her head, mute.
Ethan summoned a waiter with a flick of his wrist. "Order whatever you'd like," he said.
Lilly's voice finally worked. "I'll have whatever you're having."
Lilly's eyes locked onto Ethan's, her heart doing flips in her chest. She managed a nod, her voice stuck somewhere between her brain and her tongue. Ethan's gaze was unnerving, like he saw right through her carefully constructed calm. The waiter appeared, and Ethan's smile turned polite. "Coffee for two, please. Black."
The silence stretched as the waiter left. Lilly scrambled for words, her mind a jumbled mess. Ethan leaned back, studying her, his expression unreadable. "So, Lilly... tell me about yourself."
Lilly's palms were sweating. She forced a breath, trying to channel the confidence she'd felt earlier. "I'm... resourceful. Discreet. I understand what you need."
Ethan's eyebrow quirked. "Do you?" His tone was low, curious.
Lilly's phone buzzed softly – Ella checking in. She ignored it, focusing on Ethan. "I do. You need someone who blends in, plays the part convincingly."
The coffee arrived. Ethan leaned forward, his voice dropping to a smooth, intimate level. "Convincingly is key."
Lilly's pulse skipped. What was he looking for?
Ethan leaned back, his eyes never leaving hers. "So, Lilly... what do you think I'm looking for?" His voice was low, smooth, like he was playing a game.
Lilly tilted her head, a hint of sass creeping in. "A partner who's not afraid to play along?" She smiled, testing the waters.
Ethan's lips curved, impressed. "Play along... I like that." He leaned forward, his voice dropping. "Tell me something real. What's your deal? Why this... arrangement?"
Lilly's gaze held his. "Opportunities like this don't come often. And I need the money…honestly”
Ethan's eyes narrowed, like he saw more. "Need the money... for someone?"
Lilly nodded, a flicker of vulnerability. "Yeah…for my family. I take care of them. I am the first child”
Ethan's expression shifted, something like empathy flashing. "I'm sorry." He leaned back, studying her. "So you'd do... whatever it takes?"
Lilly's smile was subtle, flirtatious. "Depends on what 'it takes' is, Mr. Scott."
Ethan chuckled low. "Ethan. Call me Ethan." He leaned forward again, his voice intimate. "I think we're gonna get along just fine, Lilly."
Ethan leaned back, his eyes cringling at the corners as he smiled. "So, Lilly... let's talk details. As my... girlfriend, you'll need to play the part convincingly." He pulled out a sleek tablet, swiping through screens. "You'll attend family events, business dinners, maybe a few charity galas."
Lilly nodded, intrigued. "Sounds like a plan. What's the goal?"
Ethan's expression turned serious. "My family's company, P&L Holdings. I'm the heir, but... there's a condition. My grandfather wants me settled, with a 'stable family life'. He thinks it'll make me a better leader." He snorted softly. "Old man doesn't trust me fully yet."
Lilly raised an eyebrow. "And you need me for...?"
Ethan's gaze locked onto hers. "I need you to be my girlfriend. Convincingly. Make my family think I'm... domesticated." He smiled wickedy. "They'll approve the deals, and I'll get what I want."
Lilly tilted her head. "What's in it for me? Besides the money?"
Ethan leaned forward, his voice dropping. "Besides the generous payment... you'll get exposure. Connections. Experience luxury. And... maybe more than just a paycheck, if you play it right." He let the words hang, his eyes sparkling with intent.
Lilly's pulse skipped. "What kind of 'more'?"
Ethan's smile was slow. "Let's discuss that... after you sign the contract." He slid the tablet across the table. "Non-disclosure, standard terms... and a few... extras."
Lilly scanned the contract, her eyes widening at the numbers. "This is... a lot of money." She looked up at Ethan. "What's the catch?"
Ethan's expression turned businesslike. "The catch is... you need to sell the part. Be seen with me. Be... charming." He leaned back. "Can you do that, Lilly?"
Lilly smiled, a spark in her eyes. "I can do charming."
Ethan's smile spread slowly as Lilly agreed. His eyes sparkled with amusement, like he was in on a secret.
"Great," he said, his voice low and smooth. "So, when do I start?" Lilly asked, her voice confident, a hint of playfulness lingering on her lips.
Ethan's expression turned immediate, his gaze flicking to the discreet announcement on his phone. "You start... now." He nodded subtly, his eyes locking onto hers.
Lilly's brow raised, a question in her eyes. Ethan leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Paparazzi are waiting downstairs. We need to make a show."
Lilly's eyes widened slightly. She hadn't known that. Ethan stood, extending a hand, his smile warm and inviting. "Shall we?"
Lilly took it, a spark of electricity jolted through her palm as their skin touched. Ethan pulled her close, his smile morphing into a tender, lover-like gaze. "Lovey-dovey, remember?" he whispered, his breath tickling her ear.
Lilly played along, slipping her hand into his, her fingers intertwining with his naturally. As they walked out of the VIP lounge, she leaned in, brushing a soft kiss on his cheek.
Ethan's eyes flicked to hers, surprised, but he smiled wider, squeezing her hand.
They reached his sleek black car, Ethan opening the door with a flourish. "Get in. We need to make it believable."
In the car, Ethan turned to her, his expression curious. "Why the kiss?"
Lilly grinned mischievously, her eyes sparkling. "You said I had to act convincingly. And that's me acting."
Ethan chuckled, low and smooth, his shoulders shaking with amusement. "You're a natural."
They pulled up to P&L Holdings, a sleek tower gleaming in the sun, the logo emblazoned on the side. Ethan turned to her, his expression turning businesslike. "I'll send you the details. Stay close, okay?"
Lilly nodded, smiling, her eyes locking onto his. They exchanged contacts, and Ethan hopped out, telling his driver to drop Lilly off.
As the car drove away, Ethan's smile lingered, his gaze following the car until it disappeared into traffic.
