Chapter 6: The note remained in Amelia's hand. She read the final sentence again. THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR BIRTH WILL DESTROY YOU. Her fingers trembled. "What does that mean?" Adrian said nothing. He was staring at the note as though he could somehow force the truth out of the ink. "Adrian." Still nothing. She turned toward him. "You know something." His eyes met hers. "Yes." The single word made her heart sink. "What?" He looked at the guards. "Leave us." The guards immediately obeyed. The bedroom door closed. Amelia folded her arms. "Now tell me." Adrian walked toward the window. "Your father was not just my father's friend." "Then what was he?" "He was his business partner." "That's not what you said." "I said he was his closest friend because that's what he was." "You're hiding something." Adrian turned. "Your father and mine built Blackwood Enterprises together." Amelia's eyes widened. "My father helped build this company?" "Yes." "Then why have I never heard his name?" "Because after the betrayal, his name was erased from the company." "What betrayal?" Adrian's expression hardened. "He stole confidential documents." "Why?" "Money." Amelia shook her head. "My father wasn't a thief." "You barely knew him." She flinched. That was true. Her father had disappeared when she was a child. Her mother never spoke about him. She had grown up believing he had simply abandoned them. "Where is he now?" "I don't know." "You're lying." "I'm not." "You know everything about everyone." "I don't know where your father is." Amelia looked away. "Then why did that person mention him?" "Because whoever sent this note knows the past." "What does my birth have to do with it?" Adrian remained silent. Her voice became desperate. "Adrian, please." He looked at her. "There's something I need to verify before I tell you." "Verify what?" "Your identity." She frowned. "What does that mean?" "It means I need to find out whether everything you've been told about your family is true." Amelia felt a chill. "What are you saying?" "Your birth records may have been altered." She stared at him. "No." "Amelia—" "My mother wouldn't lie to me." "I didn't say she did." "Then stop speaking in riddles." Adrian stepped closer. "I will find the truth." "When?" "As soon as possible." "And until then?" "You stay here." She shook her head. "I'm not staying locked inside this house." "You aren't locked inside." "I have guards following me everywhere." "Because someone broke into your room." "I need to see my mother." "You can." "I want to stay with her." "No." Her eyes widened. "No?" "You will not stay anywhere without security." "I am not your prisoner." Adrian's jaw tightened. "I know." "Then stop treating me like one." He looked at her for a long moment. Finally, he said: "Fine." Amelia was surprised. "I can visit my mother?" "Yes." "Without you?" "No." She sighed. "Of course." "I'll take you." "I don't need you to babysit me." "I know." "Then why are you coming?" "Because I want to." There was something in his voice that made her stop arguing. --- Two hours later, Adrian's car stopped outside the hospital. Security surrounded the vehicle. Amelia stepped out. People immediately noticed Adrian. Whispers began. Phones came out. Cameras flashed. Amelia sighed. "I hate this." Adrian stood beside her. "You'll get used to it." "I hope not." He almost smiled. They entered the hospital. Amelia went directly to her mother's room. Her mother smiled when she saw her. "Sweetheart." Amelia hugged her. "I missed you." "I missed you too." Her mother looked past her. Her eyes widened. "Who is that?" Amelia turned. Adrian stood at the doorway. "My..." She paused. She couldn't say husband. Not yet. "My fiancé." Her mother stared at him. Adrian stepped forward. "Mrs. Carter." Her mother's expression changed. For a moment, she looked frightened. Amelia noticed. "Mum?" Her mother quickly smiled. "It's nothing." Adrian didn't say anything. But his eyes had already noticed. He saw the fear. He saw the recognition. And Amelia didn't. --- Later, when Amelia left the room to get water, Adrian remained alone with her mother. Her mother's smile disappeared. "You." Adrian stared at her. "You know who I am." "I know your family." "You knew who Amelia was when I first met her." Her mother looked away. "I don't understand." "Don't lie to me." She became silent. Adrian stepped closer. "Who is Amelia's real father?" Her mother's eyes filled with tears. "You should leave." "Who is he?" "I can't tell you." "Why?" "Because he's dangerous." Adrian's expression changed. "Is he alive?" She didn't answer. "Mrs. Carter." Her hands trembled. "Yes." Adrian's eyes narrowed. "Where?" "I don't know." "You do." "I swear I don't." "Then why are you afraid?" Her mother looked toward the door. "Because if he discovers that Amelia knows the truth..." She stopped. Adrian waited. "He will come for her." Silence. "Why?" Her mother whispered: "Because Amelia isn't just his daughter." Adrian's eyes hardened. "What does that mean?" Before she could answer, the door opened. Amelia returned. Her mother immediately became silent. Adrian turned. "What were you talking about?" "Nothing." Amelia looked between them. "You two were talking." Adrian nodded. "We were." "About what?" "Your treatment." Amelia looked at her mother. "Is that true?" Her mother nodded. "Yes." Amelia wasn't convinced. But she didn't push. Not yet. --- That night, Amelia couldn't sleep. She sat by the window, staring into the darkness. Her father's face was barely a memory. She remembered only fragments. A deep voice. Strong hands. A smile. Then nothing. She wondered if he had ever loved her. If he had ever searched for her. If he had regretted leaving. Her phone rang. Her mother's number. Amelia answered immediately. "Hello?" Her mother's voice was trembling. "Amelia." "Mum?" "Listen carefully." "What happened?" "You cannot trust—" The call suddenly cut off. Amelia's heart jumped. She called back. No answer. She rushed out of her room. "Adrian!" He appeared from the hallway almost immediately. "What happened?" "My mother." "What about her?" "She called me." "What did she say?" "She sounded frightened." Adrian immediately took out his phone. "Security." Within minutes, they were on their way to the hospital. --- When they arrived, chaos had already broken out. Nurses were running through the hallway. Security guards surrounded the room. Amelia pushed through them. "Where is my mother?" Nobody answered. Then she saw the empty bed. Her mother's medical equipment was still running. But she was gone. Amelia's legs nearly gave way. "No." Adrian caught her. "Amelia." "My mother." "We'll find her." "No!" She pushed away from him. "She was here!" "I know." "Someone took her!" Adrian immediately turned to security. "Lock down the hospital." "Yes, sir." "Nobody leaves." Amelia looked around desperately. Then she noticed something on the floor. A small piece of paper. She picked it up. Her blood ran cold. SHE KNEW TOO MUCH. Adrian took the paper. There was another message beneath it. NOW YOU'LL LEARN WHY YOUR FATHER DISAPPEARED. Amelia's eyes filled with tears. "Adrian..." He looked at her. For once, the cold CEO looked genuinely shaken. "We're going to find her." "But what if—" "Don't." "What if she's dead?" His eyes hardened. "She's not." "How do you know?" "Because if they wanted her dead, they wouldn't have taken her." Amelia stared at him. He was right. Someone had kidnapped her mother for a reason. And that reason had something to do with her father. --- Back at the mansion, Adrian gathered his security team. Amelia sat silently in the living room. She was barely holding herself together. Adrian approached. "I've sent people to every location connected to your family." "What about my mother?" "We'll find her." "You keep saying that." "Because I mean it." She looked at him. "Why do you care so much?" He was silent. Then he sat beside her. "Because you're my wife." She looked down. "Contract wife." His eyes hardened. "Don't call yourself that." "Why?" "Because I don't." Her heart skipped. Adrian reached for her hand. She didn't pull away. "I know you didn't choose this marriage because you love me." He paused. "But I need you to understand something." She looked at him. "You're under my protection now." "Adrian—" "I won't let anyone hurt you." His fingers tightened around hers. "Not even if I have to destroy everyone who tries." Amelia stared at him. There was something frightening about the certainty in his voice. But strangely, there was also comfort. She leaned back. "I don't know what to believe anymore." "You don't have to believe everything." "Then what should I believe?" Adrian looked directly into her eyes. "Believe me." Before she could answer, his phone rang. He answered. "Yes?" His expression changed. "What?" Amelia immediately stood. "What happened?" Adrian listened silently. Then he hung up. "Someone found a location." "My mother?" "Yes." "Where?" He looked at Amelia. "An abandoned Blackwood warehouse." Her heart stopped. "Let's go." Adrian shook his head. "No." "I'm coming." "It's dangerous." "She's my mother." "I know." "Then I'm coming." He stared at her. For several seconds, neither moved. Finally, Adrian nodded. "Fine." He reached for her hand. "But you stay beside me." --- The warehouse stood at the edge of the city. Dark. Abandoned. Silent. Adrian's security team surrounded the building. Amelia stood behind him. The doors opened. They entered. Nothing. No movement. No sound. Then— A woman's voice echoed through the darkness. "Amelia." She froze. "Mum?" Adrian grabbed her arm. "Don't move." A light suddenly came on. Amelia gasped. Her mother was sitting in a chair. Alive. But beside her stood a man. Tall. Older. His face was partly hidden by shadows. He slowly stepped forward. Amelia stared at him. Something about his face felt strangely familiar. The man smiled. "Hello, daughter." Amelia's breath stopped. Adrian immediately stepped in front of her. The man's smile widened. "So." He looked at Adrian. "You're the Blackwood heir." Adrian's expression became deadly. "And you're the man I've been looking for." The stranger laughed softly. Then he looked at Amelia. "You really don't remember me?" Amelia couldn't speak. The man stepped closer. "I held you the night you were born." Her entire body went cold. Adrian's hand tightened around hers. The man smiled. "Because I'm your father." And behind him, Amelia's mother began to cry.
