I fling the USB out the open window. The plastic catches the moonlight as it arcs through the air, disappearing into the darkness three stories below. For a moment, everything stiffens. The look of shock on Dupont’s face would be almost comical if not for the rage that follows. His lighter snaps shut with a sharp click. Behind us, James swears, the sound guttural and raw. “Bad choice,” Dupont snarls, the envelope containing Mom’s letters crumpling in his grip. But Alex is already moving. He launches himself at the nearest suited man, creating just enough chaos for me to dart forward. My fingers close around the edge of the envelope, yanking it from Dupont’s grasp. The paper tears—not completely, but enough to make my heart stop. “You little—” Dupont reaches for me, but I’m faster
