“Are we not there yet?”
“It's still furthermore.”
“What?” Sonia stopped to catch her breath, “Is there not like an elevator or something?”
“This building is over a thousand years old, Sonia.”
“It can be refurbished. How come you aren't even tired yet?” She asked.
“I have walked through these stairs so many times, let's just say that I am used to it.”
“Were you around when this building was made?”
“No, not at all.”
“f**k this is exhausting and it seems like my lungs would collapse.”
“Well, you asked to come, let's hurry just in case they have started.”
“Perhaps they might have canceled the meeting and you didn't just get the memo.”
Athene pushed the second door open; the meeting had commenced as a group of Alpha's were already present. Sonia hurried behind him and walked into the hall as everyone went silent watching them. She surveyed the hall with just a glance, they all sat in a row. And there were others that sat way above them which she assumed to be the leaders. The one in the middle looking much younger and vicious and had a different cloak which she presumed was the ruthless Lycan King.
“What's going on? Why are they staring at me like that?”
“It’s okay Sonia just breathe.”
There were murmurs amongst the crowd and she could guess that they were all talking about her.
“Athene you are late.” The older lady sitting at the topmost asked.
“I’m sorry but the traffic was hell.”
“Modern technology wreaks havoc every day. Who do you bring with you?”
“My niece,” he replied.
“Send her away.”
“She would be leaving now.”
“What?” Sonia gasped, but that was not the deal. I came here to watch over you and help with whatever was needed.”
“They are displeased by your presence and you need to go.”
“I can’t go. Why didn't you tell them you are down in health, perhaps they would let you take the day off?”
“No, that is a sign of weakness,” he whispered.
“No uncle,” she moved forward.
“Sonia, where are you going to?”
“My uncle is sick and I am here to assist him,” Sonia announced.
“You are not welcomed here. Leave child.”
“I’m sorry but I can’t,” she said, bowing her head.
“What are you doing Sonia?” Athene asked, terrified.
“Athene be warned the consequences are detrimental.”
“No, please she would leave,” Athene cried out as he struggled with Sonia.
“Pa if I am leaving then I am leaving with you. You are the only family I have left, if being locked away or killed means you would no longer have to come here then so be it.”
“Guards take her out!” The woman screamed. The guards surrounded her as she shut her eyes.
“Wait!”
Everyone froze, it was the voice of the Lycan King, all eyes turned to him situated in the middle of the two other fellows.
“Let her be.”
“What?” Tala gasped.
The murmur in the crowd rose to an uproar.
“Silence! What's your name pretty?”
“Huh? Uhmmm... Sonia. My name is Sonia.”
“Sonia, I am Lucas. It's nice to meet you. You can stay with your uncle and leave when the meeting is over. Everyone, let's welcome Sonia into our meeting,” he said.
“Thank you,” Sonia managed to say but Lucas somehow did not take his eyes off her. Athene began sharing the drinks and brochure they needed for the meeting as Sonia assisted as she had promised.
“Our lord there is a rumor of an upcoming war.”
“My Lord?” Sonia giggled as she mimicked the speaker, “Why do they even refer to him as the Lycan King?” She thought.
“My lord?” the speaker called out again.
Lucas finally took his eyes away from Sonia as he turned to face his subordinate.
“Yes, go on.”
“Are you okay? You seem a bit distracted.”
“Yes, I am very much okay in fact, please proceed.”
Even at that, Sonia would catch his eyes on her but would quickly look away. She slowed down on sharing the drink; she couldn't face the people she handed drinks to as shyness overwhelmed her.
Could he have heard what I said? Or maybe it's my dress. I knew I could have worn something very much better.
“What do you think that we should do?” The speaker asked as he faced Lucas who still had his eyes on Sonia.
“Sire?”
Ralph followed his eyes to Sonia who still passed the drinks around without looking up. And that instant, he noticed Lucas glued attention to her.
“Oh f**k!” he cussed as he left his seat and headed towards Sonia.
“Come here!” he pulled her along.
“Wait what?” She tried to free herself from his grip but to no avail, as they were firm.
“I need to speak to you,” he said.
“Let me go, you are hurting me,” Sonia cried out. The attention of the members was now a bit divided as some still tried to pay mean attention to why they had gathered while some watched as Ralph pulled Sonia out of the hall to a corner.
“Let me be!” He finally let go of her, pinning her to the wall by the corner.
“What is this, Sonia?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean what are you doing here?”
“Last I checked, you were here when I spoke up telling everyone why I had left my job to be here.”
“You need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Sonia, you need to leave, get out of here.”
“And if I leave, would you assist my uncle?”
“Look Sonia, this is his job. Your uncle is a strong man and he would not die because of little chores. He would be fine.”
“Ralph, you don't understand. You should have seen him when he woke up today. He is in a really bad shape and I need to look after him.”
“You see I get it now; I know why you are here.”
“I don't understand.”
“You just couldn't help it, you had to show yourself to every alpha in town, right?”
“What the hell Ralph?”
“Have you seen any of the ladies here? But you always want to be a b***h every time.”
“Ralph, you know that's not why I am here. You know why I am here.”
“Well, I am beginning to doubt that.”
“Ralph, you are making this a big deal.”
“You really don't know what you have walked into.”
With those words, he walked back as the meeting continued. With every gaze Lucas had on Sonia, Ralph got even more furious. In a short while, the meeting was over.
“Pa, we need to get going you know I promised Arya to take the afternoon shift I really don't want to be late.”
“Just a few minutes dear I need to put everything here in place,” Athene said.
Sonia walked back and she settled in one of the seats watching and waiting for Athene as he put things back in place. Then she watched as Ralph walked towards her, she held a smile on her face hoping that he was coming to her perhaps to apologize. She adjusted her dress still with a smile.
