Maya bit her lip, looking all hesitant, and forced out a few tears.
"My parents cut off my money. I've got no money for food. And I heard you guys are making bank with your business...
"Can you bring me in too? I can do anything!"
This girl couldn't even carry a grocery bag without complaining. No way she was serious about joining.
"Didn't you say Miles gave you all his money? How come you're broke?"
She gritted her teeth, all fired up. "He's a total fraud! The second I ran out of cash, he brought some other girl back to our place.
"Right in front of me. Did... you know.
"So I figured I'd work with you guys. Make him regret it!"
That part was true, sure. But Maya had already let Miles smooth things over with a few sweet words.
She was only here for the cash.
Molly, who was ironing clothes nearby, rolled her eyes so hard.
"Weren't you cool with him kissing other girls before?
"Now all of a sudden you've got a problem?"
Maya marched over and stood right behind her, glaring at the back of her head.
"None of your business. If Zoe hadn't asked you to partner up, you wouldn't be where you are today.
"If Zoe and I hadn't had that little falling out, you think it'd be your turn?"
Things were getting heated between them, so I stepped in and pulled Molly behind me.
"We can bring you in.
"But let me set one thing straight. Without Molly, there is no me today. If you wanna stay, you don't get to pull rank on her."
Molly tugged at my hand from behind.
Bringing Maya in was like letting a tumor grow. But this time around, I wasn't gonna go easy on her.
Maya's eyes went wide. She pointed at Molly behind me, totally shook.
"Why should I have to put up with her?
"Zoe, are we besties or what?"
There she went again. Pulling out that same old guilt trip.
"If you can't put up with her, someone else will."
The next second, Maya changed her tune real quick.
"Fine, I'll put up with her. Just let me in on this!"
This time, I wasn't gonna play nice. She'd regret it soon enough.
She said she was gonna work with us, but really she just wanted me to teach her all the tricks. Livestreaming tips, how to grow an account, all of it.
Anyone could see what Maya was really after.
Molly warned me to watch my back. There are plenty of stories out there about students turning on their teachers.
Sure enough, the second Maya learned everything about livestreaming and account management, she was ready to bounce.
"Zoe, I don't think this line of work is for me. Maybe I should just call it quits?"
I pulled out a file she'd signed earlier and laid it out in front of her.
"Sure, you can leave.
"But per the contract, you owe me ten thousand in penalties."
