Fang Liucheng, if you couldn't love me from the very beginning, why give me so many years of dreams only to shatter them in an instant? He had noticed her; against the light, his gaze was inscrutable and deep. Wen Nuan felt a pang in her heart. Ignoring him completely, she intended to head upstairs, but her arm was tightly grasped by Fang Liucheng. “Wen Nuan!” “Let go!” Wen Nuan shivered and shrugged off his hand. She still couldn’t face Fang Liucheng as she normally would. “Young Master Fang, this rundown little place can’t possibly accommodate a figure as grand as you.” “How did you consider my suggestion?” Wen Nuan sneered, “To be your… mistress?” “Do you have a better option?” “Fang Liucheng, you’re ridiculous. When I loved you, you turned me away. Now my father is in prison, and my mother and I are homeless, yet you put on this patronizing facade. It's disgusting. Do you really think Young Master Fang has fallen in love with me?” “Fallen in love with you?” Fang Liucheng smirked with sarcasm, his cold expression becoming even more ruthless. “You’re not worthy.” Though she knew his thoughts and understood his cruelty, Wen Nuan felt wounded by his words. Nevertheless, she forced a smile. She had lost everything to Fang Liucheng and couldn’t afford to lose her self-respect as well. “Young Master Fang, your taste is quite unique. You want to sleep with someone unworthy of you? Not even a dog is worthy; why don’t you go sleep with one?” Wen Nuan retorted sarcastically, not wanting to engage him any further as she turned to leave. Fang Liucheng was furious. Wen Nuan’s nature had always been gentle and soft, like a fresh lily. But after her family fell apart on her twentieth birthday, she seemed to have grown thorns all over her body. Such spiteful and venomous words were not something the old Wen Nuan would have ever said. “Wen Nuan, you have no choice unless you want your father to spend his life in prison.” Wen Nuan’s breath caught, anger surging within her as she swung her hand toward his face. Fang Liucheng held her hand tightly, and she couldn’t break free. With anger in her eyes, he coldly remarked, “Wen Nuan, you’re still more lovable when you’re gentle.” “Let go of my sister!” Wen Jing rushed over, wielding a long stick without hesitation, aiming it at Fang Liucheng. Startled, Wen Nuan watched as Fang Liucheng released her and dodged the stick. Wen Jing’s expression was serious as she raised the stick, pulling Wen Nuan back protectively, like a hen shielding her chick. “Get lost!” Though her younger sister was usually quiet, she had a fierce side. “Wen Nuan, I’ll be waiting for you to come begging me,” Fang Liucheng said before turning and getting into his car, leaving without a backward glance. Wen Nuan felt exhausted; finally able to breathe a sigh of relief, she wondered why she felt so drained, unable to catch a break. In just one day, with Ye Feimo on one side and Fang Liucheng on the other, Wen Nuan felt utterly worn out. “Are you okay, sister?” Wen Nuan shook her head and ruffled her sister's hair. “Where’s Mom?” “She’s sleeping. If she sees Fang Liucheng, it might worsen her condition.” “Mom is sick?” Wen Nuan’s voice became sharp. “She has a high fever,” Wen Jing said. “I’ve bought medicine for her. She said she would be fine after a good sleep.” With everything that happened, anyone could fall ill. Especially someone like their mother, who had never done anything with her hands and had lived a life of luxury for many years. The night was thick like ink, and this area was a poor, old neighborhood with dim lighting. Wen Nuan could no longer hide her sorrow; she slowly bent down, tears flowing through her fingers. “What should I do? Xiao Jing, I feel so useless. I can’t protect you both. I really am useless.” Their father was about to face trial in a few days; the years in prison were unavoidable. The lawyer had already told them that they could only hope for a lighter sentence, but the evidence was undeniable, and there was no chance of appeal. Now their mother was sick, and the three of them were crammed into such a shabby place without any money. With Fang Liucheng constantly pressing down on them, what would happen to their school fees when school resumed after the summer? The weight of life’s burdens, the pain of heartbreak, and the confusion of feeling lost while Fang Liucheng persecuted her—all of this felt like a heavy load pressing down on her frail shoulders, leaving Wen Nuan with no one to confide in. “Sister, I’ve decided to drop out of school.” “No way!” Wen Nuan said sharply, wiping her tears. “I’ll find a way; I won’t let you drop out.” “But, sister…” “This matter is non-negotiable.” Wen Nuan’s eyes held a determination and courage; she was simply facing a setback. She would get through this—she had to. Fang Liucheng, just wait. City A is not just a place where you can have everything your way.
