Alan stayed with Ellie to go over the Extravaganza’s details, with Valerie insisting on staying too to “protect him from temptation”, after it emerged that Ellie had a veritable cauldron of hot chocolate brewing over a temporary stove set up inside the pavilion. ‘Enough,’ she said, ‘for everyone on site to have at least two cups, because it’s a bit chilly out there.’
With nothing to do but wait around, and already feeling a couple of pounds heavier than she had been when she left Bristol, Lucy left her parents to their hot chocolates and discussions and took a walk around the perimeter of the cricket ground.
