Chapter 6: Filth

1390 Words
Three days passed quickly. As agreed, Xu Yunjie was supposed to hand over 700 yuan to Lan Shu, after which they would divorce and part ways. Lan Shu originally thought that, considering how eager Xu Yunjie seemed to get the divorce over with, he would most likely hand over the money by noon and ask her to leave his dormitory. However, to her surprise, it wasn’t until evening that Xu Yunjie finally walked into the room with a grim expression, step by step. “Here, 650 yuan. That’s all I have left,” he said in a hoarse voice. Clearly, the countless times he had asked people for money had worn him out. Lan Shu merely glanced at the money on the table. “We agreed on 700. What’s this? Has the divorce compensation been cut in half?” she said, her voice sweet but biting. Her tone was like a slap to Xu Yunjie’s face, humiliating him to the core. He clenched his teeth, barely able to contain his anger. “Don’t worry,” he spat out, “I promised you, you won’t lose a penny! My family will send the rest tomorrow at noon. In the afternoon, we’ll go to get the divorce!” Xu Yunjie had expected Lan Shu to be sad or upset at the mention of divorce, but instead, she responded without a care, “Fine~” With that, she quickly pocketed the 650 yuan. Xu Yunjie: ? That night, Xu Yunjie couldn’t sleep on the floor, tossing and turning in his discomfort. He had been the one wanting the divorce, but now, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Lan Shu was even more eager than he was to break free. The next day, Xu Yunjie took a day off from work to go to the county bus station to pick up his elder sister. The last missing 50 yuan was borrowed from his sister the previous night after he called her. While 50 yuan wasn’t much, to Xu Yunjie’s elder sister, who had grown up in the countryside and now lived with a rural husband and children, it was far from insignificant. When Xu Yunjie’s sister heard that the 50 yuan would ensure her younger brother could marry a girl from a city official’s family, she argued with her husband, took a beating, but finally sent the money. She was thrilled to see her younger brother after so many years, but soon noticed that the warm, familiar gaze he used to have for her had turned into something distant, like they were strangers... At that moment, Xu Yunjie was troubled by the thought that Lan Shu seemed just as eager to divorce him. Despite coming from a poor family, Xu Yunjie had always felt superior to Lan Shu. This sense of superiority didn’t come just from being a decent-looking university graduate; it came mostly from the fact that Lan Shu had always been infatuated with him. But now, the person who once adored him seemed to no longer care about him. Even though he had been ready to discard the marriage, he didn’t want to be the one cast aside. Lost in these thoughts, Xu Yunjie wasn’t in the mood to catch up with his elder sister. Even when he saw the bruises around her mouth, he didn’t react. He took the money and told her, “I’ll pay you back in a few months.” Without waiting for a response, he turned and left the bus station. Xu Yunjie’s elder sister stood alone, looking at his retreating figure, tears silently falling down her cheeks. Had her brother really become so successful that he was now too good for his family? She couldn’t help but feel like all her efforts for him had been wasted. But what could she do? Xu Yunjie was the only successful one in their family. She could only hope that when her son grew up, he would still need help from his younger brother. She just wished that Xu Yunjie would remember the good things she had done for him today... That afternoon, Lan Shu arrived at the county marriage registration office at the agreed time. Once she had received the final 50 yuan, there was no hesitation as she walked in with Xu Yunjie. Less than ten minutes later, the two emerged, each holding a divorce certificate. Finally, it was done! Without the shackles of marriage, Lan Shu felt a sudden lightness in her heart. Meanwhile, Xu Yunjie, his face long and dark, felt absolutely miserable. The one who had wanted the divorce was him, yet now, seeing Lan Shu’s happiness as she held the divorce certificate, he couldn’t help but feel as if he were the one being abandoned. For a man, there was nothing more unbearable than seeing a woman happily move on after leaving him. Perhaps it was Xu Yunjie’s resentful gaze that made Lan Shu sense something. When she looked up, she met his eyes filled with anger, regret, and a mix of other negative emotions. Lan Shu: ? Wasn’t it he who wanted the divorce? She had agreed to his wishes, yet now he was looking at her as if she was the one who had betrayed him? Xu Yunjie’s expression made Lan Shu uncomfortable, and she couldn’t stand it anymore. “You don’t have to give me that victim look. After all this time, do you really think I haven’t figured it out yet?” Lan Shu sneered, her voice full of hidden meaning. Xu Yunjie’s heart skipped a beat at her words, and he had a sinking feeling that something was off. Then, Lan Shu’s words hit him like a ton of bricks. “Back in the village, you pretended to ‘accidentally’ run into me, always coming around trying to get my attention. You knew your family was poor and couldn’t afford to send you to university, so you targeted our family to get into the door and use our money to fund your education.” “You had it all planned out. You deceived my naive feelings, enjoyed the resources we provided to send you to school, and made your family feel guilty towards you. All the while, you were positioning yourself to abandon those poor relatives.” Lan Shu’s words completely exposed the filthy secrets Xu Yunjie had buried deep inside for years. The shock left him red-faced, unable to look her in the eye. Facing a scumbag like Xu Yunjie, Lan Shu didn’t hold back. “You say you hate that I’m ‘fat,’ but I hate that you have a thousand cunning tricks up your sleeve,” she retorted with a laugh. “I can lose weight if I want to, but your rotten heart will never clean itself.” Lan Shu deliberately flashed a mocking smile at Xu Yunjie, “One thing you’re right about—I’m thrilled that I no longer have anything to do with someone like you.” “And let’s not forget, you were the one who was the live-in son-in-law. Even after our divorce, remember, it’s me who divorced you!” “Don’t show up in front of me again. I’d rather not be disgusted by your presence.” With that, Lan Shu turned her back on him without waiting for a response. Her steps were filled with confidence as she left. The divorce was final, and now, she could move out of Xu Yunjie’s cramped dormitory and start a new, free life. Meanwhile, just outside the mechanical factory, a tractor had pulled up about ten minutes earlier. Lan Dazhuang jumped off the tractor, waved at the security guard, and hurried into the factory. Earlier that day, on his way back from the field, Lan Dazhuang had run into his sister’s eldest brother-in-law. What started as a casual conversation soon revealed that Xu Yunjie was planning to divorce his sister. That news had set Lan Dazhuang’s anger ablaze! Without wasting any time, he jumped in the tractor and rushed to the county. His sister had only been in the county for a month, and Xu Yunjie was already planning to divorce her? Lan Dazhuang wasn’t going to let it slide without consequences. He was determined to teach that scumbag a lesson, even if it meant leaving him bruised and battered.
