CHAPTER 1

Six years later I woke up from a nightmare screaming and tears rolling down my cheek, omg that felt so real. I heard someone knock at my door, oh yeah that was what woke me up. I thought that was part of the dream. "Mabel! Mabel!" Now the person was yelling. "Oh! That is my mum's voice" my brain registered. I quickly flew off the bed running to the door "morning mum" I said while opening the door. "How was your night darling" my mum replied, looking around my room. With the look on my mum's face, I knew something was up, she couldn't even look me in the eye. "Mum, what's going on?" I asked with a concerned look on my face. "Your dad wants to see you in his office, now" she replied me, still not meeting my eye. Well, dear old daddy wants to see me this early morning. A feeling of dread settled in my stomach. "Alright mum, let me freshen up. I will join you downstairs” I told her, while making my way to my bathroom. ****      Thirty minutes later, I was in front of my dad's office, knocking on his door. "Come in" said a voice faintly. I walked into his office and greeted him. "Good morning Mabel, have a seat" he replied with a stern look. Alright then, daddy isn't in a good mood. "You have brought shame to my name, to this family as a whole. What in God's name did you think you were doing, drinking and partying away all my money?" He looked so angry. "Daddy i--" "I am not done talking young woman, till I tell you to speak, you do not speak," Okay, daddy dearest is really pissed. I probably deserve his anger.      "I trained you better than that, I try not to spoil you because you are an only child, I sent you to the school of your choice to study the course of your choice without questioning you. All I needed you to do was graduate school and become a great person. But no, you decided to just break mine and your mother's heart" This time around he yelled with his face turning red with anger. "Now, this is what you are going to do. You are going to work as a personal assistant for one of my friend’s company, maybe then you can learn what it means to be responsible. I have given him permission to send you on any and every errand he deems fit." With the look on his face, he wasn't done talking. "You are to resume next week Monday, as early as 8a.m and you will be debriefed. And out of your salary, you will pay the loan you accumulated on your card without a dime from me." "Is he done talking? Should I interrupt him? Maybe I should just keep mute till he tells me to talk." I thought, with a confused look. Alright let's wing it.     "Look dad, how about I come work for you and  I find a way to clean up my mess?" i said with hope in my voice. "you will do what I said or I and your mother will stop supporting you totally " my mother walks into the office with two cups of coffee. I looked at my mum for confirmation and she looked away. Wow, this is bad, really bad. If my mum is in support, then I really had no way around it. "Okay fine, let's make it probationary. I work for your friend and try to be a better person. Once you see improvements, you start giving me my allowance” I said with my puppy dog eyes. "No!!" My father said, he took my mother's hand and they both walked out of the office. ****        "Oh no, this is really bad Mabel. How are you going to work around it?" Grace said pacing. "Well, there is nothing I can do. All I can do is get my act together. I know my mum can’t stand to see me suffer, plus she knows I have to go back to Los Angeles. So when she starts seeing improvements, she will persuade my dad on my behalf" I said, sighing. So I know i said i wasn't going to ever come back to my hometown, but it took a crying mother and a threatening father to get me to come back. I know I f****d up, but everyone f***s up every now and then. If my dad is this livid about this, what will he do when he find out about the whole truth. "That would be disastrous" I thought, shuddering. "Let's go shopping for your office ware .you need to look so good that people won't be able to turn down doing favours for you. You know, to make your work easy." She said, with a wink and a conniving smile.       We stopped to get pizza on the way back from shopping. While we were eating, we were gisting. "Is that Mabel and Grace?" I heard someone practically yell from across the pizza palace. "Did you hear that?" I asked Grace, while trying to locate the person with the voice. "Is that ---" "Tania?" we said together. Oh no, oh no. Coming back home was a bad idea, I really dread meeting any of my ex-classmates. Tania is the worst of them all, she is the ex that almost ruined my life. Okay I know that is too dramatic, but really. She was Chris's ex. You know, "little miss perfect ".      "Mabel, she is coming over" said Grace. I flinched, coming back from my flash back. Tania reached our table "you guys look good" she said. "Well you don't look too bad yourself" Grace returned back. "Mabel, I thought you left, never to return" she said, with a glint of mischief in her eyes. "Yes, I did and I am back to take over my dad's multi-million dollar company" I replied her without missing a beat. "Tania, how is your fiancé?" Grace said, with hatred in her voice. "He is alright, in fact I came here to pick up our game night meal. I need to get going, I will send my marriage invite to your various houses" she said walking away, swaying her hips. "I hate that girl" Grace said with venom in her voice. "Me too" I replied. Grace hates who I hate. Best friends right? "On a brighter note, you have really sexy outfits you can wear to seduce your way into your office or even seduce your boss" she said with a wink. "Eww Grace, that's my father's friend ya talking about" I said making a disgusting face. We both laughed, finished our food and left.
