Twin betrayal

CHAPTER 3

"Good morning sir" I said to my Boss; Mr Kobe. "This is your coffee" I said, dropping the coffee on his table. "Thanks, my darling" he said without looking up from his screen. "Sir, you have a meeting in 1 hour with a Mr Baker" I said, confused. "Sir, isn't that your partner? " I asked. I could have sworn the name of Mr Kobe's partner is Mr Baker. Granted, I have never seen him but, I have heard people talk about him. "Yes, it is. it isn't an official meeting. I am thinking of retiring and I want to break the news to him" he replied, now looking up from is computer. Oh! Okay, makes more sense now. But my father didn't tell me that is friend was planning to retire. This is a plus for me, I wouldn't be stuck working here for long. Which means, I can return to Los Angeles. This is good, really really good. "Stop smiling Mabel. Even after I retire, I will hand you over to my partner. " Mr Kobe interrupted my thought, with a glint of mischief in his eyes. Oh s**t! "I wasn't thinking about that sir" I replied, with a forced smile. I stepped out of his office to mine.

"Hello, this is Graley transport Ltd. Mabel speaking" I said into the phone. "Mabel!!!" The caller squealed. Okay, that person is definitely Grace. " Grace, why didn't you call my direct line?"  "I wanted to hear you sound official" she replied, laughing. "You are getting the hang of this assistant thing" she said, I could hear the smile in her voice. " what choice do I have? I have to succeed in this." I answered her in a depressing voice. "What are we going to do about Tania's wedding?" Grace inquired. "I thought we already agreed to go?" "We did, the wedding is this weekend. i just wanted to be sure we were still going" Grace is a sweetheart, she puts me first every time. "Thanks---" the second line started ringing. "Hey Grace, I have to get going. We will talk later."  " Bye babe" she said and disconnected.

After picking four calls consecutively on the office lines, my personal phone rang.

"Hi mum! How are you?" I said into the phone.  I really hope she didn't call me at work to bug me. " I am fine, how is your first day at work going?" She asked. I could hear her chewing something. " it has been good so far" I replied her, trying to cover my yawn with a cough. I didn't want her to know I was tired because we were just half way through the day. I intend to power through this punishment without complaint. "Alright, your dad is having a visitor over tonight and he wants you to be present" "Okay, who is the visitor? Is it someone I know?" "Just get home early and you will know ." "Okay mum." "Okay, bye darling.see you soon" she said. Before I could reply, she already hung up.

I just came out of the shower when I heard a knock on my bedroom door. "Mabel, dress well and fast. The visitors are already at the gate" my mother yelled from the other side of the door. I yelled back " yes mummy, i will be down in 5 minutes." I heard her footstep retreat and I proceeded to get dressed.

15 minutes later, I was done and was heading down the stairs. On almost getting to the dining table, I heard various voices. None sounded familiar. So, I walked in.

"My darling" my father said. " Do you remember Toby from your childhood ?" My father asked me, while pointing at one of them. Now paying attention, I looked at the person he was pointing at and I was flooded with memories. Toby was my childhood friend. We used to have play dates all the time, till he disappeared. I asked my parents about him and they said he moved away. "Yes, I remember" I said to my father. I looked across the room to him and he was smiling at me.i waved and smiled back. Now facing his parents, I greeted them. We exchanged pleasantries and we sat down to eat.

When we were almost done eating, my father excused himself and called me to his office. "Close the door behind you" he said, as I walked in behind him. " I want you and Toby to get married" he said, going straight to the point. "What!!" I yelled "keep your voice down" he said, in a calm voice. "Daddy, tell me you don't mean what you just said" I requested, with a pleading look. "That came out wrong, what I really mean is, i want you to give serious relationship a try. You are no longer a baby" he took a pause to drink water. "I want you to give Toby a try at least, he is a decent boy and myself and his dad have been friends for years now" He said. "Dad, if you want me to be friends with Toby again and see where it goes from there, no problem. But marriage is going to far" I replied him, trying to make him understand. "Alright, fine. Just give it your best shot" He said, smiling. " I just want the best for you darling, please don't hate me" with puppy dog eyes, he said. "I do not hate you dad, I love you" I said, i walked over to his side of the table and pecked him. "I love you too baby" he said, and pecked me back.

Now lets get back to our visitors. On getting to the dining room, everyone was done eating.

"Let's excuse them" Toby's mother said to my parents, winking at Toby and i. "I think they have some catching up to do" she said again, while walking away with her husband and my parents, leaving me and Toby alone.
