CHAPTER 4

Amelia “Think clearly? You think I planned for this?” I shouted, frustration boiling over. “You think I wanted to be in this situation? This is your child!” “Is it?” he shot back, his eyes narrowing. “You think I’m the only one you’ve been with? Maybe you should consider all your options before coming here and accusing me.” The accusation hung in the air and I felt my heart shatter. “How can you say that? You know it’s true! We. . .we were together!” Connor stood up abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. “It was a mistake, Amelia. A moment of weakness. I don’t owe you anything. I don’t owe that child anything.” His words cut deeper than any physical pain. I could feel the tears welling in my eyes, blurring my vision. “But I’m not asking for much, Connor! I just… I just thought you’d care. This is your child!” He scoffed, his expression hardening. “Why should I? I’m not responsible for your choices. You need to figure this out on your own.” With each of his dismissive words, my heart felt like it was being crushed. “I can’t believe you,” I whispered, tears spilling down my cheeks. “I’m not your knight in shining armour, Amelia,” he said, his voice cold and unyielding. “Don’t come here expecting me to solve your problems.” I felt completely exposed, vulnerable, and utterly betrayed. I had come here, heart in hand, and he had ripped it apart without a second thought. “You… you don’t care at all,” I managed to choke out. “No,” he said, crossing his arms. “And you shouldn’t have expected me to.” The confrontation had become unbearable, and I felt as though the walls were closing in on me. “I. I need to leave,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper as I turned on my heel, desperate to escape the pain that filled the room. I pushed through the door, stepping into the cool evening air, my breath hitching as I fought back the tears. But just as I turned to walk away, I bumped into someone. Catherine. She stood there, arms crossed, her lips twisted into a smirk that made my stomach turn. “Well, well, look who it is,” she taunted. “Did you have a nice little chat with the Alpha? Did he make you feel special?” “Get out of my way, Catherine,” I snapped, anger boiling over as I tried to push past her. “Oh, I don’t think so,” she said, blocking my path. “You think you can just waltz into his life and have him take care of you? Please. You’re nothing but a dirty secret to him.” “Shut up!” I shouted, my voice breaking. “You don’t know anything!” “I know a lot more than you think,” she sneered. “You think you’re the first girl to fall for his charms? Newsflash, you’re not special. He’ll drop you the second someone better comes along.” The words struck me harder than any blow, and I felt a wave of nausea crash over me. “You don’t understand what I’m going through!” I yelled, tears streaming down my cheeks. “Oh, I understand perfectly,” she said, her tone dripping with condescension. “You’re just a pawn in a game you can’t even comprehend. And now, you’re going to have to deal with the consequences. Good luck with that.” As she pushed past me, I felt as if the ground had dropped from beneath my feet. The realization of my situation crashed down on me, and I stumbled backwards, my breath quickening. Gathering all the strength in me, I stormed out of his house and hailed a cab heading home. ** Connor I stood frozen in the doorway, watching Amelia storm out of my study. There was a part of me that felt an undeniable twinge of guilt gnawing at my insides, a part that questioned my harsh words. But I quickly shoved it aside. I had made my position clear; I wasn’t going to take responsibility for a mistake I’d made in a moment of weakness. It didn't matter if we did it twice, it was still a moment of weakness. She was just another complication I didn’t need, another reminder of a fleeting connection I never intended to deepen. I couldn’t let myself feel sorry for her—not when there were so many other things at stake. As I returned to my chair, I heard the sound of heels clicking against the polished floor, and in walked Catherine, her usual confident strut making my heart race differently. She had a way of lighting up the room, and I couldn’t help but feel drawn to her energy. “Hey there, hotshot,” she purred, leaning against the doorframe. “What was that about? I saw Amelia leave in a hurry. Did you finally tell her how you feel?” “Feel?” I scoffed, rolling my eyes. “She came here with some nonsense about wanting me to take responsibility for a mistake.” Catherine raised an eyebrow, an amused smile playing at her lips. “Oh really? You mean she thought she could just waltz in here and make demands?” “Something like that,” I replied, trying to play it cool. “I told her it was a mistake. She’ll get over it.” She laughed lightly, stepping closer to me, and I felt a rush of heat ignite in my chest. “What a delusional girl,” she said, shaking her head. “Thinking you would just drop everything for her. Does she not know her place?” “Not,” I said, a part of me still wrestling with the image of Amelia’s tear-streaked face. “But she’ll learn. I won’t be her safety net.” Catherine leaned in, her perfume clouding my senses with a sweet scent. “You know, you really should be careful with girls like her,” she said softly, her eyes sparkling mischievously. “You wouldn’t want her to get the wrong idea.” “Right,” I said, trying to dismiss her words, but doubt nagged at my mind. “She’s nothing to me.” Catherine stepped closer, her voice dropping to a sultry whisper. “Nothing, huh? Seems like she’s got you pretty worked up. You know what they say about love-struck fools?” I smirked, trying to mask the rollercoaster of emotions swirling within me. “I’m not a fool, Catherine. I know what I want.” “Then show me,” she said, her lips curling into a challenge. She reached out, her fingers trailing down my chest, sending a jolt through me. I felt the tension in the air shift as her body pressed against mine, her gaze locking onto mine. “Are you sure about this?” I asked, my voice low as I leaned in closer, drawn by the magnetic pull between us. “Absolutely,” she replied, her voice sultry and inviting. Before I could second-guess myself, I closed the distance, capturing her lips with mine. The kiss ignited a flame deep within me, and I felt all the tension from the earlier confrontation slip away as I pulled her closer. Catherine responded eagerly, her hands weaving into my hair, and I couldn’t help but deepen the kiss. My mind momentarily cleared, and I focused solely on her—her warmth, her taste, and the way she fit against me like a perfect puzzle.
