Chapter Five: The Name
I prayed this would be the final chapter of my pain.
For years, I had carried a burden that refused to leave my heart. Every morning I woke up hoping the memories would disappear, but they never did. Every smile I forced, every lie I told, and every tear I cried in silence had brought me to this moment.
I wanted to leave everything behind.
I wanted peace.
I wanted to marry the sweetest man, have beautiful children, and spend the rest of my life protecting them. I wanted a home filled with love instead of fear. I wanted my children to grow up believing the world was kind, never experiencing the darkness that had changed me forever.
Most of all…
I wanted my life back.
Days turned into weeks, and slowly, he began to recover.
The doctors became more hopeful with every passing day. The nurses smiled more often, and little by little, the man who had once believed he would never leave that hospital bed started looking like someone with a second chance at life.
One afternoon, I stood beside his hospital bed and sighed.
“I won’t be coming to visit you anymore,” I said quietly.
He looked at me in surprise.
“Why?”
“Because you still refuse to tell me who sent you.”
The room fell silent.
The only sound between us was the steady beeping of the heart monitor.
After a long pause, he lowered his head.
“I sent the video to my client to let them know the job was done,” he admitted. “After that, I deleted it from every device I had.”
His voice trembled.
“Not a single day has passed without me regretting what I did. Maybe… maybe this is what’s haunting me now. Maybe this illness is my punishment.”
I looked at him without emotion.
His guilt couldn’t erase what had happened.
His apology couldn’t give me back the years I had lost.
Some wounds healed on the outside but continued to bleed within.
Then he looked into my eyes.
“I accepted your love because I wanted to treat you right. I wanted to show you the better side of me. I wanted to become someone different.”
I barely listened.
His words no longer mattered.
“My own request is simple,” I said calmly. “Just tell me who sent you. I have a life to live. I’ve already wasted enough time because of all this. I deserve the truth.”
He stared at me for what felt like forever.
Then he spoke.
“Please… visit me one last time before you leave.”
I hesitated.
Part of me wanted to walk away forever.
But another part knew this might be my final chance to get the answer I had been searching for.
Eventually, I agreed.
The following evening, I returned to his room.
He reached for my hand with trembling fingers.
“Promise me something,” he whispered.
I sighed.
“What now?”
“Promise me… for the sake of what we once shared… that you won’t confront the person behind all this.”
For a brief second…
I almost laughed.
After everything that had happened…
After every sleepless night…
After all the years I had spent pretending…
He still expected me to walk away.
“Fine,” I replied quietly.
“I promise.”
The lie left my mouth as easily as every other lie I had told during our relationship.
He closed his eyes.
A tear slipped down his face.
When he finally spoke, his voice was barely a whisper.
“Her name is…”
He paused.
“…Anna.”
Everything around me froze.
Anna?
No…
That couldn’t be possible.
For what felt like an eternity, I couldn’t move.
Without saying a word, I turned and walked out of the room.
The moment I stepped into the hallway, my legs felt weak.
I leaned against the wall, trying to catch my breath as my heart pounded violently against my chest.
Why Anna?
Out of everyone…
Why her?
She wasn’t just my friend.
She was someone I trusted.
Someone I laughed with.
Someone who knew my dreams.
Someone I would have defended without thinking twice.
Then the memories began flooding back.
The day I asked for her help.
The way she held my hand while I cried.
The concern on her face.
The advice she gave me.
“You should report everything to the authorities,” she had said.
At the time, I believed she truly cared.
I believed she wanted justice for me.
Now…
Every conversation suddenly felt different.
Every smile looked fake.
Every act of kindness became suspicious.
Had our friendship ever been real?
Or had she been pretending all along?
I couldn’t stop asking myself the same question.
What had I ever done to deserve this?
I returned to his room without saying a word.
He looked at me with pleading eyes.
“Please,” he whispered. “Don’t let this destroy the rest of your life.”
I didn’t answer.
Not because I was angry.
But because my thoughts were no longer with him.
They were with Anna.
After graduation, she had returned to her hometown in search of a better future.
Finding her wouldn’t be easy.
But before I confronted anyone…
I needed proof.
Not assumptions.
Not emotions.
The truth.
The whole truth.
Two months later, the doctors discharged him.
He had recovered.
But he was no longer the confident young man everyone admired.
He looked thinner.
Quieter.
Broken.
As I prepared to leave, he smiled sadly.
“I never want to lose you,” he said. “I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to become someone better.”
His words drifted past me like the wind.
I wasn’t listening anymore.
My heart had already moved on.
As I stepped outside the hospital, I looked up at the evening sky and whispered a quiet prayer.
“God… if there are still truths hidden from me, bring them into the light. Give me the wisdom to know what is right and the strength to face whatever comes next.”
The cool breeze brushed against my face.
I stood there for several minutes, unable to move.
The name echoed inside my mind again and again.
Anna.
I whispered it softly, hoping it would somehow stop sounding real.
But it didn’t.
Every memory we had shared came rushing back.
The lectures we attended together.
The lunches we shared.
The secrets we exchanged.
The dreams we spoke about after graduation.
Had every single moment been a lie?
Or had something happened that turned my friend into my enemy?
The questions refused to leave me.
As I slowly walked home, I realized something that sent a chill through my entire body.
For years, I believed the man I was dating was the source of my nightmare.
Now I understood the truth.
He hadn’t been the beginning.
He had only been the weapon.
The real enemy had remained hidden all this time, watching my life fall apart while pretending to be someone I could trust.
I stopped walking and looked up at the darkening sky.
“Lord,” I whispered, “if You’re leading me down this path, don’t leave me halfway. Give me the wisdom to know the truth and the strength not to lose myself while searching for it.”
A cool breeze brushed against my face.
For the first time in years, my search finally had a direction.
Somewhere…
Anna was living her life, believing the past had been buried forever.
She had no idea…
I finally knew where to begin.
As I took one final look at the hospital behind me, I realized that one chapter of my life had finally come to an end. The years of silence, fear, and unanswered questions had led me here, but they would not define the rest of my life.
The truth had finally begun to reveal itself, and although it was more painful than I had imagined, it also gave me something I hadn’t felt in years.
Hope.
Not the hope of revenge.
Not the hope of watching someone suffer.
But the hope that one day, every hidden secret would come into the light, every lie would be exposed, and my heart would finally find the peace it had been searching for.
I took a deep breath and continued walking.
Whatever waited for me in the next chapter of my life…
I was ready to face it.
Because this wasn’t the end of my story.
It was only the beginning of the truth.
End of Chapter Five.
