Chapter 20:Ruan Ruan, Don't Talk Like You Know Everything

741 Words
Morning sunlight hit the campus like it had no idea what kind of world it was stepping into. Lin Xinyi walked the pathway slowly, bag on one shoulder, thoughts still layered from the night before. Not heavy the way they used to be structured now. Like her life had been placed into a pattern she could feel but not yet fully read. "Xinxin!" She turned. Su Ruan was jogging toward her with too much energy for the hour, hair bouncing, already full of something to say. Lin Xinyi exhaled. "Ruan Ruan. It's too early for this level of chaos." Su Ruan stopped in front of her with theatrical flair. "Too early? Your life is already dramatic I'm just providing commentary." "That sentence makes no sense." "It makes complete emotional sense," Su Ruan replied. Then narrowed her eyes. "You didn't sleep again, did you?" "I slept." "That was a lie wearing a polite face." Lin Xinyi adjusted her bag and kept walking. But she didn't move away she let Su Ruan stay close. That was new. She was allowing it rather than pulling distance between them. At the café later, Su Ruan had already ordered for both of them. Without asking. As usual. Lin Xinyi looked at her cup. "You're getting very comfortable." "I'm your emotional support. It's a permanent position." "You appointed yourself." "Best kind of appointment." Su Ruan leaned forward. "Okay, serious question." Lin Xinyi raised a brow. "Those words together worry me." "Who is Gu Yichen to you now?" A brief pause. "Why are you still focused on him?" "Because you keep disappearing into situations and coming back acting like nothing happened." Su Ruan held her gaze. "It's not nothing, Xinxin." Lin Xinyi looked away slightly. "It's not simple to explain." "Xinxin." "Don't call me that in public." "It suits you." Su Ruan tilted her head. "You're thinking about him right now, aren't you." Lin Xinyi didn't answer. Which was an answer. Su Ruan leaned back, watching her. "I don't overthink things. I observe." Lin Xinyi didn't argue. Because that part wasn't wrong. ✦ ✦ ✦ Across the city, a black car entered a private compound without fuss. Gu Yichen stepped out. Everything around him adjusted subtly not dramatically, just the particular shift that spaces make for people they recognize. Inside, his assistant approached. "The hospital report shows continued improvement." "Good." He walked without slowing. "Stable condition is sufficient." "And the university reports?" He paused slightly. Then: "Let them monitor. They're still looking at the surface." ✦ ✦ ✦ Back on campus, Lin Xinyi and Su Ruan were walking again when Su Ruan suddenly slowed. "Xinxin." "What?" "Don't look." "That makes me want to look immediately." "I know. Don't." Lin Xinyi looked. A black car moved slowly near the campus gate. Not stopping. Not obviously watching. Just present for a moment longer than passing required. Then gone. Su Ruan squinted after it. "That's not a student car." Lin Xinyi glanced at her. "You're starting again." "I'm not starting anything," Su Ruan said quickly. "I'm just observing that wealthy people have very specific timing." Lin Xinyi exhaled. But her eyes stayed on the direction the car had disappeared longer than before. That evening in the café, Su Ruan kicked her feet slightly under the chair. "Xinxin." "Hmm." "I like that you still eat normally even when your life is unusual." Lin Xinyi almost smiled. "That's not a compliment." "It is," Su Ruan said, completely serious. "It means you're still you." A pause. Then softer: "I was a little worried you wouldn't be." Silence. Lin Xinyi looked down at her cup. Then quietly: "I feel like I'm becoming something different though." Su Ruan leaned forward at once. "Like what?" Lin Xinyi shook her head. "I don't know yet." Su Ruan studied her for a moment. Then smiled not brightly, not dramatically. Just warmly. "Then I'll stay until you figure it out." Lin Xinyi looked at her. "You're annoying." "I know." A beat. "But I'm still here." Night fell slowly. Lin Xinyi stood at her dorm window again. For once the phone in her hand didn't feel like surveillance. A message appeared. You are adapting. She looked at it. No fear this time. Just the quiet acknowledgement of someone who had stopped pretending to be outside something she had always been inside. Whatever Gu Yichen was building, she was already part of it. And it had started long before she ever noticed.
