Chapter 23:The Name Everyone Knows

785 Words
Lin Xinyi did not sign. Not that day. Not in that room. Not under the gaze of people who spoke in half-sentences and expected her to understand worlds she had never entered. She simply pushed the document back slightly and said, quietly: "I need time." The room went still. Su Ruan nodded with visible relief. "Yes. Finally a normal sentence." Xu Lian chuckled softly. The second man simply watched. But Gu Yichen looked at Lin Xinyi for a long moment. Then gave a single nod. "Three days." Nothing more. No argument, no pressure, no attempt to convince her. Which was somehow more unsettling than any of those things would have been. The ride back to campus was much louder. Mostly because Su Ruan refused to stop talking. "Xinxin." Silence. "Xinxin." More silence. "Lin Xinyi." Lin Xinyi finally turned. "What?" Su Ruan stared at her. "You just sat in a room full of billionaire movie characters and came out looking like we visited a library." "I don't even know what happened." "Neither do I!" Su Ruan threw her hands up. "That's the problem!" They sat in silence for a moment. Then Su Ruan leaned slightly closer. "That Xu Lian person was handsome though." Lin Xinyi turned to look at her. "You got that out of today?" "I'm observant." "You are impossible." The next morning, campus felt different. Lin Xinyi noticed it almost immediately glances that landed a beat too long, conversations that paused just slightly as she passed. People were looking at her in the particular way they do when they've heard something and are checking whether the story matches the person. By lunchtime, even Su Ruan had picked it up. "Okay," she said, setting down her drink. "Everyone is looking at you." "No they're not." "Yes, they are." She pointed discreetly at a nearby table. The students there immediately looked away. "See?" The reason arrived an hour later: a girl from another department, eyes wide, phone gripped tightly. "Lin Xinyi? Do you... know Gu Yichen?" The café went noticeably quieter. Not silent but the kind of quiet where everyone is listening very carefully while pretending not to. Lin Xinyi froze. Su Ruan sat up straight. "Why?" "His car was outside campus this morning," the girl said. "My cousin works in the financial district. He said that's the Gu family's vehicle." Another student leaned in from the nearby table. "The Gu family is one of the Four Families. Like actually one of them." More voices overlapped: "They practically control half the city's infrastructure." "The current heir took over major projects before he was thirty." "Nobody competes with them openly." Each sentence added another layer. Another reason why people reacted when they heard that name. Su Ruan slowly turned toward Lin Xinyi. Then toward the students. Then back. Then back again. Then finally: "Xinxin." "What?" She leaned forward with great drama. "You know one of those people?" "I don't know him." "You were in the same room." "That is not the same thing." "It absolutely is." By evening, campus gossip had traveled far beyond what either of them expected. Nobody knew the truth, but people loved theories. Some said Lin Xinyi was related to the Gu family. Others claimed she was secretly engaged. One rumor had her as a hidden heiress. Su Ruan laughed so hard she nearly spilled her drink. "Hidden heiress?!" Lin Xinyi groaned. "This is somehow your fault." "How?" "I don't know. It just feels like it is." Later that night, Lin Xinyi went to the hospital. The moment she stepped into the ward, everything else fell away. The gossip, the whispers, the Four Families, the contract none of it mattered in here. Her mother's condition had improved again. Not dramatically but visibly. Better color, stronger breathing, clearer eyes. For the first time in months, hope felt like something real rather than something she was only pretending to hold. Lin Xinyi sat beside her and took her hand. Smiled a real one. "You look better today." Her mother looked at her for a long moment. Then, softly, barely above a breath: "Xinyi..." Lin Xinyi froze. Her eyes widened. It wasn't the first sound. But it was the first clear word. Her name spoken the way only one person in the world said it. ✦ ✦ ✦ Outside in the corridor, a man in a dark suit quietly sent a message. Patient recovery continues. A reply came within seconds. Two words only. Continue monitoring. Sender: Gu Yichen. And for the first time since all of this began, Lin Xinyi felt the distance between her world and his becoming smaller. Not because she wanted it to. But because fate seemed entirely unwilling to keep them separate.
