Chapter 2

253 Words
Eva tried to focus on her tasks, but it was impossible. Alexander’s words from earlier — “You’ll need more than brains” — echoed in her mind, making her palms sweat. She straightened the papers on her desk, pretending everything was normal, while secretly counting the minutes until she could escape for lunch. The office doors opened suddenly, and a tall, elegant woman stepped inside. She wore a sharp designer suit, heels that clicked against the polished floor, and a smile that seemed far too confident. Eva froze. She didn’t recognize her, but the woman’s presence made the entire room shift. Heads turned, and even Alexander looked up from his desk, his expression tightening ever so slightly. Eva’s heart skipped. There was something in the woman’s gaze — sharp, calculating, almost predatory. She had no idea who this stranger was, but instinct told her she wasn’t here for friendly conversation. “Alexander,” the woman said, her voice smooth and teasing, “I hope I’m not interrupting anything important.” Alexander’s lips pressed into a thin line. Eva noticed the subtle tension in his jaw, the way his hand tightened on the pen. Something about this stranger seemed to rattle him, and Eva felt a mix of curiosity and unease. She told herself to focus on her work, but she couldn’t ignore it — the day had just gotten a lot more complicated, and Eva had a sinking feeling she was about to be drawn into something far bigger than office tasks.
