Sorrowful Morning

663 Words
At exactly 7:12 a.m., the bright, overly cheerful Samsung ringtone shattered the quiet of Kate’s bedroom. The familiar digital melody light, upbeat, almost optimistic felt painfully out of place. It was a ringtone meant for sweet good mornings and soft “I’m on my way” calls. Not this. The sound echoed against the walls as her phone vibrated stubbornly on the bedside table, inching closer to the edge with every pulse. “Ughh!!! why i haven’t thrown this phone away ” groaned Kate as she removed the blanket on her face . she didn’t need to look at the screen to know who was calling. It had been the same ringtone, at the same time, every morning for the past week. Persistent. Predictable. Almost desperate. A bit hopeful maybe. She stared at the ceiling instead, blinking slowly as if ignoring it would somehow erase everything that had happened. Eventually and reluctantly, she reached for the phone. His name glowed against the screen. For one reckless, humiliating second, her thumb hovered over accept. A foolish part of her still wondered what he would say. Whether regret had finally caught up to him. Whether he would tell her he made a mistake, perhaps he would say it was all a lie , a prank I would never do something to hurt you , but she knew life wasn’t that kind, well atleast to her it has never been. A lone tear fell on her cheeks as she stared at the phone as it continued ringing so bright, hopeful, irritatingly alive. After what felt like an hour of staring , Kate pressed decline. The melody cut off mid-note, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than the sound itself. She let out a slow breath and tossed the phone onto the bed before rolling onto her back again. Nothing had changed the ceiling above her looked exactly the same as it had yesterday. And the day before that, including the ache in her heart it was all the same . Unchanged. In seven days, she was supposed to be walking down the aisle. In seven days, February 14th Valentine’s Day was meant to be her wedding day, romantic isn’t it? Her first time celebrating valentine day’s , despite being in a relationship they had never celebrated valentines before , for her this was a special day. Instead, it has turned to the anniversary of the life she almost had, a dream she once had and hope that had shattered. One week before the wedding, her fiancé had confessed. Not with tears. Not with guilt heavy enough to shake him. Just calm honesty. He had feelings for someone else. And when faced with a choice, he chose her. And to top it out , she was also pregnant for him. That was the part that cut deepest. The phone buzzed again , this time a message. Kate didn’t check it. She didn’t want to read an apology crafted out of convenience. Didn’t want to imagine him typing it while sitting beside the woman who now occupied the future that once belonged to her. Without giving herself time to hesitate, she reached over and held down the power button. The screen slowly faded to black. The room fell completely silent. No ringtone. No vibration. No reminders. Kate stared at the ceiling for a long moment, her chest tight, eyes moist. She closed her eyes and prayed , she sought comfort in the place she felt the safest , in Gods presence . She wasn’t okay. She felt hopeless. She felt the world has turned against her. But she was still here and she knew she won’t let this break her . She had to move , the world won’t stop just because she’s heartbroken , she needs to survive and bring bread on her table . And for now, that would have to be enough to keep her going . continue......... stay Lovely my darlings ❤️
