CHAPTER 14 – The Key That Bleeds

374 Words
The moment the symbol appeared beneath Kehinde’s feet, the wind stopped. Everything stopped. No birds. No leaves rustling. Not even the usual crackling from the clearing’s energy. Ayotunde stood frozen, watching the flame-and-wind key glow beneath him. It was pulsing—like a heartbeat, like a warning. “Kehinde,” she whispered, stepping forward cautiously. “You activated something.” He turned to her slowly, his expression blank. But then—a line of blood slid from his nose. Ayotunde rushed to him, panic rising. “You’re bleeding!” “I’m fine,” he said, but his voice sounded distant, like it was coming from a tunnel. “I see things… all at once. A village burning. A woman screaming. My hands covered in red. My mother…” He winced, gripping his temples. Ayotunde knelt beside him, placing both hands on his face. “Don’t go too deep. Not alone.” The air shimmered around them like heat off asphalt. A presence loomed. Something watching. The forest leaned in. Suddenly, the glowing key beneath Kehinde twisted. Not physically—but energetically. The light changed color—from gold to deep red. And then, a whisper echoed across the clearing: “If the key bleeds, the lock will answer.” Ayotunde’s eyes widened. She turned just in time to see a section of the forest floor split open—not a hole, but a staircase, winding downward into blackness. A wind rose from the hole. Not cold, not hot—just ancient. It smelled like ash and jasmine. Like memory and endings. Kehinde stared into it, his breath hitching. “We buried it… this deep?” “No,” Ayotunde said softly. “It buried itself. Waiting for the key.” Mama Sinmi had once said: “When the door begins to wake, it will call to the one who locked it. Not with voice—but with memory. With love. With pain.” Ayotunde felt all three in her chest. She gripped Kehinde’s hand tightly. “We go together. No more forgetting. No more leaving.” He nodded, tears in his eyes. “Together.” They stepped onto the first stair. Behind them, the clearing sealed itself shut. Ahead of them, the truth waited.
