The Reckoning

The Siberian night was cold enough to freeze the blood in Xander's veins. He stood at the edge of the base, watching the soldiers he'd freed stumble through the snow. The counter-signal had worked. The Omega Protocol was neutralized, its hold broken. But the cost had been high. Dozens of soldiers lay dead in the snow, their bodies broken by the battle. Reynolds appeared at his side, his face pale. "We need to move. The Russians will be here soon." "Not yet." Xander's voice was quiet. "We need to make sure the survivors are safe." "The survivors are being loaded onto the trucks. Elena's network is already on its way." "Then we wait." Xander's voice was hard. "We wait until the last truck leaves. Then we go." --- The survivors were taken to a new safehouse, hidden deep in the Ural Mountains. Xander walked through the crowded rooms, checking on the soldiers. They were recovering, slowly but surely. The programming was fading, their minds beginning to heal. But there were still so many of them, so many who needed help. Anya was at his side, her face tired but determined. "We did it. We neutralized the Omega Protocol." "For now." Xander's voice was quiet. "But Volkov is still out there. And he's planning something else." "How do you know?" "Because he told me. In the message he sent. He said he was building something even more powerful." Anya was silent for a long moment. "Then we need to find him. We need to stop him before he can finish it." "I know. But first, we need to rest. We need to recover. We can't fight if we're exhausted." Anya nodded slowly. "You're right. We need to take a breath." --- The days passed, and the soldiers began to heal. Xander spent his time in the main room, studying the files Thorne had left behind. There was so much information, so many details about Volkov's plans. But there was also a gap—a missing piece that Thorne had never been able to find. "Volkov's weakness," Xander said. "Thorne mentioned it in his message. But he never said what it was." "Maybe he didn't know," Anya said. "Maybe he was still trying to find it." "Or maybe it's hidden somewhere else. Somewhere we haven't looked." --- The search took weeks. Xander worked through the files, looking for any clue, any hint of Volkov's weakness. Anya was at his side, her eyes scanning the data. The others helped when they could, but most of the work fell to them. And then Anya found it. "Here," she said. "In Thorne's personal files. A reference to a woman. Someone named Natalia." "Who is she?" "Volkov's wife. She died years ago, before he started the project. But Thorne says she was the key. She was the one person who could control him." Xander stared at the screen. "She's dead. How can she help us?" "She can't. But her daughter can." Anya's voice was hard. "Katerina. Volkov's daughter. She's the one person who can stop him." "Katerina? She's working for him. She betrayed us." "I know. But she's also the only one who knows his weaknesses. The only one who can get close to him." Xander was silent for a long moment. "We need to find her. We need to convince her to help us." "How? She's working for Volkov. She'll never betray him." "Then we make her." Xander's voice was hard. "We find a way." --- Katerina was being held in a secure facility, guarded around the clock. Xander stood outside her cell, his face grim. The others were behind him—Reynolds, Davis, Thompson, Anya. They'd all come, all chosen to face her. "You sure about this?" Reynolds asked. "She's dangerous. She's already betrayed us once." "I know." Xander's voice was quiet. "But she's also our only chance." He opened the door and stepped inside. Katerina was sitting on the cot, her face pale, her eyes distant. She looked up when he entered, her expression cold. "Cross. I was wondering when you'd come." "I need your help." "My help?" Katerina laughed, a bitter sound. "Why would I help you? You're my enemy. You're trying to destroy my father." "Your father is trying to destroy the world. He's building something terrible. Something that will kill millions." "Then let him." Her voice was hard. "I don't care about the world. I only care about my father." Xander was silent for a long moment. Then he pulled out a photograph and held it up. It was a picture of Katerina's mother, Natalia. Katerina's face went pale. "Where did you get that?" "From Thorne's files. He knew your mother. He knew what she meant to your father." Katerina stared at the photograph, her eyes wet. "She was the only person who could control him. The only one he ever loved." "I know. And I know you loved her too. You loved her more than anything." Katerina was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "Yes. I loved her. And I miss her every day." "Then help me stop your father. Help me save the world. For her." Katerina looked at him, her eyes filled with tears. "How do I know I can trust you?" "Because I'm the only one who can save him." Xander's voice was hard. "If you help me, I'll do everything I can to save your father. I'll give him a chance to surrender. I'll make sure he gets the help he needs." Katerina was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "Okay," she said. "I'll help you." --- The plan took shape over the next few days. Katerina knew her father's weaknesses. She knew his hiding places, his security protocols, his contingency plans. She knew how to get close to him. "There's a facility in the Arctic," she said. "That's where he's building the new weapon. He's been working on it for years, ever since the Omega Protocol was destroyed." "We destroyed the Omega Protocol," Xander said. "The counter-signal neutralized it." "That was just a test. The real weapon is something else entirely. Something more powerful than anything we've ever seen." "What is it?" "I don't know. He never told me. But I know it's almost ready." "Then we need to stop him before he can deploy it." Katerina nodded slowly. "I can get you inside. I know the security protocols. I know the weaknesses." "Then we go. Tonight." --- The Arctic facility was hidden in a valley, surrounded by ice and snow. Xander moved through the darkness, his weapon ready. The others were behind him—Reynolds, Davis, Thompson, Anya. Katerina was at his side, her face pale, her eyes determined. "This is it," she said. "The entrance is ahead." Xander moved forward, his heart pounding. The guards were everywhere, their weapons ready. But Katerina knew the way around them, the secret paths that only she knew. They reached the main control room without being detected. Xander moved to the console, his heart pounding. "Anya. Can you find the weapon?" Anya moved to the console, her hands flying across the keyboard. "There's a file here. The Omega Protocol. But it's different. It's been modified." "Modified how?" "I don't know. But it's more powerful than anything we've seen before." The doors slammed open, and guards poured into the room. Xander moved to the front, his weapon blazing. "Anya! Get the file! Now!" "I'm trying! Just give me a few minutes!" "We don't have a few minutes!" The battle was brutal, chaotic. Xander moved through the chaos, his weapon blazing. He took down one guard, then another. But there were too many. And then Volkov appeared. His face was cold, his eyes blazing with fury. He was holding a weapon, aimed directly at Xander. "Sergeant Cross. I was hoping you'd come." Xander raised his weapon. "It's over, Volkov. We're going to destroy your weapon and stop you once and for all." "You can try." Volkov pressed a button on his console. The facility began to shake, explosions rocking the foundation. "The self-destruct," Katerina shouted. "He's destroying the facility!" "Get everyone out!" Xander shouted. "Now!" He dragged Volkov toward the exit, his grip tight. The facility was collapsing around them, debris raining down from the ceiling. They burst out of the facility just as it exploded. Xander was thrown to the ground, his body battered. Volkov was beside him, his face pale, his eyes closed. "It's over," Xander said. "It's finally over." He looked up at the sky, the stars bright overhead. The war was over. The Omega Protocol was gone. And Xander was finally free.
