The attack came at dawn.
Xander was in the garden when the first explosion rocked the safehouse. He dove for cover, his hand reaching for his weapon. The building was burning, flames leaping from the shattered windows.
"Cross!" Reynolds shouted. "They're here!"
Xander moved through the chaos, his weapon blazing. Figures in black tactical gear swarmed the compound, their movements fluid and precise. They were professionals, trained killers.
But they were also familiar. Xander had seen this before. In the Urals. In Siberia. In the Arctic.
Volkov's legacy.
He found Anya in the main room, her face pale, her hands shaking. "They came out of nowhere. There must be dozens of them."
"Get to the basement," Xander said. "Now!"
She ran, and he turned to face the attackers. The battle was brutal, chaotic. He took down one, then another. But there were too many.
And then they retreated as suddenly as they'd come.
Xander stood in the wreckage, his chest heaving. The safehouse was destroyed. The supplies were gone. But they were alive.
Reynolds appeared at his side, his face grim. "We need to move. They'll be back."
"Not yet." Xander's voice was hard. "We need to find out who sent them."
---
The survivors gathered in the forest.
Xander sat on a fallen log, his face pale, his eyes hollow. The others were scattered around him, their faces drawn with exhaustion.
"Katerina," he said. "Where is she?"
"She's gone," Davis said. "She disappeared during the attack."
Xander's blood ran cold. "She betrayed us again."
"Are you sure?" Anya asked. "Maybe she was taken."
"I'm sure." Xander's voice was hard. "She was the only one who knew about this safehouse. She led them here."
Reynolds stepped forward. "Then we find her. We find out what she's planning."
---
The search took weeks.
Xander worked through his contacts, reaching out to everyone he knew. Journalists, former military, people who'd been affected by the Ghost Protocol. Most of them came up empty. But one of them—a former intelligence officer named Viktor—had a lead.
"There's a woman," Viktor said. "She's been gathering Volkov's followers, building a new organization. She's calling it the Legacy."
"The Legacy?"
"She believes in Volkov's vision. She wants to continue his work."
"Who is she?"
"I don't have a name. But I have a location. A facility in the Caucasus Mountains. It's where she's based."
Xander's heart pounded. "Then that's where we're going."
---
The Caucasus Mountains were treacherous, the paths narrow and winding.
Xander drove through the night, his eyes fixed on the road. The others were with him—Reynolds, Davis, Thompson, Anya. They'd all come, all chosen to fight.
The facility was hidden in a valley, a cluster of buildings surrounded by cliffs. Xander moved through the darkness, his weapon ready.
"This is it," he said. "The Legacy's base."
"Then we go in."
---
The facility was massive, built into the side of the mountain.
Xander moved through the corridors, his weapon ready. The guards were everywhere, their faces blank, their movements mechanical. They were programmed, just like the soldiers they'd freed.
And then he found her.
Katerina was in the main control room, her face cold, her eyes blazing. She was standing at a console, her hands flying across the keyboard.
"Katerina." Xander's voice was hard. "It's over."
She turned to him, her smile cold. "Cross. I was wondering when you'd come."
"You betrayed us. You led them to the safehouse."
"I did what I had to do." Her voice was hard. "My father's vision must continue. The Legacy will carry on his work."
"Your father was a monster. He destroyed thousands of lives."
"He was a visionary." Katerina's voice was fierce. "He was building a better world. And I'm going to finish what he started."
Xander raised his weapon. "I'm going to stop you."
"You can try." She pressed a button on her console. The facility began to shake, explosions rocking the foundation.
"The self-destruct," Anya shouted. "She's destroying the facility!"
"Get everyone out!" Xander shouted. "Now!"
He lunged for Katerina, grabbing her wrist. She struggled, but he was too strong. He dragged her toward the exit, his grip tight.
"You're not going to escape," he said. "You're going to pay for what you've done."
The facility exploded behind them.
---
They emerged into the night, gasping for breath.
The facility was burning, the flames consuming everything. Xander dropped to his knees, his body screaming. He'd done it. He'd stopped her.
But Katerina was still alive. She was in the back of the truck, her hands bound, her face pale.
"You're going to prison," Xander said. "You're going to spend the rest of your life paying for what you've done."
Katerina laughed, a bitter sound. "You think prison will stop me? You think you've won? The Legacy is everywhere. My father's vision will never die."
"Maybe not. But I'm going to spend the rest of my life making sure it never comes to pass."
---
The weeks passed, and they began to rebuild.
The network expanded, providing resources and support. The soldiers were recovering, their minds slowly healing. But there was still so much work to be done.
Xander sat on the porch of the new safehouse, staring out at the mountains. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and red.
Anya appeared at his side, her hand in his. "You're thinking too much."
"I always think too much."
"Then stop." She leaned against him. "Just for a moment. Just be here."
Xander was silent for a long moment. Then he turned to her, his eyes soft.
"I love you," he said. "I've always loved you."
Anya looked at him, her eyes wet. "I love you too. I've always loved you."
They sat in silence, watching the sun set over the mountains.
The war wasn't over. It would never be over. But they had each other.
That was enough.
---
The message came on a Tuesday.
Xander was in the garden, tending to the vegetables, when his phone buzzed. He pulled it out, his heart pounding.
The message was from an unknown number.
You think you've won, Cross? You think the Legacy is defeated? Katerina was just the beginning. There are others out there, people who believe in Volkov's vision. They're coming for you.
Prepare yourself. The war isn't over. It's just beginning.
Xander stared at the message.
The war wasn't over. It was just beginning.
And he was ready to fight.
