Uncle Kyle.
Kyle scoffed and turned back to me with a serious look.
“Don’t call me uncle Serene. I might be your father’s friend, but that doesn’t mean I am old. I am just forty-one…”
I froze instantly, staring at the man with complete shock written all over my face. My hands shook slightly against the bed sheet as I swallowed hard.
“So what would I be doing? I am not permitted to leave here, to even hold my phone or see my father’s grave at least…”
Kyle’s face darkened.
He narrowed his eyes toward me as he moved closer to the bed.
I quickly shifted backward, clutching the pillow tightly against myself as my heart pounded heavily against my chest.
He paused midway before a faint smile slowly appeared on his hardened face.
“Your phone… I will get you a new one, Serene. And for your freedom…” he paused briefly, “I can’t let you roam around. I have plans of getting someone to follow you, which I already arranged for. He should be here any moment from now…”
The doorbell suddenly rang.
Kyle paused midway, turned slowly, and left the room.
I swallowed heavily as I glanced around the room.
It suddenly felt too empty.
The only living thing there was the television noise and the people moving far outside the window.
Soon, the door flew open again and I looked up immediately.
My eyes landed on a young guy standing by the entrance.
Extremely handsome.
His dark hair fell slightly over his face while his expression remained calm and unreadable.
Tall.
Athletic body.
Sharp jawline.
And strangely quiet eyes.
Kyle walked toward me while the young man followed silently behind him.
“This is Fred,” Kyle said calmly. “He is—or should I say—he will be your bodyguard. He is highly qualified for the job.”
He turned toward Fred slowly.
Fred kept his gaze calm as he looked at Kyle silently.
“And this…” Kyle continued, turning back toward me, “is my pet, Serene.”
I scoffed immediately after hearing that disgusting name he always used just to irritate me.
“You only have one job, Fred,” Kyle continued in a darker tone. “Anywhere she wants to go, under my approval, follow her and bring her back safely.”
Kyle’s voice echoed heavily through the room.
“So what if I decide to work and make the money to pay you back? Would I leave?”
Kyle stopped midway without turning immediately.
A few seconds later, he slowly glanced back at me.
“And how exactly do you plan to do that?” he asked calmly. “Work where? To pay five hundred and ninety-nine million dollars?”
His gaze hardened briefly before he turned and left angrily without another word.
Fred stood there silently for a moment before turning toward the door too.
“I want to go somewhere. Tell your master for approval.”
Fred stopped with his hand on the door handle and slowly turned toward me.
“May I know where to?”
“I am in high school, Fred!!” I snapped. “Or do you want me to drop off? Tell him that or whatever…”
I turned back toward the bed while Fred stood there for a few seconds before turning again to leave.
“And!”
My voice suddenly stopped him again.
“This afternoon, I need to go to the beach. You can tag along if you feel safe enough to watch ladies dress hot.”
Fred froze midway as his eyes widened slightly…
If only that could stop him from hanging behind while I went on with the things I really had in mind.
Kyle had made it fully clear that I would always go out with Fred and that he wouldn’t let me even see the grave of the man he claimed was dead. And within myself, I thought the only way to do that was through this.
Fred’s eyes were still widened like a lost puppy after my last statement. He didn’t say anything more as he turned quickly and left the room.
I breathed in heavily.
“Maybe I have finally thrown this puppy off the way for now,” I said aloud as I pulled on my jumper and quietly opened the door.
I was halfway toward the glass door when a voice stopped me from behind.
That heavy and dark voice I had always heard right from when I was ten.
“Pet, remember the agreement. Fred said you wished to go to the beach, and I have already instructed him on things to do…”
He paused as I quickly turned and fixed my gaze on him.
His eyes darkened slowly as he continued.
“You wish to be at the beach, pet? Fred would follow you, and that’s the only place you would be today. And I only gave him one hour, then you come back here.”
“I am not your prisoner, Uncle Kyle.”
Kyle lowered his lashes toward me. His gaze slowly dropped to my tiny hips, and I caught his eyes lingering there for a moment before he forced out a tiny, wicked smile.
“I never said you were, pet. But this is my house, and my rules stand. You are fully my property, pet.”
