Pretending (Sara’s POV)

465 Words
I hide under the covers thinking of everything that was wrong with me and wondering what flaws Tony found were so bad that he wanted to break-up with me. The blankets became suffocating and I pushed them off. Jumping up, I scrutinized every single item of my body. Was my nose too big? Maybe, my mouth was too small. It’s not like Tony ever tried to kiss it. Maybe, I should try som lipstick and more makeup like Leslie did. The boys seemed to go for that. Then there was my hair. I debated up or down. Should I put it into a ponytail or go with waves? What outfit? I rummaged through the closet. It had to be nice. A dress possibly or jeans and a really cute shirt? What would catch his attention? Uggghhh!!! A stack of clothes later and no ideas, I fell backward onto the bed. Next thing, I knew. I was going to be late to school and any thoughts of dressing up went to the wayside in the rush. Walking out the door knowing I looked worse than usual severely dampened my self-esteem. Worse, I didn’t know how to face him after what I overheard. What would I say if I saw him? My plan was to tell him off for being such a jerk. Then yell at Leslie for all her horribleness. But the truth was that I could do none of those things. At heart, I was a coward. I was scared. Scared of telling them off, scared of speaking my mind and scared of how they would react when I told them. It was so unfair. If so could borrow just a teeny bit of the confidence that Leslie had, I might be able to do it. Instead here,I was trying to avoid running into either one of them. I had nearly succeeded until Tony caught me in the hallway. My pulse rate jumped and I waited to hear what he had to say. Instead of telling him off and saving myself some pain on Graduation day, I found myself saying yes to another date and wondering what the hell I was doing. Perhaps, this was the opportunity to change his mind. I would have time now to do all the things that I intended to do this morning. Showered and shaved, I put on a cute summer dress that would show-off my curves. As I looked in the mirror, I hoped I was tempting enough to elicit at least a kiss from him and just maybe do enough to keep him. If that happens, I knew I would be able to throw it into Leslie’s face. The thought delighted me as I wished downstairs waiting for my Prince Charming to arrive in his Jeep chariot.
