Our last date, Tony hardly paid any attention to me. I knew he was just going to do it. What should have been a happy day was marred by the anticipation of what he was going to say sand how I was going to react.
What if he broke up with me in front of the entire class? I wasn’t sure I could live with the humiliation if he did that.
Still I had to go and line up with everyone else waiting for the moment we walked across the stage. I plastered on a fake smile and walked down the stage as they called my name.
The rest of graduation was a blur of congratulations and pictures. A quick change of clothes and I was headed to the party by the waterfall. I did want to skip it but it was the party of the year.
Tony hadn’t said a word during graduation. At least., he didn’t break up with me in front of the school. As relieved as I was about that, there was still the party.
There were fairy lights strung all around. Music played in the backyard. Booze flowed freely without the interference of parents. Already a few were stumbling around drunk.
I made my way to the edge of the waterfall saying a few words here and there. I wanted to see the water in all its moonlight glory.
I stood there just staring knowing things were ending. I turned as I heard Tony behind me asking if we could talk.
The moment I was dreading was upon me. The words I didn’t want to hear falling from his lips.
“I am breaking up with you,” he said .
“Why?” I asked. I wanted to know.
“I just ask you out because my Dad approved you,,” he said.
“Did you even love me at all?” I wanted to know.
“I mean, I guess I did like you. But, no. I don’t love you.”
I hated him in that moment. Hated that he said pretty words and lied to me. Hated that I had been used simply because his father approved of me.
“I HATE YOU, TONY!l I yelled at him. “Just go away,” I cried as tears ran down my face. I turned my back on him facing the waterfall once again.
“NOW!!!” I heard someone yell before I went flying off the edge of the cliff.
