episode 14:The Night Between Life and Goodbye

563 Words
Christmas Eve felt unusually quiet inside the clinic. Outside, joy filled the air. Fireworks popped in the distance. Children laughed as they held new toys. Church bells rang softly, calling people to celebrate the birth of hope. Inside the small white room, hope was struggling to breathe. Elija lay still, his chest rising slowly, unevenly. The machines beside him beeped steadily, but each sound felt like a question mark. Mirabel sat close, holding his hand tightly, afraid that if she let go, he might slip away forever. “I should have listened,” she whispered. “I should have loved you the way you loved me.” Her tears dropped onto his hand, warm against his cold skin. Elija’s mother arrived just before midnight. Her eyes were red from crying, but her steps were firm. When she saw her son lying there, she covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming. “My child,” she whispered, touching his face gently. Mirabel stood up slowly. “Mama… I’m sorry.” Elija’s mother looked at her for a long moment. There was pain in her eyes, but also wisdom. “What is done is done,” she said softly. “Let us pray.” They held hands—mother, girlfriend, and a broken young man lying between them. As they prayed, Elija’s body suddenly shook. The monitor alarm rang louder. “Nurse!” Mirabel shouted in fear. Doctors rushed in. They worked quickly, pushing Mirabel and Elija’s mother aside. “Cardiac distress,” one doctor said. Mirabel’s legs weakened. She held onto the wall as tears streamed down her face. “This is my punishment,” she whispered. “Please, God… take me instead.” Inside his mind, Elija stood alone. He was on a long road. At one end, his village waited—simple, quiet, peaceful. At the other end, bright city lights flashed loudly, calling his name. He took a step toward the lights. Then he heard a voice. “Elija.” His mother’s voice. He turned. She stood under the mango tree, smiling softly. “Come home,” she said. His heart trembled. Back in the clinic, the doctors stopped. The room fell silent. Mirabel covered her mouth, choking on her cry. Then— A soft beep. Then another. “Elija’s stable,” the doctor said. “For now.” Mirabel fell to her knees, crying loudly. “Thank you, God. Thank you.” Elija’s mother closed her eyes and whispered a prayer of gratitude. Later that night, when the clinic became quiet again, Elija slowly opened his eyes. “Mama,” he whispered. His mother rushed to his side. “I’m here, my son.” Mirabel leaned closer, her face filled with fear and hope. “I’m tired,” Elija said weakly. “So tired.” “You will rest,” his mother said gently. “You will live.” Elija looked at Mirabel. “I didn’t want to die hating you,” he whispered. “I loved you… even when it hurt.” Mirabel cried uncontrollably. “I didn’t deserve you.” Elija managed a faint smile. “Love doesn’t always choose who deserves it.” Outside, Christmas lights blinked endlessly. Somewhere, people celebrated new beginnings. Inside that clinic room, three hearts waited— not knowing whether Christmas would bring a miracle… or a goodbye delayed. To be continued…
