chapter 5

After I finished cleaning up the kitchen I wrapped up four of the grilled cheeses in the refrigerator. I headed to sit down at the table with Jason.

"Hey, are you finished cleaning so we can get start with my assignments?"Jason asked.

"Umm..yeah we can get started on your assignments," I said anxiously as I looked at the clock turning to 4:10 pm.

"Hey, are you okay?"Jason asked while getting his assignment out.

"Huh?! oh, yeah I'm fine I'm just...yeah I'm fine," I said.

"You seem...off more than usual," Jason said.

"Oh well, I'm good. Let's go ahead and get started on the assignments," I said.

"Alright, so this assignment I have to read an article on magic creatures and then write an essay on it," Jason said.

"Alright so did you go ahead and read the article or did you just skim it?" I asked looking at the paper.

"I didn't even read it because I didn't understand what half of the sentences was saying about the creatures. I mean who writes about the magical creatures and yet puts it in sentences that some of us don't understand. sometimes I wish people would make articles that the students actually enjoy."Jason said.

"Well you could always talk to the principal about the course load work they put out to us if you are really annoyed by it, "I suggested." you can also join the newspaper club and write articles that make sense for people you claim that don't understand it.

"Yeah you know what I think I might just do that," he said smiling.

"Alright cool, so, now can we finish?" I asked.

"Yeah I guess so," Jason said grinning.

"Alright, so first things first, you have to read the articles, then tomorrow at the same time, we will write the essay together. Feel free to make notes. I actually recommend that you do that if you want to better understand the assignments. Take notes off the story and then tomorrow we will use them to make the essay. When is this due?" I asked.

"Umm..it is due.....I think next week" Jason said confused.

"Alright so ask your teacher when is it due so you can get it done on time for a good grade. If it is past due just ask for an extension," I said.

"Oh okay, so at 3:30 pm tomorrow...umm yeah I can do that, at your house right?"Jason asked.

"Yup," I said.

"Oh alright, well thank you so far with the help, tonight I will read the stories and take notes," Jason said while gathering up his things.

"Yeah, no problem that is what tutors are for," I said smiling.

Jason puts away all the assignments, papers, books, and pencils he used in his bookbag. He stares at me for a moment and looks away.

"You know you are not so bad...Shyne," he says getting his coat.

"You aren't either but I do have a question for you, I have been wanting to ask you for some time now but you seemed busy, why did you stop being friends with me?" I asked walking him to the door.

It took him a few moments to answer me." well...people were always making fun of you because of your lack of powers and your ears aren't pointy like the rest of us. I just didn't want to get made fun of as well, so I just stop talking to you because I thought that will be better for me. I'm sorry Shyne that I did that to you. I know now that didn't deserve that disrespect from me."Jason said.

Jason put his hand on my shoulder.

"Hey, you are a cool person Shyne but I still want to keep this a secret," Jason said grinning.

"Umm...alright," I said pushing his hand off my shoulder.

"See you tomorrow," Jason said.

"See you tomorrow," I said.

He walks out of the house with his belonging and I saw him take some of the snacks. As soon as I closed the door, I took a deep breath and started to panic again. I couldn't hold in the confusion and nerves. I started to walk around breathing heavily. I collapsed to the floor and started to cry. Every bad thought in my mind came to me and made me sadder. I started to feel the light rise from inside of me. I pushed past the feeling of stopping and just let it go. I lifted my head and I saw things in the house float. The couch and chairs were floating in the air. I started to look shocked but then I realized this was what happened last time. When I had gotten upset or stressed out. In middle school, it was recess and I was talking to Lira and reading the newspaper. I read the section where it was talking about gangs and violence. For some reason, that kind of stuff seemed to make me entertained. When some kids named Luke, brook, and Jake were playing and decided to walk up to me.

"Hey HUMAN!! what are you reading??" Luke asked coldly.

"Umm...the newspaper," I said.

The kid snatched it out of my hands.

"Well, it looks like the HUMAN can read elf but yet isn't one," Luke laughed.

"Hey stop, give it back to him, he did nothing to you!" Lira said.

"Lira don't it will just make it worst," I said.

"Hey!! he wasn't talking to you!!" Jake said to Lira.

"No, not this time, you will not bully other kids because they are different from you!!" Lira said loudly.

"Lira...just come on let's go....maybe they want to read the newspaper even though they might not know how to read it themselves," I said lowering my voice reaching out the grab lira's hand.

"Hey, what did you say?"Luke asked.

"He said you can't read elf language, so get lost losers!!" Lira yelled.

Luke's face started to get red. then I saw his head start to go in flames. Lira tried to back up but the other kid grabbed her.

"Hey let me go loser!!" Lira cried, struggling to get loose from Jake's grasp.

"Ha you who's the loser now, you will not talk to the boss like that! besides, you would be with your own kind," Jake said.

"You are dead you little human!!" Luke said storming toward me with speed.

I had gotten up from my spot to run but then I heard Lira yelling and struggling. Suddenly something stirred inside of me. I was feeling infuriated by what was happening. I started to walk toward Jake holding Lira.

"Let her go!!" I yelled, gritting my teeth.

Jake smiled and laughed"I don't think so HUMAN! she deserves better," Jake said.

Brook and his other friends started to walk away seeing Luke coming toward me spraying fire out of his hands.

"Come here Human! unless you're a coward!! HAHA!!" Luke said laughing.

"I...am...not...a....human!!" I yelled.

I felt something come out of me some type of force, that felt like it has been waiting centuries to come out. the next thing I knew I saw all the kids in the playground scream and run away. I wasn't aware or paying attention to the other kids. All I was looking at was Luke who was in front of me floating in the air.

"Put...put me down..." Luke cried.

"Let Lira go!" I yelled in anger.

Jake who was holding Lira was in so much terror and shock that he loosens his grip and lira was able to break free. I was looking at her face in shock at what I was doing. We made eye contact and I saw she was afraid of me. At that point, I started to lower Luke. When he got to the ground Luke ran away with his friends that were left. I turned to the crowd standing in fear of me. I looked at Lira again in fear of me as well at that instant that was when I ran into the woods that was next to the playground. I ran and ran until I couldn't anymore. I hid behind a huge tree crying about what I did.

"Why? how? what?" I asked myself.

Soon after a couple of moments, I heard someone else's footsteps cracking the branches through the forest. I picked my head up from crying and got up to start to look around.

"Who's there?!" I yelled."What do you want from me?! can you just leave me alone..." I said.

I sat back down and then I saw Lira come from the bushes in the forests. She seemed sad and a little hesitant to come near me. but she came and sat next to me. I had gotten up to move away from her.

"Lira doesn't come near me...i..don't want to hurt you," I said with my head down, staring in the distance.

"You are not going to hurt me. I know and I know you didn't mean any of that back at the playground there," Lira said coming closer.

"Please...Lira..don't come.." I started to tear up then Lira came up behind me hugging me.

I was in shock at what she just did but all I knew was I needed it so then I relaxed.

"You will be okay. trust me on that Shyne, and you will never be alone. I am here. I will always be here." Lira said crying.

I turned around and hugged her back. We stood there for a while hugging, but as time went by I saw the sun go down. At that time we were sitting in the grass talking, looking at the sky. I think Lira was trying to distract me or cheer me up but I still was thinking about what happened. I knew she was thinking about it too.

"Hey Shyne, I have a question," Lira said.

"What is it?" I asked, tilting my head toward her.

"Did you know you could do that back there at recess?" Lira asked.

I sat up against the tree and turned toward her." honestly, I had no idea. I know that kids can be late bloomers but I don't think that was my case. I think there is something about me that my mom never told me. so I need to talk to her." I said.

"Well if you are going to tell her, I hope you know you are going to have to tell her about what happened in school Today," Lira said sitting up next to me.

"Ugh..do I have to? it's just I have a perfect streak of not getting in trouble and I would like to keep it that way." I said.

"Oh please Shyne, your goody two shoe self needs to take a risk," Lira said laughing.

"Hey!! at least I don't try to suck up to the teachers wishing for a good grade," I said smiling.

"Whatever soft boy, "Lira smiled.

I sighed"well I guess it is time for me to confront my fears of going back to school." I said, stretching.

"Yeah I guess we should be heading home, "Lira said getting up.

"Well we should be on our way because I'm pretty sure school ended, let's go," I said.

"Hey wait, "Lira grabbed my shirt." be careful walking home and good luck talking to your mom," Lira said.

"Thanks, you and you be careful too," I said.

    We both left out the woods heading home. I never brought it up to my mom because she didn't seem to have known. I thought the school would have called her by then but they didn't. The next day in school no one seemed not to know what happened. It was like everyone has forgotten what happened. I even asked the students in my class but they all said they just played and hanged out with their friends in recess. I asked Lira does she still remember everything and she said yes but she was shocked that no one said anything. That day forward I never told anyone about what happened. Lira swore that she wouldn't either. I never tried fighting back to anything because I didn't want to get in trouble. I just stayed to myself and Lira out of school other than my family, but now that I saw this happen again at the house I realized that I still had it. Since it happened so long ago I thought it was just a dream or something that just happened once, but it happened today with me from just getting stressed out. I calmed myself down and looked at the time, it was 6:30 pm. I pulled out some of the food that was in the refrigerator and warmed it up. I ate my dinner alone with no real joy. I was worried sick about my mom, Bryan, Neia, and Kai. I missed them even if they were never home a lot in the first place it was still nice seeing them here when they were. I cleaned up some more because I was pretty much finished with all my school work. Around that time usually, I was busy helping out my Bryan, Neia, and Kai at its time with things that I never really had downtime to myself unless I stayed up reading. When I was pretty much tired from cleaning I saw it was 8:30 pm. I headed to my room to get ready and put on all black clothes. When I was finished I headed out the door as fast as possible. I started heading up to the school I saw Lira there reading in the night sky. She was wearing black as well I guess I and her had the same idea.

"Hey, it looks like you have been here a while," I said to Lira.

"Hey, what took you so long it's like a minute to 9:00 pm?"Lira asked me when she closed her book.

"I kinda lost track of time," I said.

"Oh well at least your not late," Lira said.

"Well he's late in my book," Scarla said coming out of nowhere.

"Wow, wait, where did you come from?" I asked. I was surprised that she just started talking out of nowhere like she was there the whole time.

"I've been...places, come on let's go on in the library," Scarla said.

Scarla was wearing what she wore in school a big black hoodie with sunglasses. she was wearing a book bag on her back though. I and Lira started to head in and follow her in the library.

"Wait, how are we suppose to get in the library?" Lira asked.

"Leave that to me," Scarla said.

    Scarla started to do a spell and I see her wave her hands in the air and whisper something underneath her breath then the doors spread wide open. I and Lira looked at each other amazed at what she did and headed inside with Scarla. The Library was dark but the light flicked on as we came into the library.

"Hey is it a good idea to put the lights on?" I asked.

"It wouldn't matter the cameras are already offline, Come on let's go To the restricted area so we can go ahead and figure out what's going on with Shyne," Scarla said.

"Wait How did you know the cameras were offline?"Lira asked.

"Enough with your questions, let's get a move on before we get caught, "Scarla said coldly.

    We all speed walked to the restricted area in the back of the library then we saw a security guard sitting in a chair with a flashlight looking at a book. Scarla pushed me and lira against the bookcase.

"Hey what was that for?" Lira asked.

"Shush I don't want the security guard to hear us," Scarla said.

The security guard looked pretty fat for a guard for the library but he looks like he had a little bit of muscle in the arms. we all were just standing there waiting for the Scarla to tell us what to do next.

"Alright hold on, give me a sec, I got an idea," Scarla whispers.

Scarla goes in her book bag and grabs out a big book that says a word on it that I couldn't understand. It was a different language that wasn't elf or English. The book looked purple but old. It was pretty huge for a book. Then I saw Scarla start to mumble words I didn't know how to say. She turned toward the guard and waved her hands in the air then the guard fell asleep.

"Come on, I put the guard to sleep," Scarla said waving her hand for us to come.

When we reached the restricted area door the doors were locked so Scarla went ahead and went into her book and start to wave her hands in the air and started to mumble some more words that I didn't understand until the door opens.

"I thought the door had a spell ward on it," I said.

"Yeah but the spell I cast earlier damaged it long enough for me to unlock the restricted area door," Scarla said.

I, Lira, and Scarla Went on ahead in the restricted area. We all started to look around through the books to see if I can find anything and these visions.

"So Shyne this would be a good time for you to tell me what are we looking for, "Scarla said.

"Well...I have been having these visions of the castle and the kingdom.it has happened twice already, and I have no clue why I having them. I just need to find some books in here that may  tell me about the history of elves having visions." I said.

"Yeah, I'm also looking for something else as well I didn't want to tell you anything Shyne because it is a bit personal but I am looking for some information about some things as well, "Lira said.

"Oh...ok, that's fine Lira," I said.

"All right so you're telling me we're looking for books about the history of visions and then we're looking for something personal to you lira, am I correct?"Scarla asked.

"Well...Yeah, that's basically it," I said.

"Oh, and I thought this was gonna be about something really more important but it is what it is."Scarla says shrugging." I guess I'll help you guys, after all, I'm here with nothing else to do".

We were looking around the room looking at the different books. Pretty much every single one of us had a different book in our hands reading. Lira seemed to be very focused on the books more than any of us. After all, she is trying to look for a book of her own as I am looking for a book about visions I've been having for the past couple of days, but one thing is for sure I have to find some answers tonight. I found some books that seemed interesting to read so I grabbed the ones I wanted to read when I looked over at Scarla seemed really intrigued about a specific book called the ways of history. She went on ahead and put the book in her bag and kept looking through the books. I went up ahead to her.

"Hey Scarla, what book were you just reading did it have information about my visions?' i asked.

She was quiet for a moment then answered.".... let's just focus on looking through the books, less than about others business, "Scarla said walking away from me.

I was confused for a moment and just walked over to Lira to see what she was up to. I sat down next to her on the floor of the restricted area.

"Hey, have you found anything?" I asked.

"Well, I have found out that humans can get visions but not elves, but I have found that if you are in some sort of Prophecy it is a possibility you could get visions but I only ever heard this in rumors and it's also in this book I'm reading right now. it is more of a story than a factual book  but it is something to go off on."Lira said.

"Well, That's better than finding nothing because I found nothing about my visions all I found was more history on the poor secret notes and secret prophecies," I said.

"Oh well where any of the prophecies or notes appealing to what you are looking for?" Lira asked.

"Not all of them but some of them I am going to read later just for fun, but overall I'm looking for information about my visions and  I'm also trying to look for more information about my father as well and my family history," I said to lower my voice so Scarla doesn't hear me.

"Yeah, I kind of figured, that's what I'm actually kind of looking for to as well. After all, I have a little bit of an obsession with your family history and been for years now trying to figure out why your father left you with your mother and siblings like that," Lira said.

"Yeah, but have you found any information on the thing that you were trying to look for, "I asked.

"Well, honestly I just wanted to come here looking for maybe a little bit more advanced books and something about my feelings of magic that I think I need to figure out on my own that my family can't tell me, "Lira said.

Scarla started walking up to me and Lira, so we quickly hushed up and changed the subject.

"All right so have you guys found anything" because I know I haven't and I know that's getting late and we all have school so if you haven't found anything we should head out of here before the guard wakes up, "Scarla said.

We both nodded and started to gather up our stuff. Scarla started to walk towards the doorway of the restricted area. I started to get up off the floor and then Lira pulled me back down by the sleeve of my arm.

"Hey, I don't think you should trust Scarla she seems....off, just be careful when you are around her, "Lira whispers to me.

"Oh..someone must me be getting jealous...but yeah I will be careful," I said smiling.

"Alright soft boy, come on, let's get out of here then, "Lira said smiling.

    We both Caught up with Scarla at the doorway of the restricted area. When we got there Scarla put her hand in the air telling us to stop and move out the way of the doorway. I and Lira moved to the side next to the door where Scarla was standing. We peaked out the doorway of the restricted area looking out. I saw the security guard awake from his nap. He seemed to be checking out the library with his flashlight he seemed to be making his rounds around the library to make sure nothing suspicious happened. I was really scared because when he looked like he was heading toward the restricted area I was getting a little anxious then I felt Lira's hand touch mine and that was when I started to feel a bit calmer. Scarla pulled out her book and started to mumble some spell in a language I didn't understand. then the security guard fell to the floor snoring.

"Come on, let's go"Scarla whispered.

Lira and I followed Scarla out of the restricted area and started to head to the front of the library. Once we got to the entrance Scarla stopped walking. I and Lira were down at the bottom of the steps when I noticed she wasn't following us down.

"Well I guess my job is done here, "Scarla said.

"Thank you Scarla, this means so a lot to me even though I didn't get as much information as I thought I would, but I still got enough information to explain maybe just a little bit more of what I'm going through so thank you," I said.

"It's nothing, after all, we made a deal so it is really just Business, "Scarla said," but you should really be heading back home, it's getting late."

"Well don't you have to get back home?" I asked.

"Umm....yeah... I guess"Scarla lowering her voice.

I could tell from her face that she wasn't thrilled by the idea of going back to her house. I walked Toward Scarla back up the stairs. I saw Lira getting uncomfortable and impatient giving me a "what are you doing "face. but I ignored her and kept going up the steps. Scarla just stood there still as a statue. When I got up the steps I walked up to Scarla.

"Hey look, I know we don't know each other that well but if you need a place to stay for the night you can stay with me. my siblings are usually out working and my mom as well so you could stay," I said.

"Thanks..but I have a home," Scarla said putting her head down.

"Are you sure about that? cause it looks to me like your home right now is not making you feel happy, but hey I'm not going to force you," I said throwing my hands in the air.

I went back down the stairs with a couple of books I wanted to read that did seem interesting to read.

"Hey, you ready?" Lira asked me.

I looked back at Scarla standing there, not saying a word," yeah I'm ready, are you staying over tonight?" I asked Lira, facing her.

"Yup I already have my stuff there, so I'm ready," Lira said smiling.

"Yeah I figured when I found your clothes in my room," I said grinning.

We started to walk to my house. when I heard Scarla say something.

"Hey!!" Scarla yelled running down the steps.

"Do you have room for one more?"Scarla asked.

"Yeah of course," I said smiling.

I saw Lira face into an "I'm warning you that you can't trust her," look. I gave her a "relax everything is going to be okay," look. We all walked toward my house. It was mostly quiet for most of the walk home. So I decided to make up a  conversation.

"So, how was school?" I asked feeling corny.

Lira started to laugh out of nowhere. Then I did too.

"Wait, why are you guys laughing?"Scarla asked confused.

"Haha..well I asked a corny question and she started to laugh then I did.." I said calming down smiling.

"Oh well still don't get the joke but my day was good I worked and learned..stuff.."Scarla said.

"Oh that's cool," I said grinning.

"What did you learn?" Lira asked Scarla.

"Umm....magic.."Scarla said.

"Oh.." Lira said."well...I learned magic to today..haha..."Lira laughed for a shorter time.

It got quiet again and awkward but by then we reached my house. I opened the door realizing I didn't lock it but nothing seemed stolen when I looked inside so we went in. I made sure I locked the door this time.

"Well this is my home," I said.

Scarla walked inside and she seemed scared and surprised when she came in. She looked around the house like she never been in a home before.

"So Scarla can you please take off your shoes I don't want the dirt in the house?" I asked.

Lira was taking off her shoes and coat, and so was i. Scarla turned and looked at us weirdly for a moment.

"Yeah sorry," Scarla said. she took off her shoes and I saw her black socks.

"So Shyne do you have any leftovers, I didn't eat dinner yet?"Lira asked.

"Um yeah, I made a whole bunch of grilled cheeses early you can have some if you want," I said.

"Alright, but why did you make a whole bunch of grilled cheese sandwiches if it's only you at the house?" Lira asked while washing her hands.

"Umm...well I was tutoring Jason at the time...and...i...I have to talk to you later about it," I said.

I went in the kitchen with Lira eating the grilled cheeses but I just saw Scarla standing there like she didn't know what to do with herself.

"hey, Scarla do you want something to eat?" I asked.

"Umm...am I allowed?"Scarla asked.

"Haha come on Scarla what do you like to eat?" I asked laughing." but can you please wash your hands."

"I don't know anything, "Scarla said.

"Well do you eat lasagna?" I asked.

"I never had it, so I don't know what it tastes like, "Scarla said.

I and Lira looked at each other in shock, then lira dropped her grilled cheese on her plate and I froze for a moment. suddenly I turned back to Scarla.

"You...you never have lasagna?" I asked.

"No is that bad?" Scarla said.

"No it is it I just never met someone who never was on there before," I said."Would you like to try some?" I asked.

"Is it safe to eat?" Scarla asked.

"As safe as it can ever be," I said smiling.

Scarla put her bag down and washed her hands. I made Scarla a plate with lasagna and put it on the table. She came and sat down at the table and started to say a different blessing. She said it low but it sounded unfamiliar.

"I pray to-.." when she saw me and lira there she said it in her head.

We all sat at the table chilling. Scarla and Lira ate their food. Scarla couldn't stop eating the lasagna.

"Mmm...This is the best food I have ever eaten in my life," Scarla said with a stuffed mouth.

"Thank you, I cooked it, "I said.

 We all ate something then after we were all pretty done, I and Lira cleaned up. I saw that Scarla didn't seem to move out of her chair because she must have been full. When I and lira were finished we put on some music.
