Chapter 28: Lew’s Choice Lew He’d taken his jacket off, rolled up his sleeves, and loosened his tie when the knock came at the door. He’d been half expecting it. He opened it, but didn’t step back far enough to let Alec in. Alec loomed against the patch of clear night sky visible over next door’s chimney. His hands were in the pockets of his raincoat and his hat was pushed back on his head. “I’m sorry,” Alec said. “I’m sorry.” Lew didn’t respond. Alec looked at the ground then up again. “May I come in?” he asked. Lew stepped back silently. He couldn’t think of anything to say. Alec shut the door and turned to face him.
