Afterward, Will threw open the French windows and they walked out into the roses. The early, scented varieties were flowering now, trained over arches and staked in their beds. It was glorious. They found a bench, under one of the arbors. It was new since Will had last visited. Side by side, they rested. Fenn seemed half asleep, secondary eyelid covering his pupil. “What are you thinking?” Will asked. Fenn turned his head, eyelid still masking his thoughts. “I am thinking how best to catch the Carnas. About what Malach told me yesterday.” He paused. “I thought they were going to help me back. I had the egg. They told me either the egg or the Carnas, and they would let me back and let Keren go. But then, yesterday, they said one egg wasn’t enough. That I would need to find the Carnas
