CHAPTER FIVE

1257 Words
The world spun around me as Daniel’s arms wrapped tightly, his voice low and steady in my ear. “You’re safe now.” But his words couldn’t drown out the chaos roaring inside me. Diana’s betrayal, her venomous screams, still rang through my mind. I couldn’t forget the rough hands dragging me into that car or the suffocating sting of chemicals pulling me into the abyss. “Safe? No.” I wasn’t sure I’d ever feel safe again. Joel helped me into the back seat, his grip firm yet careful, as if I might shatter at the slightest pressure. Daniel slid in beside me, his hand seeking mine. The warmth of his touch steadied me, but the silence between us was suffocating. He stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked like it might c***k. The engine roared to life, and the car surged forward, the forest around us blurring into streaks of shadow and silver under the moonlight. The air inside the car felt heavy, charged with unspoken fears. I wanted to say something to ask the questions clawing at my mind…but the words stuck in my throat. Every muscle in my body felt drained, my spirit weighed down by exhaustion. And every time I closed my eyes, I saw it all over again. “Leah,” Daniel’s voice broke the silence, pulling me back. “You’re quiet.” I turned to meet his piercing gaze. His hand remained wrapped around mine, steady and unyielding. “I don’t know what to say,” I whispered, my voice hoarse. “You don’t have to,” he murmured, his thumb brushing over my knuckles. “Just… stay with me.” There was a rawness in his tone I’d never heard before, and it caught me off guard. Tonight had shaken us both in ways I couldn’t yet understand. Joel’s voice cut through the fragile moment. “We need to talk about what happened back there.” “Not now,” Daniel said, his voice sharp. “Yes, now,” Joel snapped, his knuckles tight on the wheel. “Diana’s actions weren’t impulsive. They were calculated. She wasn’t working alone.” The tension in the car thickened, a pressure that made it hard to breathe. Daniel’s grip on my hand tightened, his posture rigid. “She thought she could scare Leah off,” Daniel said coldly. “She wanted to make her run. But she underestimated me.” His voice dropped lower, filled with a possessiveness that sent a shiver down my spine. “This wasn’t just about Leah,” Joel said. “It was a test, Daniel. They wanted to see how far you’d go. They’re watching you.” Daniel’s eyes snapped to Joel, a storm brewing beneath his calm exterior. “Who?” Joel shook his head, frustration flickering across his face. “I don’t know yet. But this isn’t over. Whoever’s behind this, they’ve just started.” The words sent a chill through me. I turned my gaze to the window, watching the forest grow darker and denser, the trees almost leaning in, as if they, too, were trying to hear our conversation. “I don’t understand,” I said quietly, my voice trembling. “Why me? What did I do to deserve this?” Daniel shifted closer, his thumb tracing soothing circles on the back of my hand. “You’re more important than you realize, Leah. To me. To the pack.” Joel’s eyes met mine in the rearview mirror, his expression grim. “She was desperate. Diana thought she was losing everything and lashed out.” Daniel scoffed. “Desperation doesn’t excuse what she did. She knew exactly what she was doing.” His words were sharp and heavy, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that Diana’s schemes were only the surface of something far darker. This wasn’t just about jealousy. It felt deliberate, calculated…like Diana had been the puppet, but someone else had tied the strings. I pressed my forehead to the cool glass, watching shadows dance along the edges of the headlights. My chest tightened, the unease growing. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw it… a flash of silver, darting between the trees. “Wait!” I gasped, clutching Daniel’s arm. “Did you see that?” His head snapped toward me. “See what?” “I… I don’t know,” I stammered, my heart racing. “Something… or someone.” Joel slowed the car, his sharp gaze scanning the road ahead. “Could’ve been an animal,” he muttered, though his tone betrayed his doubt. “Don’t stop,” Daniel ordered, his voice low and commanding. “Keep driving. We can’t risk it.” The car lurched forward again, but my unease only deepened. I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched, that something was closing in. The shadows around us grew thicker, heavier. And then it happened. A deafening crash reverberated through the car as something massive slammed into the side. I screamed, thrown against Daniel, who pulled me close in a protective grip. “Hold on!” Joel shouted, struggling to keep control of the wheel. Another impact, this one from behind… sent the car skidding. My head snapped around, and I saw them. Glowing eyes, bright and menacing, watching us from the darkness. “Wolves,” Daniel growled, his voice colder than I’d ever heard it. “They’re not ours.” Joel slammed on the brakes, the car screeching to a halt. “We’re outnumbered. Daniel, we need to…” “I’ll handle it,” Daniel cut him off. His hand squeezed mine briefly before he turned to me, his eyes fierce. “Stay in the car. No matter what happens, don’t get out.” “Daniel, no!” I pleaded, grabbing his arm. “You can’t face them alone.” He cupped my face, his touch gentle despite the storm raging outside. “Trust me,” he whispered. And before I could say another word, he was gone, the door slamming shut behind him. I pressed my face to the window, watching helplessly as Daniel faced the wolves. They emerged from the trees, massive and menacing, their eyes glowing with malice. The largest wolf shifted, his body morphing into that of a man. He stepped forward, a cruel smirk twisting his features. “Alpha,” he sneered, his voice thick with menace. “We’ve been waiting for you.” Daniel didn’t flinch. “You’ve crossed into Moonlight Pack territory. State your business.” The man laughed, dark and cruel. “This isn’t about territory, Alpha. This is just a warning.” My heart pounded in my chest as I watched, every instinct screaming at me to do something…anything… but I was frozen, trapped in the car, my breath fogging up the glass. Daniel took a step forward, his posture brimming with authority, power radiating from him. “You’ve delivered your message. Now leave. Before I make you regret ever stepping foot on my land.” For a moment, the man’s smirk faltered, but it quickly returned, sharper, more dangerous. “We’ll see each other again, Alpha. Sooner than you think.” Without another word, he shifted back into his wolf form, disappearing into the darkness, the others following close behind. Daniel stood in the middle of the road, his shoulders tense, before turning and striding back to the car. “They’re testing us,” he said, his voice dark with rage. “This is far from over.”
