The Desert Assembly

The helicopter touched down at the edge of the desert at dusk. Marcus looked out at the original Lazarus Account bunker—the one where Silas Vane had first tested the code. The building looked abandoned from the outside. But the texter’s message said otherwise: They’re planning to activate all the remaining codes at once. Claire was beside him. “How many?” “The texter said dozens. Maybe more.” Damian checked his rifle. “We go in quiet.” “We go in fast.” Marcus walked toward the bunker. --- The entrance was the same steel door. Same keypad. Same cameras. Kay’s replacement—a young woman named Jenna—worked the console from the helicopter. “Cameras are disabled. Motion sensors are looping.” Marcus pushed the door open. Inside, the bunker had changed. The old medical equipment was gone. In its place: rows of chairs. Wires. Helmets. And people. Dozens of them. Sitting in the chairs. Eyes closed. Faces peaceful. A man stood at the center of the room. Tall. Grey beard. Eyes that glowed faintly gold. “Marcus Cole. Welcome to the awakening.” “Who are you?” “My name is Elias. I was the first. The original test subject. The code was perfected in me. And now I’m going to share it with the world.” Marcus raised his Sig. “You’re going to enslave the world.” “I’m going to free it. From pain. From trauma. From the weight of bad memories.” “That’s not freedom. That’s control.” Elias smiled. “You see it as control. I see it as mercy.” --- The people in the chairs opened their eyes. Their eyes glowed gold. “The Awakened,” Elias said. “They chose this. They volunteered. They want to be free of their past.” “You brainwashed them.” “I liberated them.” The Awakened stood up. They moved toward Marcus. Not fast. Not aggressive. Just… advancing. Damian fired over their heads. They didn’t flinch. “They don’t feel fear,” Elias said. “They don’t feel pain. They don’t feel doubt. They are perfect.” Marcus lowered his Sig. “I don’t want to hurt them.” “You can’t hurt them.” “Then I’ll hurt you.” He lunged at Elias. --- The Awakened intercepted him. They grabbed his arms. His legs. Held him still. Elias walked to Marcus. “The code in you is gone. Your mother saw to that. But the code in them is strong. And soon, it will be in everyone.” “You’re insane.” “I’m a visionary.” Elias pulled a device from his pocket. Small. Red light. “This is the broadcast key. One press, and the activation signal goes out. Everyone with dormant code—thousands of people—will awaken. They will become like us. Perfect. Unified. Free.” Marcus struggled. “You’ll destroy their lives.” “I’ll give them new ones.” Elias raised the device. Claire fired. The device shattered. Elias stared at the ruins. “No.” Claire fired again. Elias fell. The Awakened stopped moving. --- Marcus pulled himself free. He walked to Elias. The man was alive—wounded in the shoulder. “It’s over.” Elias laughed. “You think I’m the only one? There are dozens like me. Scattered across the country. Waiting. They have their own broadcast keys. You can’t stop them all.” “I can stop you.” Marcus called the FBI. --- The bunker was raided. The Awakened were taken to a medical facility. Elias was arrested. Marcus stood outside, watching the sun rise over the desert. Claire was beside him. “He was just the beginning.” “There are others. Dozens. Maybe more.” “Then we find them.” Marcus looked at the bunker. At the place where it all started. “We find them.” --- They flew back to the cabin. Catherine was waiting on the porch. “You’re back.” “We’re back.” “Elias?” “In custody.” Arthur came out with coffee. “The network is tracking the other broadcasters. We have leads on three so far.” “Where?” “Chicago. Los Angeles. New York.” Marcus looked at Claire. “We need to split up.” --- Damian would take Chicago. Claire would take Los Angeles. Marcus would take New York. Catherine would stay at the cabin with Arthur. “We go at dawn,” Marcus said. --- The flight to New York was short. Marcus landed at a private airfield. Jenna was with him, running point on the tech. The broadcaster was in a warehouse in Brooklyn. Hidden. Secure. Marcus approached the door. Locked. He picked it. Inside, a woman stood at a console. Dark hair. Gold eyes. “Marcus Cole. I was expecting you.” “Who are you?” “My name is Vera. I’m Elias’s sister. And I’m going to finish what he started.” She raised a broadcast key. Marcus fired. The key shattered. Vera didn’t flinch. “That was a decoy.” She pressed a button on the console. The warehouse filled with light. --- Marcus shielded his eyes. When he looked again, Vera was gone. The console was destroyed. Jenna ran to the terminal. “She wiped it. No data. No trace.” “Where did she go?” “I don’t know. But she’s not alone.” Marcus called Claire. “Vera escaped. She had a decoy broadcast key.” Claire’s voice was tight. “Same here. Chicago. The broadcaster got away.” Damian’s voice came through. “Los Angeles. Same story.” Marcus felt the cold settle in his chest. “They knew we were coming.” --- They flew back to the cabin. Catherine was pacing. “Someone tipped them off.” “Someone inside the network,” Arthur said. “Again?” “Again.” Marcus looked at the team. Jenna. Damian. Claire. “Who knew about the raids?” “Everyone,” Jenna said. “I sent the locations to the whole team.” “Then the traitor could be anyone.” --- That night, Marcus sat on the porch. No roses. Just woods and stars. Claire brought him coffee. “You’re thinking about the traitor.” “I’m thinking about how many times we’ve been betrayed. How many people we’ve trusted who turned on us.” “It comes with the territory.” “It shouldn’t.” She sat beside him. “But it does. And we still fight.” Marcus looked at the stars. “We still fight.” --- His phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number. “The broadcasters are regrouping. They have a new leader. Someone you know. Someone you trusted. Someone who was with you from the beginning.” Marcus typed back: “Who?” “Figure it out. Before they activate the codes. You have seventy-two hours.” Marcus put the phone away. Claire looked at him. “What was that?” “A deadline.” “For what?” “The end.”
