It Started On A Wednesday

922 Words
Chapter one I had only been in the school for a few days. Monday was registration day, and everything still felt unfamiliar—the classrooms, the faces, the voices, even the people I would eventually call my friends. I was the new guy, still trying to find my way around and understand where I belonged. By Wednesday, I had already started settling in. That was also the day I finally met the girl everyone had been talking about. Before I ever saw her, my new friends had told me about her. “Her name is Greatness.” They described her as brilliant. Beautiful. Confident. And, according to them, she didn't really care what anybody thought about her. That last part caught my attention. I became curious. I wanted to see this girl everyone seemed to know. Tuesday came. She didn't come to school. So I waited. Then Wednesday arrived. And finally, she walked into the classroom. For a moment, I understood exactly what my friends had been talking about. She was beautiful—more beautiful than I had imagined from their descriptions. There was something about her appearance and the way she carried herself that immediately caught my attention. I remember thinking, Wow. She walked into the classroom and eventually sat behind me. I turned toward one of my friends. “Is that Greatness?” “Yes,” he replied. I looked back at her. So this is Greatness. I couldn't help smiling. Then my friend laughed. “You won't be able to talk to her.” I looked at him. “Why?” He told me that he had tried before, but she hadn't really given him the attention he wanted. According to him, there was no way I would be different. I laughed. “You don't know me,” I told him. “Just give me time.” But the truth was, the bet wasn't the reason I wanted to talk to her. Something had already changed inside me the moment I saw her. I couldn't explain it. It was strange because I had never experienced that kind of feeling before. I had seen beautiful girls before, of course, but this felt different. I wanted to know her. I wanted to talk to her. And, somehow, I already wished that one day she would become mine. I just didn't know how that story would unfold. The next day, an opportunity came unexpectedly. Greatness was in the Arts class while I was in Science, so we didn't exactly have many reasons to interact. Then I noticed something. She was holding a personal timetable. I happened to see that Bible reading was included in it. I was surprised. She reads the Bible? For some reason, that made me even more curious about her. I saw an opportunity. She was standing with two of her friends, so I called her. She looked around as if wondering who I was calling. “Me?” I nodded. She came over. “Hi. How are you doing?” I introduced myself, and she introduced herself too. Then I asked her about the timetable. “Are you the one who made this?” She explained that it wasn't exactly hers, but that she had a copy and was supposed to give it to someone. Then I asked about the Bible reading. “You actually read the Bible?” She smiled. “Yes.” That simple answer surprised me. We talked for a little while. Then something happened that I would remember for a long time. We smiled. We shook hands. It was the first time I had ever held her hand. Then she walked away. But somehow, she didn't really leave. Not from my mind. For the rest of that day, I kept thinking about our conversation. The smile. The handshake. Her voice. Everything. When I got home, I found myself smiling whenever I remembered her. I didn't know it then, but Greatness had already taken up a space in my thoughts that I couldn't easily get her out of. From that point, we started talking more. At first, we were simply classmates. Friends. We joked around. We debated. We talked about ordinary things. To her, perhaps, it was just friendship. But I had another intention quietly growing inside me. I liked her. A lot. And deep down, I wanted more than friendship. Then one day, something small happened that changed everything. I took her pen without telling her. I was playing around with it and eventually kept it longer than I should have. When she noticed, she asked me if I had her pen. I denied it. She became upset. Then she told me to stop playing around and respect myself. Her tone was harsh. It caught me completely off guard. We had been getting along. We had talked and laughed together. So I couldn't understand why she suddenly sounded so angry with me. I didn't like being spoken to that way. But instead of arguing, I blamed myself. Maybe I shouldn't have taken her pen. I decided to leave it alone. I told myself I wouldn't bother her anymore. And I kept that promise. We stopped talking. Days passed. Then weeks. Eventually, the friendship we had started building disappeared. The girl who had occupied so much of my mind suddenly became a stranger again. And just like that, the first chapter of our story seemed to end. But neither of us knew that it wasn't really the end. It was only the beginning. Next chapter>>
