A New Beginning

1500 Words
Chapter Seven The month I was supposed to return to school finally arrived. Everything suddenly felt real. For a long time, university had been something I talked about, something I imagined, something I was preparing myself for. Now it was no longer just an idea. I had received my admission, and I was getting ready to leave home and begin another chapter of my life. I was excited, but I was also carrying another feeling with me. I was going to miss her. Before the admission came, she and I had spent a lot of time talking on the phone. Since secondary school had ended, our communication had mostly depended on our phones. We chatted, called each other, joked, and talked about different things. Those conversations helped us remain close even though we were no longer seeing each other every day. When I told her that I had finally gained admission, she was happy for me. I could hear the happiness in her reaction, but there was another emotion underneath it. She was sad. She knew what the admission meant. I was going far away. I would no longer be around her the way I had been before. We had already experienced distance during holidays, but this was different. This time, I was not simply going away for a short vacation. I was preparing to begin university, and my new life would be far from her. She knew that our communication would probably depend even more on phone calls and chats. I understood why she felt that way because I felt it too. I was happy that I had been given the opportunity to continue my education, but I was not completely happy about leaving someone who had become such an important part of my life. It was a strange mixture of emotions. I was excited about the future and sad about what I was leaving behind. Still, we decided to enjoy the time we had before I left. We talked. We chatted. We laughed. We had some of our best moments during that period. Every conversation seemed to carry more meaning because we both knew that my departure was getting closer. Sometimes, I would simply think about how different everything was from the day I first saw her. Back then, she had been a stranger. I had only seen her walk into a classroom on a Wednesday. I did not know her. I did not know what she was like. I did not know the things she liked or disliked. I certainly could not have imagined that years later, she would be someone I would miss while preparing to leave for university. Our story had taken us through friendship, misunderstandings, distance, reconciliation, and a relationship. Now it was taking us somewhere else. University. As the days passed, I began preparing for the journey. There were many things I needed to take with me. I started thinking about what I would need for school and what I would have to arrange before leaving. I knew that university would require more preparation than simply putting a few clothes into a bag. I had to organize my belongings. I had to think about the things I would need in my new environment. I had to prepare myself mentally for the responsibility that came with becoming a university student. Everything around me seemed to remind me that I was leaving. At times, the excitement became stronger. I imagined myself walking into a new school environment, meeting new people, attending classes, and experiencing a completely different kind of education. But then I would remember her. I would think about the fact that I would not be able to simply walk over to her whenever I wanted to talk. I would not see her every day. I would not have those ordinary school moments that had once seemed so normal. No sitting together during breaks. No seeing each other around school. No casually starting a conversation because we happened to be in the same place. Those simple moments would become memories. And that realization made me emotional. Our relationship had grown in an environment where seeing each other was easy. Even when we had misunderstandings, we could eventually see each other again. Even when we needed space, we remained connected to the same school environment. But now, distance would become much more serious. I wondered how we would handle it. Would our conversations remain the same? Would we still find enough time to talk? Would university life change me? Would it change her? I did not have answers to those questions. All I could do was move forward. The night before I started making the final preparations, I found myself thinking about the journey that had brought me to that point. I remembered how curious I had been when my friends first told me about her. I remembered seeing her for the first time. I remembered the first conversation we had. I remembered the friendship that followed. I remembered the misunderstanding that caused us to stop talking. I remembered how we eventually became friends again. I remembered the group presentation that brought us back together. I remembered the conversations during breaks. I remembered asking her about relationships. I remembered the courage it took to finally ask her to be my girlfriend. I remembered waiting for her answer. I remembered the happiness I felt when she finally said yes. I remembered the period when she asked for distance during vacation. I remembered giving her the space she requested. I remembered the day we finally sat together again and talked. I remembered the many moments we had after that. And now, I was packing my things to leave. It felt like I was closing one chapter while opening another. Secondary school had given me more than education. It had given me memories. It had introduced me to people who became important to me. Most importantly, it had given me a story I never expected to have. And now, that chapter was ending. University was waiting. I knew there would be new challenges. I knew I would have to adjust to a different environment. I knew I would have responsibilities I had never experienced before. But I was ready to try. At the same time, I didn't want distance to erase what she and I had built. So we continued talking. Whenever we could, we made the most of our conversations. Sometimes we talked about ordinary things. Sometimes we talked about how much we would miss each other. Sometimes we simply enjoyed hearing each other's voices. Those moments made leaving a little easier. Not completely easy, but easier. Eventually, the day of preparation became the day of departure. My belongings were getting ready. Everything I needed was being gathered together. I looked around and realized that I was truly about to leave. There was excitement in my heart. There was sadness too. But above everything, there was uncertainty. I was stepping into a future I could not see yet. I did not know exactly what university would be like. I did not know the people I would meet. I did not know the experiences waiting for me. And I did not know how the distance would affect my relationship with her. But I knew that life was moving forward. I could not remain in secondary school forever. The same school that had brought us together was now behind us. The future was calling. So I prepared myself. I prepared my things. I prepared my mind. And I prepared my heart for the journey ahead. As I looked back at everything that had happened, I realized something simple. Sometimes, growing up means being happy about where you are going while still feeling sad about what you are leaving behind. That was exactly how I felt. I was happy to become a university student. I was proud of how far I had come. But I was going to miss her. And she was going to miss me too. We both knew that our conversations would now have to carry the weight of distance. But for the moment, we were still connected. We still had our phones. We still had our conversations. We still had our memories. And we still had the story we had created together. I carried those memories with me, knowing distance could not erase everything we shared. I didn't know what the next chapter would look like. I only knew that it was beginning. And somewhere ahead of me was a new school, a new environment, and a new life. I took one final look at everything I had prepared. Then I reminded myself that every new beginning requires leaving something familiar behind. This was my turn to begin again. Secondary school was over. University was next. And whatever happened from that point forward, I knew that the story that started on a Wednesday had already changed my life in ways I never expected. Next chapter>>
