The Journey Begins

Chapter Eight The day I had been preparing for finally arrived. After all the waiting, planning, packing, conversations, and emotions, it was finally time for me to travel to school. University was no longer something I was simply talking about. It was happening. I had spent the previous days getting the things I would need ready. I checked my belongings and made sure I had what I needed for this new stage of my life. There was excitement everywhere, but underneath that excitement was a feeling I could not ignore. I was leaving. Leaving home. Leaving the familiar environment I had known. Leaving the place where I had spent my secondary-school years. And, most importantly, leaving her behind. I had already told her about my admission. She knew I was going away, and we had talked about it many times. She was happy for me because she knew this was an important opportunity, but she was also sad because she knew I would be far from her. I understood her feelings. I felt the same way. I was excited about becoming a university student, but I was not excited about the distance that would come with it. For so long, our relationship had been connected to school. School was where I first saw her. It was where our friendship began. It was where we stopped talking. It was where we found our way back to each other. It was where our relationship began. And now I was leaving that place behind. The morning of my journey felt different. There was something about knowing that I was about to leave that made everything around me seem more meaningful. The things I normally wouldn't pay attention to suddenly seemed important. I knew I wouldn't be coming back to this exact routine every day. I wouldn't wake up and prepare for secondary school anymore. I wouldn't walk through those familiar surroundings as a secondary-school student. I was becoming something new. A university student. As the time to leave drew closer, I kept thinking about her. I wondered what she was doing. I wondered how she felt. I knew she would miss me because she had told me before how much she missed me whenever we were apart. This time, however, the separation was different. It wasn't just a holiday. It wasn't a short break. I was going to a new school far away. Our communication would mostly happen through the phone. Calls. Chats. Messages. That would become our new normal. I knew there would be days when I would miss her badly and wish she were nearby. There would probably be days when she would feel the same way. But there was nothing either of us could do to stop life from moving forward. Eventually, everything was ready. My belongings were packed. The things I needed for school were arranged. I had prepared as much as I could. Then came the moment when I actually had to leave. I remember the feeling of stepping into that journey. There was excitement inside me. There was nervousness too. I was entering an environment I had never experienced before. I didn't know exactly what awaited me. I didn't know the people I would meet. I didn't know what my classes would be like. I didn't know what challenges university would bring. But I knew I had to go. This was the beginning of another stage of my life. As I travelled, my mind went back through everything that had happened. It was almost unbelievable. A simple Wednesday had started it all. If I had known that day what the future would bring, I probably would have found it difficult to believe. I had seen a girl walk into a classroom. I had become curious about her. I had approached her. We became friends. Then we stopped talking. Later, we became friends again. Our friendship grew. I eventually asked her to be my girlfriend. She said yes. We experienced misunderstandings. We experienced distance. We found our way back to each other. We laughed. We talked. We created memories. And now, after everything, I was travelling to university. Life had changed so much. The journey continued. As I moved farther away, I knew that the distance between us was becoming real. But I also knew that distance did not automatically mean the end. We still had our memories. We still had our conversations. We still had the bond we had built over time. I didn't know what the future held for us. I didn't know whether everything would remain the same. I didn't know how university life would affect me or how the distance would affect our relationship. But I didn't want to spend that moment worrying about things I couldn't control. I wanted to focus on the opportunity in front of me. I was going to university. I was beginning a new chapter. Eventually, I arrived at my destination. For a moment, everything felt unfamiliar. The environment was different. The atmosphere was different. The people were different. This wasn't secondary school anymore. This was university. I had finally made it. I had moved from being a secondary-school student to becoming a university student. As I settled into the reality of where I was, I thought about how much had happened before I reached that point. I thought about the girl who had once been a stranger. I thought about the first Wednesday. I thought about the first conversation. I thought about everything that came afterward. And I realized that some of the most important moments in life don't always announce themselves when they happen. Sometimes, a normal day becomes the beginning of something you will remember for years. For me, that day was a Wednesday. I didn't know what that Wednesday would eventually become. I didn't know it would lead to friendship. I didn't know it would lead to love. I didn't know it would give me memories that I would carry into another stage of my life. But it did. Now, as I stood at the beginning of my university journey, I knew I was leaving one part of my story behind. But I wasn't forgetting it. I was carrying it with me. I had finished secondary school. I had written my Senior WAEC. I had gained admission. And finally, I had travelled to school. The journey that had once seemed so far away had become reality. I was now stepping into a completely different world. A world of university life, new responsibilities, new experiences, and an uncertain future. And somewhere far away, she was continuing her own journey. We were no longer students in the same secondary-school environment. We couldn't simply meet whenever we wanted. We couldn't depend on seeing each other every day. From that moment on, our relationship would have to adapt to distance. But as I looked ahead, I felt something I hadn't felt before. Hope. I didn't know what would happen next. I didn't know where life would take me. I didn't know where it would take her. But I knew that the story we had already lived was real. It had happened. Every friendship. Every misunderstanding. Every reconciliation. Every conversation. Every memory. Every moment that brought us closer. They were all part of the journey. And now, another journey had begun. I had finally travelled to school. I had left home. I had left secondary school behind. And I had stepped into university life. The future was waiting for me. I took a breath and looked ahead. For the first time, I wasn't looking back at where I had been. I was looking forward to where I was going. The story that started on a Wednesday had brought me here. And now, my university journey was about to begin. THE END
