We Finally Spoke To Each Other Again

Chapter two The holiday eventually came, and just like that, SS1 became a memory. School closed, students went their separate ways, and everyone went home to enjoy the break. It was a chance to rest, spend time with family, and prepare for another academic year. For me, however, there was something I couldn't completely leave behind. Her. Even though we had stopped talking, I still remembered the moments we had shared. I remembered how we used to talk, laugh, joke, and sometimes debate over the smallest things. I remembered how excited I had been when I first approached her and how, somehow, that simple friendship had become important to me. But things had changed. After what happened between us in SS1, I had decided to keep my distance. I didn't want another misunderstanding, and I didn't want to force myself into her life. If she wanted space, I was willing to give it to her. So I moved on with my own life. At least, I tried to. Then the new school year began. We were no longer SS1 students. We had moved up to SS2. With the new class came new arrangements, and this time, things were even more different between us. I was in the Science class, while she was in the Arts class. Our classrooms were in different blocks, which meant that I no longer had the simple opportunity of seeing her every day. She wasn't sitting behind me anymore. I couldn't just turn around and see her. We weren't sharing the same classroom space, and there was no reason for us to talk. And honestly, I missed her. I missed the moments we had shared before everything went wrong. Sometimes, I would remember a joke she had made or something we had argued about, and I would smile to myself. Then I would remember that we weren't talking anymore. It was strange. Someone could be so close to you one moment and then become almost completely absent from your life the next. I didn't know whether she missed those moments too. I didn't know what she thought about me. I only knew how I felt. And I wasn't going to chase after her. If we were ever going to speak again, I thought, maybe it would happen naturally. I didn't know life have a way of bringing us back together again. It happened during the first term of SS2. Our English teacher announced that we were going to have group presentations. The class would be divided into three groups: Group A, Group B, and Group C. I was made the leader of Group B. She was made the leader of Group A. We weren't in the same group. That was the important part. At first, I didn't think much of it. I was more focused on getting my group organized and making sure we would do well. Everyone knew that the presentation was going to matter. There was also a kind of competition between the groups because everybody wanted to perform better than the others. The students in each group mattered too. Everyone wanted brilliant students on their team because having strong members could make the presentation easier and improve the group's chances of getting good marks. As the teacher continued assigning people to the different groups, I started paying attention to who would be joining mine. Then something unexpected happened. She approached me. It had been a long time since we had properly spoken, so seeing her come toward me immediately caught my attention. She wanted to know how many people were already in my group. "How many people do you have?" she asked. I told her. She also told me how many people she had in her own group. We began talking about our group members and comparing who we had. It was a simple conversation. But to me, it meant more than she probably realized. For the first time in a long while, she was standing in front of me and talking to me again. There was no anger. No tension. No uncomfortable silence. Just a normal conversation. And I was happy. I tried not to show it too much, but inside, I was genuinely glad that we were speaking again. It felt like a small door had opened between us. And I wasn't going to close it. As the days passed, the presentation gave us more reasons to interact. We started talking again. At first, it was mostly about the presentation. We discussed what needed to be done. We talked about practicing. We helped each other when we could. But slowly, the conversations moved beyond the schoolwork. We began talking like we used to. We joked around. We laughed. We teased each other. Sometimes we debated about different things. The friendship that I thought was gone was slowly coming back. And I couldn't lie to myself about how happy that made me. I had missed her. I had missed having her around. I had missed being able to talk to her without feeling like there was some invisible wall between us. Now that the wall was disappearing, I wanted to enjoy every moment. But there was still one thing bothering me. I had never forgotten what happened in SS1. I had never really understood why she suddenly became angry with me. For a long time, I had blamed myself. I thought maybe taking her pen and playing around with it had been enough to make her angry. Maybe I had crossed a line without realizing it. So one day, while we were talking and preparing for the presentation, I decided to ask her. I wanted the truth. I asked her why she had acted that way toward me back then. Her answer surprised me. It wasn't really about the pen. There had been something else going on. She explained that, on that day, she had been standing with two of her friends. One of them had been involved in a situation concerning a boy she considered her boyfriend. She had been told to stay away from him. Somehow, that situation affected the way she saw me. She had misunderstood my intentions. She thought I might have been trying to play with her or make a fool of her. She also believed that I had a girlfriend. When I heard that, I was confused. I wondered why she had believed that we were dating. She explained that she had eventually realized that it wasn't true. And then came the part I never expected. She admitted that jealousy had played a part in the way she reacted. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. Jealousy? That was the last thing I had expected to hear. All this time, I had thought she simply didn't like me. I had thought maybe she was angry because I had taken her pen or because I had somehow annoyed her. I had never imagined that there had been another feeling underneath it all. I was still a little upset. I couldn't completely understand why she had treated me that way without simply asking me what was going on. But at the same time, I finally understood that she hadn't acted that way for the reason I had assumed. She apologized. I accepted her apology. And just like that, something that had been sitting between us for so long finally disappeared. The past was no longer hanging over our friendship. We could finally talk without carrying the weight of that old misunderstanding. And that felt good. Our preparation for the presentation continued. We practiced. We rehearsed our different parts. We helped one another. Even though we belonged to different groups, the presentation had brought us back into each other's lives. It was funny how something as ordinary as a school assignment could change things so much. If our teacher had never organized that presentation, who knows when we would have spoken again? Maybe we would have remained strangers. Maybe we would have continued walking past each other without saying a word. But somehow, we had been given another opportunity. And I wasn't taking it for granted. I was happy again. She was happy too. We were talking more frequently, and there was a comfortable feeling between us that I had missed. There were even moments when our conversations felt a little more playful. A little more personal. A little more like flirting. But I still kept my real intentions to myself. I hadn't told her what I truly felt. I hadn't told her that I had liked her from the first day I saw her. I hadn't told her that even when we became strangers, I hadn't completely forgotten about her. I hadn't told her that I still wanted to know where our friendship could lead. I kept all of that inside. I wanted to take my time. I didn't want to rush anything. For now, I was simply grateful that she was talking to me again. Then presentation day finally arrived. Everyone was prepared. There was excitement, nervousness, and the pressure to perform well. We had spent enough time preparing, so when it was finally our turn, I was ready. I gave the presentation. We did our best. And when it was over, I felt relieved. All the preparation had finally paid off. Then she came to me. "Congratulations." I smiled. It was only one word, but hearing it from her felt different. This was the same girl who had once been a stranger to me. The same girl I had first seen walk into my classroom in SS1. The same girl I had once believed I might never speak to again. And now she was standing there congratulating me. I couldn't help but feel happy. After that, we continued talking. The friendship kept growing. We played around. We laughed. We teased each other. We flirted from time to time. And once again, I found myself enjoying her presence. It felt like I had been given something back that I didn't realize I had lost. But there was still a secret between us. She knew I was her friend. She knew we enjoyed talking to each other. She knew we had become close again. But she didn't know what was really in my heart. She didn't know that my feelings had started long before that presentation. She didn't know that the first time I saw her, something inside me had changed. She didn't know that I had wanted to date her from the very beginning. And I wasn't ready to tell her yet. So I kept talking to her. I kept laughing with her. I kept enjoying every moment. I didn't know what would happen next. I didn't know whether she felt the same way. I didn't know whether our friendship would eventually become something more. But for the first time since we had become strangers, I had hope again. Maybe our story wasn't over. Maybe it had only been waiting for another opportunity to begin. And as I watched our friendship grow again, I began to wonder one question: What would happen if I finally told her how I really felt?
