Chapter Four
When the second term finally came to an end, we went on vacation.
School was over for the moment, and everyone returned to their different routines. For me, the holiday was supposed to be a time to relax, enjoy myself, and continue talking with her.
Even though we were no longer seeing each other physically every day, we still had a way of staying connected.
Facebook became our meeting place.
We continued chatting there during the vacation. We talked, joked, and kept in touch the way we normally did. Even though distance separated us physically, I did not feel like she was far away.
At least, not at first.
Then one day, during one of our conversations, she told me something I wasn't expecting.
She said she thought she needed some distance.
She wanted some space.
I remember wondering why.
“Why?” I asked her.
But she didn't really give me an explanation.
She simply told me that her reasons were personal.
There was no long explanation. No detailed story. Just that she needed some time and some distance for personal reasons.
I could have argued.
I could have demanded an explanation.
I could have kept asking questions until she told me everything.
But I decided not to.
“Okay, no problem,” I told her.
If she needed space, I was going to respect her decision.
So I stepped back.
I stopped initiating conversations with her the way I used to. I gave her the distance she had asked for.
At first, I thought it would only last for a short time.
Maybe she just needed a few days.
Maybe she would feel better afterward.
But as the days passed, the distance began to feel real.
We were technically still together, but sometimes it almost felt as though we weren't dating anymore.
The conversations became less frequent.
The connection we had built seemed quieter.
And there was nothing I could do about it because I had made a decision to respect what she had asked for.
If she wanted space, I would give her space.
I didn't want her to feel pressured by me.
So I carried on with my own life.
And while I was doing that, something unexpected happened.
During that period, I became very close to one of my female classmates.
She was someone I had already known from school, but our friendship grew much stronger during this time. We became best friends.
We talked regularly.
We spent time together.
We joked.
We shared different things about ourselves.
Her friendship gave me something else to focus on while I was dealing with the absence of my girlfriend.
Little by little, I stopped being as bored by the distance.
I stopped constantly thinking about the fact that she wasn't talking to me.
Life continued.
But while I was slowly adjusting to the distance, I began noticing something else.
She didn't seem comfortable with the distance anymore.
At first, I wasn't sure.
Then the signs became clearer.
She started sending her friends to me.
They would come and ask me questions.
“Why aren't you talking to her anymore?”
Whenever they asked, my answer was simple.
“She was the one who said she wanted distance.”
I wasn't trying to be rude.
I wasn't trying to punish her.
I was simply reminding them of what had happened.
She had asked for space, and I had respected her request.
If she no longer wanted that distance, I felt that she should tell me herself.
Still, the situation continued.
Her friends kept coming around.
They would ask why I wasn't talking to her like before.
I kept giving them the same explanation.
Eventually, I realized that I couldn't keep going like that forever.
There was no point in two people who were supposed to be together acting like complete strangers when they could simply talk things out.
So one day, I decided to approach her myself.
She was sitting alone after school had closed for the day.
The place was quieter than usual.
I walked over to her and sat down close to her.
For a moment, neither of us said much.
Then I greeted her.
“Hey, what's up?”
She responded with a simple “Hi.”
There was still a little awkwardness between us.
After everything that had happened, I didn't know exactly how she would respond to the conversation.
So I went straight to the question.
“Do you still want to keep your distance?”
She said no.
That answer caught my attention.
I asked about the reasons she had given me before.
“Are your reasons still private?”
She told me that her reasons should remain private.
I understood.
I wasn't going to force her to explain something she wasn't ready to explain.
So I simply accepted it.
“You don't want to keep your distance anymore, so I guess you're done needing space, right?” I asked.
She confirmed that she didn't want the distance anymore.
I smiled.
“Okay, it's fine.”
Then I told her something that was important to me.
I told her that I understood why she had asked for the distance, or at least that I had an idea why, but I wasn't going to bother her about it.
Whatever her personal reasons were, they belonged to her.
I didn't need to force her to reveal them.
And just like that, we started talking again.
The distance slowly disappeared.
We began communicating more naturally.
We joked again.
We talked about different things.
We had fun again.
It wasn't perfect, but at least we weren't living in that strange silence anymore.
However, there was another issue that began bothering me.
She had a male friend.
She had told me about him before, and I noticed the way he interacted with her.
There were certain things he did that I didn't like.
To me, it felt like he was getting too close and crossing boundaries that he should have understood.
I didn't hide how I felt about it.
I told her that I didn't like the way he was behaving around her.
I explained that I felt he was crossing his boundaries and that he should know where to draw the line.
She listened to me.
She told me it was fine and that she would do something about it.
That conversation didn't suddenly solve everything.
Our relationship wasn't always smooth.
There were moments when things felt complicated.
There were times when I wondered where we were heading.
But there were also good moments.
We still had fun together.
We still laughed.
We still talked.
We still found ways to enjoy each other's company.
And somehow, despite the difficulties, we kept going.
Day after day.
Conversation after conversation.
Moment after moment.
Our relationship continued.
It wasn't the perfect relationship I might have imagined when I first asked her out.
There were misunderstandings.
There was the period of distance.
There were other people whose presence sometimes made things uncomfortable.
But there was also something that kept bringing us back to each other.
We continued.
And continued.
And continued.
Before long, the vacation ended and another stage of our lives was approaching.
We were moving forward in school too.
What had started back in SS1 as a simple attraction had grown into something neither of us could have predicted.
I remembered the first Wednesday when I had seen her walk into the classroom.
Back then, she had been a stranger.
I knew almost nothing about her.
I didn't know what she liked.
I didn't know how she thought.
I didn't know the fears she had about relationships.
I didn't know that one day she would ask me for space.
I didn't know that we would become best friends, drift apart, find our way back to each other, and eventually become a couple.
Yet here we were.
Still together.
Still learning about each other.
Still figuring things out.
Eventually, we entered SS3.
It was another important stage.
Everything suddenly felt more serious.
We were no longer the same students we had been when we first met. We had grown, changed, and experienced things together.
And even though our relationship had gone through its difficult moments, we were still holding on.
Then another holiday came.
I went away for the holiday.
Once again, distance became part of our story.
But this time, things were different.
We had already experienced what it felt like to be apart.
We had already experienced what it felt like when one person needed space.
We had already learned that being together didn't mean everything would always be easy.
There would be moments when we understood each other perfectly.
There would also be moments when we didn't.
But our story was still moving forward.
From that first Wednesday to the friendship that followed, from the misunderstandings to the relationship, from the distance to finding our way back to each other, every experience had added another page to our story.
And as I went on that holiday during SS3, I had no idea what the next chapter was going to bring.
I only knew that our story wasn't over yet.
