Chapter 9: The Tether Between Us
The kiss lingered between them like the last note of a sacred hymn—gentle, but awakening something ancient. Theron's breath was warm against Ava's lips, his forehead resting against hers as if grounding them both from the surge of feeling.
She hadn’t meant to fall this fast.
He hadn’t planned to care this much.
But the pull was undeniable.
“I should go,” Ava whispered.
“I won’t stop you,” Theron murmured, his voice husky, but his hand still held her waist with the kind of restraint that hinted at how badly he didn’t want to let go.
But Ava didn’t move. She stayed rooted in the moment, in the way her skin tingled under his touch, in the safety that bloomed in her chest every time she looked at him.
“I don’t want to,” she admitted, the words falling like confession.
The air shifted.
In one motion, Theron closed the space between them again, this time deeper—his lips pressing into hers with intensity, his body wrapping around hers like a storm held barely in check. His hands, large and rough from battles, moved gently down her arms, tracing the shape of her shoulders, her waist, the curve of her back.
Ava gasped softly as he backed her against the wall, his body a furnace against her cold skin.
“Tell me to stop,” he said, voice thick with restraint, forehead pressed against her temple. “And I will.”
She didn’t.
Instead, she tugged him closer, threading her fingers through his dark hair and pulling his mouth back to hers.
Their lips collided with more need this time—no hesitation, just heat and hunger. His tongue slid over hers, and her knees buckled slightly under the sensation. He caught her with a growl, lifting her effortlessly and carrying her toward the bed as if she weighed nothing.
She wrapped her legs around his waist, her breath ragged, her heart thundering against his.
When her back hit the bed, she looked up at him—her Lycan King, eyes wild and reverent, like she was the most precious thing he’d ever seen.
“Ava,” he said, her name a low prayer on his tongue, “Are you sure?”
She nodded, brushing her fingers over his lips. “I trust you.”
That was all he needed.
The layers between them vanished—clothes, doubts, fear—until it was just skin on skin, heat on heat. Theron kissed her like he had waited lifetimes to find her, every touch reverent but burning with primal need.
Ava gasped his name as he explored her, his lips trailing fire along her collarbone, his hands mapping the terrain of her body like sacred ground. Her back arched, and he groaned against her skin.
They moved together in a rhythm only fated mates could know—wild yet tender, urgent yet eternal. His lips found hers again and again, anchoring her through the waves of pleasure, through the storm of emotion.
When they both finally stilled, hearts pounding in unison, tangled in the sheets and each other, Ava pressed her head to his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart.
“You’re mine,” he whispered, voice hoarse. “And I am yours.”
She closed her eyes, letting those words settle deep in her soul.
And for the first time in years, she believed them.
