Chapter Five: Lily's Secret
---
The clock on Alex's office wall at Red Rubbies LTD ticked past 11:45 PM.
The building was silent, the hum of the air conditioning the only sound. The security lights cast long shadows across the empty corridors, and the city beyond the windows glittered like a field of distant stars.
Alex sat at his desk, the note in his hand, his heart pounding.
"Meet me in the conference room at midnight. Come alone. I have something to show you. — Your Secret Admirer."
He had told no one about the note. Not Jany, not his assistant, not anyone. He knew it was risky, possibly even foolish, but he couldn't ignore it. He had to know who was behind the gifts, the notes, the messages.
He pushed his chair back, stood, and walked toward the conference room.
---
The conference room was on the 27th floor of Red Rubbies LTD, at the end of the hall.
It was a large, glass-walled room with a long table, leather chairs, and a view of the city that took your breath away. The lights were off, but the moon cast a silver glow through the windows, illuminating the room in soft, ethereal light.
Alex pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The room was empty.
He frowned, his eyes scanning the darkness. "Hello?"
No answer.
He was about to leave when a voice spoke from the shadows.
"Alex."
He turned, his heart lurching.
Lily stepped out of the corner, her figure silhouetted against the moonlit window. She was wearing a simple white dress, her strawberry blonde hair loose around her shoulders. She looked ethereal, almost otherworldly.
"Lily?" he said, his voice filled with surprise. "You're the secret admirer?"
She smiled, a soft, gentle smile. "I am."
He stared at her, his mind racing. Lily had always been quiet, unassuming, the sweet girl who never caused any trouble. He had never imagined she would be capable of something like this.
"I don't understand," he said. "Why?"
She stepped closer, her eyes fixed on his. "Because I've loved you since the day I started working at Red Rubbies LTD. From the moment I saw you, I knew you were different. You're kind, you're genuine, you're nothing like the other men in this building."
He swallowed, his throat tight. "Lily, I —"
"Don't say anything yet," she said, raising a hand. "Just let me say this. I know there are other women who want you. Nancy, Smillee, even Jany. But none of them love you the way I do. None of them see you the way I do."
She reached out, her fingers brushing his cheek. "I know you have feelings for the cleaner. Trisha. I've seen the way you look at her."
His eyes widened. "How did you —"
"I see everything," she said, her voice soft but firm. "I watch, Alex. I listen. I know what goes on in this building. And I know that your heart is pulling you toward someone who isn't me."
He looked at her, his emotions in turmoil. "Then why are you telling me this?"
"Because I want you to know that I'm still here," she said. "I'm still fighting for you. And I won't give up, no matter what."
She leaned in, her lips brushing his cheek.
"I love you, Alex," she whispered. "And one day, you'll love me too."
Then she turned and walked out of the room, leaving him alone in the moonlight.
---
The next morning at Red Rubbies LTD, Alex couldn't focus.
Lily's confession echoed in his mind, competing with thoughts of Jany's boldness, Nancy's aggression, and Smillee's persistence. And through it all, Trisha's gentle smile lingered in his heart.
He was in over his head. And he didn't know what to do.
---
In the break room at Red Rubbies LTD, Smillee was fuming.
"I heard you had a midnight meeting with Alex," she said, her voice sharp. "What was that all about?"
Lily smiled sweetly. "It's none of your business, Smillee."
"Everything is my business when it comes to Alex," Smillee snapped. "I've been pursuing him for months, and I won't let some innocent act steal him away."
"Innocent?" Lily laughed, a bright, bell-like sound. "You think I'm innocent? That's adorable."
Smillee glared at her. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means," Lily said, her voice dropping, "that you're not the only one who knows how to play games. I've been playing them a lot longer than you, Smillee. And I'm a lot better at it."
She walked away, leaving Smillee seething.
---
Nancy, who had been watching from the corner, approached Smillee with a knowing smile.
"Looks like we have a new competitor," Nancy said.
"Lily's not a competitor," Smillee said. "She's a threat."
"Then we'll have to deal with her, won't we?"
Smillee looked at her, her eyes narrowing. "What do you mean?"
Nancy smiled, a cold, predatory smile. "I mean, we should work together. For now."
Smillee hesitated, then nodded slowly. "I'm listening."
---
On the 14th floor of Red Rubbies LTD, Trisha was cleaning the executive washroom when her phone buzzed.
It was another message from the unknown number.
Unknown: You're not the only one who wants him. Stay away, or you'll regret it.
She stared at the screen, her hands trembling. Who was sending these messages? And what did they want?
She had never asked for any of this. She had never wanted to be part of a competition. She had only wanted to do her job and survive.
But now, she was caught in the middle of something much bigger than herself.
She tucked her phone back into her pocket and resumed her work, her heart heavy.
She didn't know who was behind the messages, but she was determined to find out.
---
Later that evening at Red Rubbies LTD, Alex found another note on his desk.
This one was written in elegant script, on expensive stationery:
"Dear Alex,
I've been watching you for a long time. You're the most beautiful man I've ever seen, and I can't stop thinking about you. I know you have other admirers, but I want you to know that no one will love you the way I do. I will prove it to you. Just wait and see.
Yours always,
A Secret Admirer."
He read it three times, his heart pounding.
Whoever this was, they were determined, passionate, and clearly not afraid to take risks.
And Alex, despite his better judgment, was intrigued.
---
That night, as the city glittered beyond his window, Alex lay awake in bed, the note on his nightstand.
He thought about the women in his life — Jany, Nancy, Lily, Smillee, and Trisha.
They all wanted him. They all had their reasons.
But only one of them made his heart beat faster.
And he knew, with sudden certainty, that he had to find out who it was.
