36 NoraPressing the desk-phone receiver to her ear, Nora eagerly waited for her caller to come on the line. She sat at a cluttered metal desk in her upstairs office at the two-story Legal Resource Center building. She’d dressed for a no-court Tuesday in faded Wranglers and a bright blue long-sleeved T-shirt. Spokane was in the grip of icy temperatures and gloomy clouds filled the January sky beyond her window. She’d been huddled at the desk all morning, frustrated by a game of phone tag with contacts who were supposed to give her the new information she needed to move forward on her sister’s case.
