The warm sunlight of Sunday afternoon poured into Emily’s dorm room as she sat at her desk, going through her notes. Despite the glow of Lucas’s words from the previous day lingering in her mind, a part of her felt unsettled. Linda’s presence during the competition had been an unwelcome reminder that she wasn’t the only one drawn to Lucas.
Her phone buzzed, breaking her thoughts. It was Kara.
"Hey," Kara said, her voice bright. "Wanna grab coffee? I need to tell you about this ridiculous thing Linda said after the competition yesterday."
Curiosity piqued, Emily agreed. Twenty minutes later, they met at a nearby café. Kara wasted no time.
"So, apparently, Linda’s been going around saying she and Lucas are basically destined for each other. Can you believe that?" Kara rolled her eyes, stirring her latte.
Emily blinked. "Destined? That’s... ambitious." She tried to keep her tone light, though her chest tightened slightly.
"Right?" Kara leaned in conspiratorially. "And Isabelle’s hyping her up, saying Lucas must have just been too focused on the competition to notice her. Honestly, Emily, you might want to make your move soon."
Emily laughed nervously, brushing off the comment. "It’s not like that. We’re just friends."
"Mhm," Kara said skeptically. "Sure. Friends. Anyway, just thought you’d want to know what the competition’s up to."
They spent the rest of their coffee break chatting about classes and weekend plans, but Kara’s words stayed with Emily. Later that evening, she found herself staring at her reflection, wondering if she was too naive to see what was happening around her. The system chimed softly in her mind:
"Host is encouraged to strengthen connections and stay aware of external challenges."
Taking a deep breath, Emily resolved to handle things her way.
