Emily arrived at the classroom early, her gaze sweeping over the room until it landed on a familiar figure—Lucas. He was seated in the front row, completely engrossed in the notebook before him, as if the rest of the world didn’t exist. The sunlight streaming through the window fell softly on his brown hair, giving him a gentle halo-like glow.
She took a deep breath, nervously clutching the book in her hands. The system had made it clear she needed to complete her task, but actually walking up to Lucas felt far more daunting in reality.
As she stood there hesitating, Kara appeared behind her and gave her a playful tap on the shoulder, pulling her out of her thoughts.
“Emily, why are you just standing here?” Kara asked, tilting her head. “You look like you’re staring at someone.”
“I’m not!” Emily quickly denied, lowering her head in embarrassment.
Kara’s mischievous grin widened, and she gestured toward Lucas. “Oh, were you checking out Lucas? He’s kind of the star of our finance program, you know.”
“I wasn’t!” Emily protested, her cheeks heating up.
“Sure you weren’t,” Kara teased, looping her arm through Emily’s. “Come on, let’s grab some seats.”
Kara led her into the classroom, and the two found seats near the middle, next to the window.
A Classroom Icebreaker
The professor arrived on time and began the lecture. Emily tried to focus, but her eyes kept straying toward Lucas. His notes were impeccably organized, and he occasionally raised his hand to answer questions. Every time he spoke, his insights seemed to command attention.
“He’s really impressive,” Emily thought to herself.
Midway through the lecture, the professor introduced an activity. “For the next segment, we’ll have a group discussion. Form groups of three to four, analyze the assigned case study, and submit a summary by the end of class.”
The room buzzed with activity as students began forming groups. Kara immediately turned to Emily. “Let’s team up!”
Emily nodded, but before she could respond, a warm voice from the front row called out, “Emily, want to join our group?”
She looked up to see Lucas smiling at her, his expression inviting.
“Oh, sure!” she replied, her voice almost automatic.
Kara gave her a knowing smirk. “Well, I’ll find another group then. Good luck, Emily!”
Teamwork and Chemistry
Emily joined Lucas’s group, which also included James, a perpetually grinning joker.
“Welcome to our elite squad!” James quipped, extending his hand with exaggerated formality.
“Thanks,” Emily said with a small laugh, her earlier nervousness easing slightly.
Their task was to design a new marketing strategy for a fictional company. Lucas quickly took charge, grabbing a marker and jotting key points on the whiteboard.
“We can analyze this from three angles: consumer behavior, cost optimization, and market expansion,” he explained, his tone calm yet authoritative.
“I think starting with consumer behavior makes the most sense,” James chimed in. “We could focus on understanding the needs of potential customers.”
Emily took a deep breath and hesitantly added, “Maybe we could narrow it down to younger consumers. They seem to prefer eco-friendly products.”
Lucas turned to her, his eyes lighting up with interest. “That’s a great angle. Sustainability is definitely trending. Can you elaborate on that?”
Encouraged by his response, Emily relaxed and began explaining her idea in more detail. As the discussion progressed, she noticed that Lucas not only had sharp analytical skills but also an ability to make everyone feel valued. He listened attentively to every suggestion and offered thoughtful feedback, creating a collaborative and supportive atmosphere.
An Unexpected Compliment
After the discussion, the professor asked each group to submit a brief summary of their ideas. Emily volunteered to compile their points and handed the finished draft to Lucas.
“You’re really good at summarizing,” Lucas said, accepting the paper. “I think our proposal might be one of the best in the class.”
“Thanks, but it’s really just everyone’s ideas put together,” Emily replied modestly.
“Don’t be so humble,” James interjected. “I’ve never seen Lucas give such genuine compliments before!”
“James!” Lucas said, laughing as he playfully shoved James’s shoulder. “Don’t exaggerate.”
The group left the classroom together, and as they were about to part ways, Lucas turned to Emily. “Next time we have a project like this, let’s team up again.”
Emily blinked in surprise before nodding. “Sure, I’d like that.”
As she walked away, the system’s voice chimed in her mind: “Task progress: 20%.”
An Invitation for the Weekend
Back at her dorm, Emily sat down to organize her notes. Her phone buzzed, and she saw a message from Kara.
“Hey, there’s a coffee shop hangout this weekend, and guess what? Lucas will be there ;) Wanna come?”
Emily hesitated, staring at the screen for a moment. The system’s task loomed in her mind. Letting out a resigned sigh, she typed back, “Count me in.”
On Saturday evening, the coffee shop was warm and inviting, with soft lights and the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. Kara led Emily into the gathering, immediately blending into a group of familiar faces.
Emily lingered by herself, unsure how to join the lively conversations, until a familiar voice caught her attention.
“Emily, you made it.”
She turned to see Lucas approaching, holding a cup of coffee. He looked relaxed, his smile as warm as ever.
“Yeah, Kara said this would be fun, so I thought I’d check it out,” Emily replied.
“This place is great,” Lucas said, handing her his cup. “You should try their pour-over coffee—it’s amazing.”
“Sure.” Emily took a tentative sip, savoring the smooth, rich flavor.
They ended up chatting in a quiet corner, moving from their classroom discussion to lighthearted campus stories. Lucas seemed genuinely interested in her thoughts, and Emily realized he wasn’t as unattainable as she had imagined. His warm demeanor and attentive listening put her at ease.
By the end of the evening, as the gathering wound down, Lucas smiled and said, “Let’s grab coffee again sometime.”
As Emily left the coffee shop, the system’s voice chimed again: “Task progress: 40%.”
The cool night air brushed against her cheeks, and she couldn’t help but smile. Maybe, just maybe, this task wasn’t as impossible as she’d thought.
