The week following the hike passed by in a blur for Emily. She threw herself into her coursework, attending lectures, tackling projects, and preparing for upcoming midterms. Yet, amidst the busyness, Lucas’s words from their hike lingered in her mind. His honesty had left a mark on her, a reminder that even those who seemed flawless had their own vulnerabilities.
That Friday evening, Kara invited Emily to join her and a few others for a casual night out at the university’s planetarium. The event was organized by the Astronomy Club, offering a stargazing experience paired with lectures on constellations. Reluctantly, Emily agreed. She needed a break.
When she arrived, she spotted Kara waving enthusiastically. Beside her stood James, a self-proclaimed comedian in their class, and Vivian, a quiet but fiercely intelligent economics major. The small group welcomed Emily warmly, and they headed inside.
The room was dimly lit, the ceiling glowing with projections of the night sky. Soft ambient music played in the background, creating an almost magical atmosphere. As the lecture began, the host guided the audience through constellations, weaving mythological tales into the scientific explanations.
“Hey,” Kara whispered, nudging Emily. “Did you notice who’s sitting three rows ahead?”
Emily squinted in the dim light and saw Lucas, sitting next to Linda and Isabelle. Linda was leaning toward him, whispering something that made Isabelle giggle.
Kara smirked. "Looks like she’s still at it."
Emily shrugged, trying to appear indifferent. "She can do what she wants."
But as the lecture continued, Emily couldn’t help but steal glances at Lucas. To her surprise, his attention wasn’t on Linda or Isabelle but on the star-filled ceiling. His expression was serene, almost introspective.
During the intermission, Kara and James dragged Emily outside to the rooftop, where telescopes were set up. The night sky stretched above them, crystal clear and breathtakingly vast.
“Emily, over here!” Kara called, waving her over to a telescope.
Emily peered through the lens, marveling at the bright cluster of stars. "It’s beautiful," she murmured.
“It’s even better with a guide,” a familiar voice said. Emily turned to find Lucas standing behind her, a small smile on his face.
“Didn’t expect to see you here,” she said, stepping aside so he could take a turn at the telescope.
Lucas chuckled. “I needed a break. Plus, there’s something calming about the stars.”
Kara, sensing an opportunity, quickly grabbed James and Vivian. “We’ll check out the other telescopes. See you later!” she called, leaving Emily and Lucas alone.
“Subtle,” Lucas remarked, shaking his head.
Emily laughed. “That’s Kara for you.”
They took turns at the telescope, sharing quiet observations about the constellations. Lucas shared a story about stargazing trips he used to take with his dad, and Emily spoke about her childhood fascination with space, fueled by late-night documentaries.
As the night wore on, Lucas turned to Emily. “You know, I’m glad you came tonight.”
“Why’s that?” she asked, looking up at him.
“Because I feel like I can be myself around you,” he said simply.
Emily’s heart skipped a beat. “I think you underestimate yourself, Lucas. You don’t have to perform for anyone.”
Lucas smiled, but before he could respond, the Astronomy Club announced the end of the event. They walked back together, the cool night air wrapping around them.
As they parted ways, the system chimed in Emily’s mind:
"Current favorability level: 99%. Host is on the brink of success."
Emily smiled to herself. One step closer.
